Students Warned About Rajasthan School Roof, Teacher Was Busy Eating 'Poha'
One of the students who witnessed the deadly school building collapse in Rajasthan's Jhalawar has said that she had flagged to her teacher that gravel was falling from the roof, but was "ignored".
Seven children were killed and 27 others injured when a portion of their government school building collapsed on Friday, minutes before the morning assembly. The victims were identified as Payal (12), Priyanka (12), Kundan (12), Harish (8), Kartik and a brother and sister -- Meena (12) and Kanha (6).
"When we reached school, the teacher asked us to wait in the classroom for morning prayers. Then some pieces of gravel started falling from the roof. A student immediately informed the teacher, who said, 'Nothing was falling.' The roof later collapsed. I was able to escape, but others were trapped," a student told reporters while recounting the horrifying incident.
Another student said the teacher was having 'poha', a staple breakfast snack, when the roof collapsed.
They also said they had repeatedly flagged the issue, but no action was taken.

Jhalawar collector Ajay Singh, however, said the district administration had recently instructed the education department to give information about any dilapidated school building and said that this one did not figure in the list.
Five staffers of school have been suspended.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma held a high-level meeting after the incident and said he has told officers to ensure that no school building should be in a dilapidated condition.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the deaths.
"The news of the collapse of a school roof in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, resulting in the death and injury of several students, is extremely tragic. I pray that God grants strength to the grieving families to bear this pain," President Murmu said in a post on X in Hindi.
PM Modi called the incident "tragic" and "deeply saddening".
"My thoughts are with the affected students and their families in this difficult hour. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected," he said.

Police said the kidnap-murder drama should serve as an eye-opener and urged parents to teach their children to not blindly trust strangers and to not go with fairly familiar people without informing parents. In extreme cases of kidnap and parents getting ransom calls, a police officer requested parents to not panic and immediately inform the jurisdictional police station about such calls so that officers can act without losing time and save lives from a likely tragedy.

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis appeals for peace after communal tension erupts over objectionable post
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperation after communal tensions flared up in Pune district due to an objectionable social media post shared by an outsider. "We have only one appeal: everyone should maintain peace and no one should take the law into their own hands," Fadnavis said.(ANI) The remark came after a tense situation had arisen in Yavat village at Daund Taluka of Pune District following an alleged objectionable social media post by a local youth. Villagers took to the streets and a few youngsters attempted to vandalise a structure. A heavy deployment of Police personnel was made in the area. Police said that the incident occurred in the village a week ago, so the situation was already tense. Speaking to the media persons, CM Fadnavis said, "We have only one appeal: everyone should maintain peace and no one should take the law into their own hands. Passenger slapped on Mumbai-Kolkata flight, IndiGo responds to viral video
A passenger onboard IndiGo flight 6E138 from Mumbai to Kolkata slapped a fellow traveller in the aircraft aisle on Friday, sparking outrage after a video of the incident went viral on social media. IndiGo declared the attacker as 'unruly' and stated that relevant aviation security agencies had been informed.(ANI) According to sources, the victim appeared to be unwell and was receiving assistance from the cabin crew when another passenger suddenly slapped him without any provocation. A video clip circulating online shows the victim in visible distress, crying after the slap, while another passenger can be heard asking, 'Why did you slap him? You don't have any right to hit anybody.' A crew member is also heard telling the accused, 'Don't do [that].' Attacker handed over to authorities Upon landing in Kolkata, the accused was handed over to security personnel at the airport. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) took the individual into custody for further investigation. The airline declared the individual as "unruly" and stated that relevant aviation security agencies had been informed in line with protocol. IndiGo's response IndiGo, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, 'We are aware of an incident involving a physical altercation on board one of our flights. Such unruly behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we strongly condemn any actions that compromise the safety and dignity of our passengers and crew.' The airline added, 'Our crew acted in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures. The individual involved was identified as unruly and handed over to the security authorities upon arrival. All appropriate regulatory agencies have been duly informed, in line with protocol. We remain committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment on all our flights.' Public outrage The video sparked outrage across social media, with many calling for strict action against the attacker. One user on X wrote, 'This isn't society collapsing, it's decades of hate politics finally reaching cruising altitude.' Another commented, 'What level of harassment and abuse is this? Just slapping a guy because he was a visible Muslim? What action have you taken against him? He should be behind bars and banned from travelling.' A third added, 'What right does that person have to hit anyone? Pathetic!' The reason behind the assault remains unknown as of now, and investigations are ongoing.
