Maharashtra govt announces independent commission for scheduled tribes
The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) approved establishing a separate commission for Scheduled Tribes on the lines of a similar Central body.
This decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
A statement by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said the Centre has two separate commissions for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), which deal with different issues. Accordingly, it is necessary to have two separate commissions (in the state also).
The CMO said both commissions will function independently. The Cabinet has given in-principle approval for according Constitutional status to the two bodies.
Maharashtra had recommended the formation of an independent Commission for Tribals in the 51st Tribal Advisory Committee.
The composition of this Commission will be similar to the Maharashtra Commission for Scheduled Castes- one chairman and four non-governmental members.
Twenty-six new posts will be created for the ST Commission. The cabinet has also sanctioned Rs 4.20 crore for administrative purposes, including office and salaries of members.

Benchmarks trade with decent gains; PSU bank shares drop
The domestic equity indices continued to trade with modest gains in mid-afternoon trade, supported by positive global sentiment, expectations of a rate cut in the upcoming RBI policy meeting later this week, and sustained foreign fund inflows. Buzzing Index: The Nifty PSU Bank index fell 0.79% to 7,044.45. The index advanced in the past trading session. Bank of Baroda (down 2.23%), Canara Bank (down 0.95%), Bank of Maharashtra (down 0.94%), UCO Bank (down 0.91%), Indian Overseas Bank (down 0.87%), Bank of India (down 0.87%), Union Bank of India (down 0.84%), Indian Bank (down 0.84%), Punjab National Bank (down 0.83%) and Punjab & Sind Bank (down 0.52%) advanced. Numbers to Track: The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper fell 0.21% to 6.199 from the previous close of 6.211. In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 85.7700 compared with its close of 85.8700 during the previous trading session. MCX Gold futures for 5 August 2025 settlement shed 0.05% to Rs 98,528. The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.06% to 98.88. The United States 10-year bond yield shed 0.09% to 4.358. In the commodities market, Brent crude for August 2025 settlement rose 30 cents or 0.46% to $65.16 a barrel. Stock in Spotlight: Man Industries (India) rose 1.03% after the company announced that it had secured a new export order worth Rs 1,150 crore from an international customer for the supply of various types of pipes.

"We toured five countries in the past 15 days. On Thursday, the EAM will convene a meeting. But I will not be able to attend that. I have some pre-scheduled engagements. "All important matters" can be discussed in the session, Union minister Kiren Rijiju said, adding that every Parliament session was a "special session". "Parliamentophobia (noun) - My word for the acute condition of a (Modi) govt who have a morbid fear of facing Parliament. Running away from a special session," O'Brien said in a post on X. Speaking to reporters later, he said, "TMC studied the past announcements and usually the session is announced around 19 days ahead of the date of commencement. This time they announced it 47 days ahead. So scared!"

Sharmishtha Panoli (File photo) NEW DELHI: The Calcutta high court on Thursday granted interim bail to social media influencer and law student Sharmishtha Panoli, nearly a week after her arrest for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through an Instagram video. Panoli was arrested on May 30. The high court directed Panoli to furnish a bond worth Rs 10,000. The 22-year-old, who was taken into custody by Kolkata Police from Gurugram last Friday, had been sent to judicial custody by a local court in Kolkata till June 13. However, her legal team moved the high court seeking relief, arguing that the case was a matter of free speech and that Panoli had already removed the controversial video and issued an apology. Her counsel, Md Samimuddin, said the court directed the state to ensure Panoli receives basic amenities while in custody, noting that such provisions were currently lacking. 'The High Court has also instructed the authorities not to register any fresh FIRs on the same cause of action,' he added. The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by Wajahat Khan Qadri at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata.
