Two-time world cheerleading champion Rylie Shaw stated her battles with severe exhaustion started in high school. She frequently advised her mother that she 'didn't feel good' and would unintentionally fall asleep in class. She occasionally nodded off at the wheel, which made her understand something wasn't right.
"I have to be very strategic,"
Shaw tells PEOPLE.
"I remember constantly telling my mom, I don't feel good. I would frequently doze off in my classes and had a few instances of falling asleep at the wheel, when I realized my tiredness was not normal."
Doctors diagnosed Rylie Shaw with narcolepsy following her description of her symptoms even though she had no family history of it. A chronic neurological condition called narcolepsy impairs the capacity of the brain to manage sleep-wake cycles.
