Tamkeen and the Supreme Council of Health announce the launch of a support bundle for the healthcare sector targeting 750 Bahraini healthcare professionals

Biz Bahrain03-07-2025
Following the directives of His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Minister of the Prime Minister's Court and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Labour Fund (Tamkeen), 'Tamkeen' announced the launch of a new healthcare support bundle targeting 750 Bahraini healthcare professionals. This initiative aligns with the Kingdom of Bahrain's government directives to support local medical professionals, thus enhancing their employment and career development prospects. It also follows the success of the previous healthcare support bundle launched last year, which benefited more than 700 Bahrainis in collaboration with the Supreme Council of Health. The support bundle comprises seven key initiatives. The first two focus on supporting Bahraini doctors in obtaining board certification in various medical specialties. The third initiative supports Bahraini doctors in joining medical fellowship programs to help them specialize in in-demand fields, preparing them to become medical consultants. Additionally, two initiatives are dedicated to supporting Bahraini nurses. One aims to develop national talent in the nursing field by sponsoring high school graduates to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing degree. The other focuses on helping Bahraini nurses obtain specialized qualifications in fields such as midwifery, critical care, cardiovascular care, nephrology, and emergency care. To broaden the scope of beneficiaries of this bundle, two new initiatives have been introduced for the first time—one to support dentists and another to support allied health professionals. On this occasion, Her Excellency Ms. Maha Abdulhameed Mofeez, Chief Executive of the Labour Fund 'Tamkeen', stated: 'This second healthcare initiative builds on the positive impact of the first bundle launched last year, reflecting the vital role this sector plays in supporting the national economy. The healthcare sector is one of the most promising in the Kingdom, employing over 22,000 professionals across various roles and specialties. We remain committed to empowering national talent across all economic sectors by providing employment and career development opportunities to ensure they remain the first choice of employment in the labour market.' In addition, His Excellency Dr. Ibrahim Ali Al-Nawakhatha, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Health commended Tamkeen's role in supporting the healthcare sector, stating: 'This new and updated healthcare support bundle accommodates labor market demand for qualified national healthcare professionals. This year's initiatives, which include support for dentists and allied health professionals, will significantly enhance employment opportunities and career development prospects for Bahrainis in these disciplines. We extend our sincere gratitude to all partners, led by Tamkeen, for their continuous support of initiatives aimed at integrating and developing national talent in the healthcare sector.' Applications for fellowship, residency (board certification), dentistry, and allied health programs can be submitted through the Supreme Council of Health's website at www.sch.org.bh. Opportunities related to the Bachelor of Nursing program will be included in the scholarship plan to be announced by the Ministry of Education. Meanwhile, the opening of applications for nursing specialties at the University of Bahrain will be announced at a later stage.
Tamkeen's support for the healthcare sector is in line with its 2025 strategic priorities, which focus on enhancing the position and competitiveness of Bahrainis in the private sector, equipping Bahrainis with suitable skills for career development in the private sector, and prioritizing enterprise growth, digitization, and sustainability, and supporting the development of the ecosystem surrounding the labor market and private sector.

Bahrain to Launch Tender for Mandatory Health Insurance Program for Residents

Bahrain is taking another step toward providing comprehensive healthcare for all residents. The Tender Board is preparing to launch a new tender to select an insurance company to manage and implement the mandatory health package for residents, known as the 'Hakeem Program.' The winning insurance company will be responsible for offering quality health coverage and managing the benefits included in the five-year mandatory health plan. The tender is scheduled to be opened on August 4, with the Supreme Council of Health overseeing the selection process. According to earlier statements from the Supreme Council of Health, the program is expected to start before the end of 2025. The 'Hakeem Program' aims to ensure that all residents have access to high-quality primary, secondary, and emergency healthcare services. It also encourages private sector participation, promotes efficient use of resources, and secures the financial sustainability of Bahrain's health system. Additionally, the initiative will support healthcare providers in obtaining local and international accreditations, while strengthening governance and licensing frameworks to maintain high service standards.

Workplaces Ordered to Station First-Aid Trained Staff

TDT | Manama First-aid trained staff must now be present at every Bahraini workplace under new Health Ministry rules aimed at preventing injuries from becoming fatal. The decision, published in the latest edition of the Official Gazette, lays out new requirements for employers across the private sector. Each site must be ready to deal with medical emergencies, and help must be called at once if someone is badly hurt or suddenly falls ill at work. Names One trained person is needed for every 20 workers, and their names must be kept in a log on site. They must hold a recognised certificate showing they've completed at least one course in first aid. Supplies Another employee must be named to check supplies and deal with inspectors when needed. First-Aid Kits Workplaces must keep first-aid boxes stocked with items listed in a table attached to the ministerial order. These kits must be easy to find and checked regularly to ensure everything is usable. One box is needed for every 100 workers or fewer. Emergencies Employers must also put together a plan for emergencies. This should include ambulance contacts, maps showing the nearest clinic, and a layout of exits. The order forms part of Ministerial Decision No. 16 of 2025, signed by Health Minister Her Excellency Dr. Jaleela bint Al Sayed Jawad Hassan. It replaces a 1976 rule on what first-aid boxes should contain. Anyone breaching the new rules may face punishment under Article 192 of the 2012 Labour Law or Article 129 of the Public Health Law, depending on the offence. The decision takes effect the day after it appears in the Gazette.
