Delhi police busts inter-state arms racket; one arrested, 10 pistols seized
PTI
New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) Delhi Police has busted an inter-state firearms racket with the arrest of a 29-year-old man and recovered 10 semi-automatic pistols, 20 live cartridges and seven extra magazines from his possession, an official said on Saturday.
Police arrested Amit Kumar, a resident of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, from near Jasola, DCP (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said.
Kumar was an active member of a Madhya Pradesh-based arms racket who supplied more than 150 pistols in Delhi-NCR over the last two years, the officer said.
'In view of the upcoming Independence Day and the festive season, police had intensified surveillance on illegal arms suppliers. Acting on a tip-off, a team laid a trap and intercepted Kumar around 8.45 pm on Friday, leading to his arrest," the DCP said.
During interrogation, Kumar disclosed that he procured pistols from a manufacturer-cum-supplier in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district. He used to buy each pistol for Rs 12,000-15,000 and sell them for Rs 30,000-40,000 to criminals in Delhi-NCR and other states, the DCP said.
A graduate, Kumar worked as a recovery agent with a private bank in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district. He entered the arms trade after being lured by a fellow villager.
Initially working as a carrier, he later developed his own network and started supplying firearms independently, the officer said. PTI BM ARI

Shadow group in CM's office controlling police: Satheesan
Kochi: Opposition's allegation that police are not governed by chief minister but by a shadow group within his office is underscored by vigilance court's verdict against ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, said opposition leader V D Satheesan on Friday. Speaking to the media, Satheesan said it was a reality that an invisible force, which does anything for its favourites, was hiding under govt's guise, controlling both govt and police. The court asked which invisible force decided to give a clean chit and referred to it as an invisible force because it couldn't explicitly call it a shadow group, as opposition claims, he said. "Anyone with common sense can understand from reading the vigilance investigation report that it was an attempt to protect someone. Chief Minister must respond to this; silence is not an option. Court raised serious allegations against chief minister and police administration. Ajith Kumar met the RSS leader on behalf of chief minister. This officer did several questionable things for govt," Satheesan alleged. Although opposition's allegation of the officer meeting the RSS leader was initially denied, later everyone admitted it, he said. "Chief minister improperly helped the officer who was involved in everything and nepotism is evident," he alleged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo "When a report on Palarivattom bridge cited engineering errors, the current ruling party alleged corruption and tried to imprison the then-minister. Now, every month, a bridge collapses, but Palarivattom bridge hasn't fallen. A bridge worth Rs 24 crore has now fallen into the river. If a public works department bridge collapses one day, a national highway will collapse for three consecutive days. They are competing in this regard. Yet, Kerala govt has no complaints against National Highways Authority of India or surface transport department," said Satheesan. No one in BJP spoke about voter list irregularities and despite serious allegations, even the Prime Minister remained silent, he said. "There are numerous allegations regarding elections in Thrissur, with no response. BJP leaders say those who made allegations should be hanged. Not all votes in Wayanad parliamentary constituency have been enrolled in voters list, let alone fake votes," he said. "When the local legislative assembly voter list is released, it will be specially scrutinised. UDF prioritises preparation and voter list purification in every election. There was an attempt to add fake votes in Palakkad. What happened in Thrissur district in 2021 won't happen in upcoming elections. Legislative assembly elections in Thrissur will reflect UDF's bright comeback in state," he added. Satheesan said that he had no quarrel with SNDP Yogam or its general secretary Vellappally Natesan. HC commutes life term of ex-operative to 10 years RI
Kochi: Kerala high court commuted the life sentence imposed on Subahani Haja alias Haja Moidheen of Thodupuzha, an accused in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case for allegedly joining the proscribed terrorist organisation ISIS and fighting for them in Mosul, Iraq, in 2015, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. A bench comprising Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar on Thursday, while considering Haja's appeal challenging his conviction and sentence, upheld the rest of the findings and sentences imposed on him by a special court under various sections of UAPA and IPC. According to the prosecution, Haja travelled to Istanbul in Turkey on a tourist visa in April 2015, crossed the border into Iraq and underwent physical and arms training in Mosul. He was deployed on the war front but sustained an injury during training and was hospitalised. Following repeated requests, he was allowed to return to India in Sept 2015, after which he worked as a salesman-cum-accountant at Kadayanallur, Tamil Nadu, for about a year. In 2016, NIA arrested him upon receiving information about his association with ISIS. In 2020, the special court, Ernakulam, sentenced Haja to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh under Section 20 of UAPA (membership of a proscribed terrorist organisation). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo He was also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment totalling 19 years and fined Rs 2 lakh for other offences, including waging war against an Asiatic power in alliance with govt of India and supporting a terrorist organisation, with all sentences to run concurrently. On appeal, the division bench noted that the offences committed by Haja were grave and serious. However, it also considered the absence of prior criminal antecedents, his expression of repentance and the possibility of reformation. The court observed that after his return from Iraq, no specific overt acts were alleged against him except for an unsuccessful attempt to procure explosives. Further, it found that the special court had not stated any reason for awarding the maximum sentence under Section 20 of UAPA. In view of these factors, the bench commuted his life sentence to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
