Delhi police busts inter-state arms racket; one arrested, 10 pistols seized

New Delhi, Aug 9 (PTI) Delhi Police has busted an inter-state firearms racket with the arrest of a 29-year-old man and recovered 10 semi-automatic pistols, 20 live cartridges and seven extra magazines from his possession, an official said on Saturday.
Police arrested Amit Kumar, a resident of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, from near Jasola, DCP (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said.
Kumar was an active member of a Madhya Pradesh-based arms racket who supplied more than 150 pistols in Delhi-NCR over the last two years, the officer said.
'In view of the upcoming Independence Day and the festive season, police had intensified surveillance on illegal arms suppliers. Acting on a tip-off, a team laid a trap and intercepted Kumar around 8.45 pm on Friday, leading to his arrest," the DCP said.
During interrogation, Kumar disclosed that he procured pistols from a manufacturer-cum-supplier in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district. He used to buy each pistol for Rs 12,000-15,000 and sell them for Rs 30,000-40,000 to criminals in Delhi-NCR and other states, the DCP said.
A graduate, Kumar worked as a recovery agent with a private bank in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district. He entered the arms trade after being lured by a fellow villager.
Initially working as a carrier, he later developed his own network and started supplying firearms independently, the officer said. PTI BM ARI

Kochi: Opposition's allegation that police are not governed by chief minister but by a shadow group within his office is underscored by vigilance court's verdict against ADGP M R Ajith Kumar, said opposition leader V D Satheesan on Friday. HC commutes life term of ex-operative to 10 years RI
Kochi: Kerala high court commuted the life sentence imposed on Subahani Haja alias Haja Moidheen of Thodupuzha, an accused in an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case for allegedly joining the proscribed terrorist organisation ISIS and fighting for them in Mosul, Iraq, in 2015, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. A bench comprising Justices V Raja Vijayaraghavan and K V Jayakumar on Thursday, while considering Haja's appeal challenging his conviction and sentence, upheld the rest of the findings and sentences imposed on him by a special court under various sections of UAPA and IPC. According to the prosecution, Haja travelled to Istanbul in Turkey on a tourist visa in April 2015, crossed the border into Iraq and underwent physical and arms training in Mosul. He was deployed on the war front but sustained an injury during training and was hospitalised. Following repeated requests, he was allowed to return to India in Sept 2015, after which he worked as a salesman-cum-accountant at Kadayanallur, Tamil Nadu, for about a year. In 2016, NIA arrested him upon receiving information about his association with ISIS. On appeal, the division bench noted that the offences committed by Haja were grave and serious. However, it also considered the absence of prior criminal antecedents, his expression of repentance and the possibility of reformation. The court observed that after his return from Iraq, no specific overt acts were alleged against him except for an unsuccessful attempt to procure explosives. Further, it found that the special court had not stated any reason for awarding the maximum sentence under Section 20 of UAPA. 15 days before flying to UK for studies, teen dies by suicide in Mumbai's Goregaon
Mumbai: Aarey police said the 17-year-old daughter of a real estate developer was battling depression for two years and did not leave any suicide note. The junior college student was slated to fly to London in 15 days to join a college where she had enrolled for further studies. The deceased, an only child, was undergoing treatment for depression. "At the time of the tragedy, she was in her bedroom in the family's 23rd-floor flat while her mother was in the kitchen and her grandparents were in another room. Her father was out for work. She jumped off the bedroom window. The incident was witnessed by the building receptionist. According to her parents, depression seems to be the reason for the extreme step. A probe is on," said an Aarey police station official.
