Ralph Macchio's Secret Talent That Played a Key Role in His 'Karate Kid' Success
Ralph Macchio showed off some tap dancing moves on Live with Kelly and Mark
The Karate Kid star told hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos his tap skills could help with karate moves
Macchio stars in the latest installment of the Karate Kid universe, Karate Kid: LegendsRalph Macchio is a man of many talents — acting, karate, and ... tap dancing!
While the Karate Kid: Legends star opened up about his childhood on Friday's episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, such as how he worked for his father's laundromat growing up, he also revealed a unique skill that helped with his famous Karate Kid roles.
"I wanted to be Gene Kelly," Macchio told hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos of taking tap dancing classes as a kid. "My mom and I used to watch the old movie musicals when I was a kid."
"That's where I sort of [was] bit with the bug of wanting to perform," Macchio added, noting that the choreography skills he learned for tap could transfer to karate moves. "One, you point your toes, and the other, you flex."
With a little encouragement from Ripa and Consuelos, the Cobra Kai actor got up and showed a few tap moves. Despite Macchio feeling his skills were a little rough, Ripa and Consuelos plus the audience applauded for seeing the original Karate Kid in action.
After recently wrapping the sixth and final season of Netflix's Karate Kid spinoff series Cobra Kai, Macchio reprises his role of Daniel LaRusso for the latest installment of the Karate Kid franchise — Karate Kid: Legends. The film also stars Jackie Chan's Mr. Han, who appeared in the 2010 Karate Kid remake, and new protagonist Li Fong (played by Ben Wang).
Macchio told PEOPLE at the New York City premiere of Karate Kid: Legends that the sixth film of the martial arts franchise "has different [and] more of like an early Jackie Chan movie style, a Hong Kong style."

"The fight [scenes], the cameras are really wide lenses inside the fights. There's humor laced throughout and there was always humor in the Karate Kid films, but the original films we made was kind of cinema magic, very romantic," Macchio said. "Wide, long takes, dialogue scenes that breathe. This is a quicker pace for this generation, but laced with humor, excitement, next level martial arts and Ben Wang is a rock star in the movie."
"And the reason I'm in this movie is to pay that legacy forward," Macchio added. "Shedding a little piece of Miyagi forward. It's never the wrong thing to do in Daniel LaRusso's eyes and in Ralph Macchio's eyes."
Karate Kid: Legends is now playing in theaters.

How old are the Ginny and Georgia cast? The characters vs the actors who play them
It's back! Ginny and Georgia season three has officially landed on Netflix, reuniting us with one of the most chaotic towns in America - Wellsbury. The third season sees Georgia face trial for the murder of Cynthia's husband Tom and if that wasn't already dramatic enough, there's friendship breakdowns, new romances and high school dances to contend with. But amongst all the madness we can't help but be distracted by one small, but very important detail - Austin is supposed to be nine years old?! The younger child of Georgia Miller, Austin, is meant to be nine years old in the events of season two and three, but given it's been two years since the show was last on TV, Diesel La Torraca who plays Austin has of course grownup and is now a 14 year old playing a nine year old. Yeah the maths isn't mathing on this one. And he's not the only cast member in Ginny and Georgia to be playing a different age to his own, in fact the majority of the teenage cast are played by fully grown adults in their mid 20s. Curious to know more? These are the exact ages of the Ginny and Georgia cast and the characters they play.

Pregnant Meghan Markle Drops Low in 'Baby Mama Dance' Hospital Video with Prince Harry to Induce Labor with Princess Lilibet
Meghan Markle celebrated her daughter Princess Lilibet's fourth birthday by sharing a throwback photo of the viral dance trend she did with Prince Harry to induce labor with Lilibet In the video, Meghan held her baby bump as she shook her hips, raised her hands in the air and spun around "When spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work - there was only one thing left to do!" Meghan joked on Instagram Meghan Markle shared a glimpse into a candid moment while going into labor with her daughter, Princess Lilibet, in honor of her fourth birthday on Wednesday, June 4. In the clip, filmed in a hospital labor and delivery room, Meghan, 43, dances in a black dress while cradling her baby bump while Starrkeisha's "The Baby Momma Dance" songplays in the background — the same song that fueled a viral social media dance trend at the time. Seconds later, Prince Harry, 40, enters the frame and begins to dance with his wife. Meghan shakes her hips in the clip, puts her arms in the air and spins while Harry shows off his own moves, even dropping it "down low" with Meghan as the lyrics command. "Four years ago today, this also happened. Both of our children were a week past their due dates… so when spicy food, all that walking, and acupuncture didn't work - there was only one thing left to do! 😂," Meghan wrote in the caption on Instagram. While the couple looked joyful in their lighthearted video, Harry revealed harrowing details behind his daughter's birth at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California in his 2023 memoir, Spare. The Duke of Sussex wanted to be the first person Lilibet saw when she was born, so he "went and stood beside the doctor," he wrote in his book. "We both crouched. As if about to pray. The doctor called out: The head is crowning. Crowning, I thought. Incredible." He continued, "The skin was blue. I worried the baby wasn't getting enough air. Is she choking? I looked at Meg. One more push, my love! We're so close." Harry recalled how the doctor helped guide his hands during the birth, writing that he heard "a scream, then a moment of pure liquid silence." "There was only this intense present, and then the doctor turned to me and shouted: Now!" Harry wrote. "Gently, but firmly, as I'd seen in films, I pulled our precious daughter from that world into this." Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage?
