No arguments on charges yet in extortion case against Vikash Yadav, supplementary chargesheet soon
'The judge has ordered that the investigating team files the supplementary chargesheet by 25 August. Arguments on charges cannot commence until then,' a source privy to the matter said.
Arguments on charges were supposed to commence in the matter in this month's hearing at Delhi's Patiala House court. However, according to sources, the investigating team said that the probe is still underway, and the judge asked the investigating officer to file the supplementary chargesheet on or before the date of next hearing—25 August.
New Delhi: A supplementary chargesheet will be filed in the 2023 kidnapping and attempted murder case against former Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) officer Vikash Yadav, the investigating officer told the court during the latest hearing on 22 May, ThePrint has learnt.
Yadav has not been appearing for the case hearings, citing threat to his life through exemption pleas filed by his counsels. He has claimed that the charges against him are false and frivolous, and since the particulars of his life are in public domain along with his photographs, it has exposed a 'serious threat' to his life.
The former R&AW officer is also an accused in the alleged murder-for-hire plot against Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. While Nikhil Gupta, co-accused in this case, continues to remain behind bars in a Brooklyn prison, Yadav is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The one in India against Yadav pertains to a Special Cell case against him and one Abdullah Khan on charges of extortion, kidnapping and attempt to murder. Yadav was arrested in the matter in December 2023 after the complainant alleged that he and Khan abducted and tortured him, and demanded ransom in the name of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
The first chargesheet filed in the matter, as ThePrint reported in October last year, relied heavily on the former R&AW officer's disclosure.

Police monitor weddings in Jalore to curb opium serving tradition
Jaipur: Police in Jalore are keeping a close watch on weddings and social gatherings this season as part of an intensified crackdown on 'manuhar'—a deeply rooted tradition in western Rajasthan in which opium is ceremonially served to guests at functions such as weddings, funerals, and festivals. SP (Jalore) Gyan Chand Yadav said that three FIRs were registered and 15 individuals booked so far this year for either organising or attempting to serve opium at public events. The ritual, considered almost obligatory in districts like Jalore, often compelled families to spend up to Rs 3 lakh to uphold the custom, driven by community expectations. But with enforcement stepped up this wedding season, police say violations are being proactively identified and prevented. "We've received direct complaints from individuals saying they were being forced by relatives to serve opium at family events," Yadav told TOI. "In one case, a man told us his brother insisted on following the tradition. Another person reported similar pressure from within the family. These accounts reflect the grip of the practice—and a growing willingness to challenge it." Apart from lodging cases, the police have begun preventive actions, including issuing warnings and binding down suspects. Awareness drives have also been launched to inform the public about the health risks and legal consequences of narcotics use under the NDPS Act. Police are also tracking disguised attempts to bypass the crackdown. In some instances, opium-laced tea was reportedly served from kettles, prompting sharp public reaction after video clips went viral. In response, plainclothes officers have been deployed at high-footfall functions, and the local informer network has been strengthened to flag suspicious activity. The police say the operation will remain active through the festive and marriage season, with strict monitoring of known distributors and close surveillance of venues hosting large gatherings. "We are not targeting tradition—we are acting against drug abuse," said an officer. "Serving opium is illegal, regardless of how long it was practised. That message is being delivered clearly."

Tejashwi Yadav slams Nitish Kumar over Muzaffarpur minor girl's rape
Patna: Bihar Leader of the Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his government on Monday over the Muzaffarpur rape case and medical negligence at PMCH that led to the death of a 10-year-old Dalit girl. Speaking to the media, Yadav said, 'Whether it's law and order, healthcare, education, or employment, this double-engine government has failed completely. The Chief Minister has never expressed regret on any such issue. I doubt if he even knows about this brutal rape case.' Yadav strongly criticised the Chief Minister and his two deputies for allegedly being preoccupied with political events and election preparations, saying they were ignoring public grievances and justice. 'Criminals are dominant in Bihar. Bullets are being fired near the Secretariat and even outside the Chief Minister's residence. There is no law and order left in Bihar,' Yadav added, pointing to recent violent crimes across the state. On the victim's death, Yadav claimed the child was left in an ambulance for over four hours without treatment at PMCH, which he described as an inexcusable administrative failure. 'No one from the government met the victim's family. This shows the insensitivity of the ruling alliance,' he said. When asked about his brother Tej Pratap Yadav's controversy and comments involving the term 'Jaichand,' Tejashwi said the matter has been handled by RJD national president Lalu Prasad Yadav, and he would not comment on personal issues. On Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's statement criticising the NDA's focus on optics over substance, Yadav said, 'He has only spoken the truth. Airports are being inaugurated, PM Modi did the road show, but martyr families are being ignored. Crimes against children are happening, yet no one in the government speaks out about it.'

Land for Jobs case: CBI commences arguments on charges in land for job case against Lalu Prasad, others
New Delhi [India], June 2 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday began its arguments on charges in the land for job scam case, in which former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family members, former public servants, and candidates are accused. Yadav is alleged to have granted railway jobs in exchange for land parcels from candidates or their relatives, either as gifts or at significantly reduced prices. Special judge Vishal Gogne heard the submissions by senior advocate DP Singh alongwith advocate Manu Mishra, who appeared for the CBI. CBI's counsel gave a brief overview of the case and submitted that there is a sanction to prosecute Lalu Prasad Yadav and public servants in this case. It was further submitted that there is sufficient material evidence to frame charges against the accused persons for the offence they are chargesheeted. Delhi High Court has already rejected the plea of Lalu Prasad Yadav seeking a stay on trial court proceedings. The Delhi High Court on May 31 dismissed a plea by RJD chief and former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav. Justice Ravinder Dudeja had ruled that Yadav remains free to present his arguments before the trial court at the charge consideration stage, stating there were no compelling reasons to halt proceedings. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal had sought to quash the FIR, arguing that the CBI failed to obtain mandatory prior approval before proceeding with its inquiry. He contended that while approval was secured for others, it was not obtained in his case. The CBI, opposing the petition on maintainability grounds, had argued that a sanction under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act was not required. It further stated that while a sanction under Section 19 was necessary, it had already been obtained. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have investigated former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, his family, and several others in connection with the land-for-jobs case.
