Maharashtra govt announces independent commission for scheduled tribes

The Hindu2 days ago

The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) approved establishing a separate commission for Scheduled Tribes on the lines of a similar Central body.
This decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
A statement by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said the Centre has two separate commissions for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), which deal with different issues. Accordingly, it is necessary to have two separate commissions (in the state also).
The CMO said both commissions will function independently. The Cabinet has given in-principle approval for according Constitutional status to the two bodies.
Maharashtra had recommended the formation of an independent Commission for Tribals in the 51st Tribal Advisory Committee.
The composition of this Commission will be similar to the Maharashtra Commission for Scheduled Castes- one chairman and four non-governmental members.
Twenty-six new posts will be created for the ST Commission. The cabinet has also sanctioned Rs 4.20 crore for administrative purposes, including office and salaries of members.

Abhishek Banerjee to skip MEA meet; TMC slams Centre for refusing special session

Abhishek Banerjee to skip MEA meet; TMC slams Centre for refusing special session NEW DELHI/KOLKATA: Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said he will not be attending the external affairs ministry meeting scheduled on Thursday and will instead write to EAM Jaishankar his take on the outcome of the delegation's trip. "We toured five countries in the past 15 days. On Thursday, the EAM will convene a meeting. But I will not be able to attend that. I have some pre-scheduled engagements. I was out of the country for some time. In the meantime, the bye-election for Kaliganj was announced. I have some work in my parliamentary area. I will be busy with that the next few days. I will inform the external affairs ministry about my opinion in writing. Once I inform the ministry, I will speak on that matter," Banerjee told reporters. This came on a day Trinamool MP Derek O'Brien lashed out at the Centre for "running away" from holding a special session of Parliament on Operation Sindoor . O'Brien made the remarks after it was announced that the monsoon session of Parliament would be held from July 21 to Aug 12. "All important matters" can be discussed in the session, Union minister Kiren Rijiju said, adding that every Parliament session was a "special session". "Parliamentophobia (noun) - My word for the acute condition of a (Modi) govt who have a morbid fear of facing Parliament. Running away from a special session," O'Brien said in a post on X. Speaking to reporters later, he said, "TMC studied the past announcements and usually the session is announced around 19 days ahead of the date of commencement. This time they announced it 47 days ahead. So scared!"

Communal post case: Influencer Sharmishtha Panoli gets bail by Calcutta HC; to furnish bail bond of Rs 10,000

Sharmishtha Panoli (File photo) NEW DELHI: The Calcutta high court on Thursday granted interim bail to social media influencer and law student Sharmishtha Panoli, nearly a week after her arrest for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through an Instagram video. Panoli was arrested on May 30. The high court directed Panoli to furnish a bond worth Rs 10,000. The 22-year-old, who was taken into custody by Kolkata Police from Gurugram last Friday, had been sent to judicial custody by a local court in Kolkata till June 13. However, her legal team moved the high court seeking relief, arguing that the case was a matter of free speech and that Panoli had already removed the controversial video and issued an apology. Her counsel, Md Samimuddin, said the court directed the state to ensure Panoli receives basic amenities while in custody, noting that such provisions were currently lacking. 'The High Court has also instructed the authorities not to register any fresh FIRs on the same cause of action,' he added. The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by Wajahat Khan Qadri at the Garden Reach police station in Kolkata. He accused Panoli of sharing 'communal' content in a video discussing Bollywood's silence on 'Operation Sindoor'. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Launch at Godrej Sector 12 | Luxurious 3 & 4 BHK Homes @₹2.91 Cr* Godrej Majesty Book Now Undo However, police have since registered an FIR against Qadri himself for allegedly posting inflammatory content online. He is now absconding, officers confirmed. Sharmishtha's arrest sparked backlash from legal circles. Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman of the Bar Council of India, called it a 'grave miscarriage of justice' and accused the West Bengal government of selectively enforcing laws based on community identity.
