FLORENCE, Italy - Abde Ezzalzouli emerged as Real Betis' hero on Thursday after he netted an extra-time winner to make them the first Spanish side to reach the Conference League final with a 4-3 aggregate victory over Fiorentina, setting up a showdown with Premier League side Chelsea.
While Betis were celebrating reaching their first European final after the second leg ended in a 2-2 draw, Fiorentina were left to digest further disappointment in the competition as they bowed out in the semi-finals following back-to-back final defeats.
The Italian hosts faced an uphill task of overturning a first-leg deficit after Betis won 2-1 in Seville last week and struggled to make any impact during the early exchanges.
Betis increased their advantage when Antony scored on the half-hour mark with a stunning free-kick, curling the ball over the wall and in off the post.
However, just four minutes later, Fiorentina hit back as an unmarked Robin Gosens rose to meet a corner, calmly steering a header into the far corner to the delight of the cheering home fans.
Three minutes before the break, Gosens struck again as he rose above Betis defender Marc Bartra and powered a header into the near top corner from yet another corner, completing a dramatic first-half turnaround for Fiorentina.
The action did not let up and just before the break Betis' Johnny Cardoso unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box that thundered off the crossbar and flew over, leaving the crowd gasping.
Antony nearly snatched a late equaliser for Betis minutes before full time, pouncing on a loose pass to race through one-on-one with David De Gea who pulled off a stunning double save.
It took seven minutes of extra time before Antony managed to send a cross past De Gea and into the path of an onrushing Ezzalzouli, who easily scored from close range.
Betis will now play the final in Wroclaw, Poland, on May 28 against a Chelsea side that easily dispatched Swedish club Djurgarden with a 5–1 aggregate win. REUTERS

CINCINNATI – Defending champions Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka led the way into the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals on Aug 13, with Carlos Alcaraz hot on their heels with a straight-sets victory of his own. Sinner shrugged off a mid-match weather delay lasting nearly three hours as he advanced 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) over Adrian Mannarino of France. Sabalenka, taken to three sets in her previous match with Emma Raducanu, regrouped after surrendering a second-set service break to defeat Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 7-5. Alcaraz, the second seed who has reached the finals of his last six tournaments, hammered Italian lucky loser Luca Nardi 6-1, 6-4 in an impressive victory. 'This match was my best so far of the tournament,' the Spanish world No. 2. said. 'At the start I wanted to get better each day and I've done that. 'I'm proud of that and happy with how I felt the ball and how I moved,' added Alcaraz, who next faces ninth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev. World No. 1 Sinner, playing his first tournament since winning Wimbledon, notched his 24th consecutive hardcourt match victory. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Luis Enrique applauds goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier after dream PSG debut

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Paris Saint Germain's Lucas Chevalier celebrates with the trophy after winning the UEFA Super Cup on Aug 13. UDINE – Lucas Chevalier impressed on his debut as Paris Saint-Germain's new first-choice goalkeeper in their Uefa Super Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Aug 13, drawing praise from manager Luis Enrique. The 23-year-old former Lille goalkeeper was thrust into the spotlight after Enrique made it clear earlier this week that Gianluigi Donnarumma had been axed from the squad, prompting the Italian international to begin searching for a new club. Chevalier, who arrived at the club on Aug 10, earned praise from teammates and fans alike after making several acrobatic saves, including Micky van de Ven's attempt during the penalty shoot-out. 'We relied on Lucas... he just arrived, but it was time for him to show off. We're very happy because he made it,' Enrique told reporters after PSG beat Tottenham 4-3 on penalties. 'This is PSG, you have to know how to handle the pressure, Lucas is a top-class goalkeeper, he's capable of it. He did his job, welcome to him with a trophy.' Enrique also admitted that the publicity surrounding Donnarumma was far from ideal for the club. 'Everyone was talking about the situation; his (Lucas's position) wasn't easy, but he showed great character,' the Spaniard added. PSG had produced a late comeback to draw the match 2-2. Spurs looked set to get their hands on the trophy in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank, as they led 2-0 just after half-time at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy. Van de Ven gave last season's Europa League winners the lead on 39 minutes and Cristian Romero – who officially replaced Son Heung-min as captain – got their second goal three minutes into the second half. However, PSG were rescued by two substitutes as Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos headed in the equaliser four minutes into injury time. That meant a penalty shoot-out, although it started badly for PSG when Vitinha put their first kick wide. Chevalier then saved from van de Ven and Mathys Tel missed the target, allowing Nuno Mendes to convert the winning penalty for PSG. Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pedro Porro all scored from the spot for Spurs, in vain. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Lee converted for PSG before Mendes stepped up. It is the first time PSG, or indeed any French club, have lifted the Super Cup, as they take their tally of trophies won in 2025 to five. 'I am proud. We have hadn't much preparation but you could see that football is not only about the physical aspect – it is also about the mental aspect, being in the right place, having the right tactics,' PSG captain Marquinhos told broadcaster Canal Plus. It is the perfect start to the new campaign for Enrique's team, who had a shortened off-season break having lost the Fifa Club World Cup final to Chelsea exactly a month ago. They only began pre-season training a week ago and played no friendly matches before this game. PSG now begin the new Ligue 1 campaign on Aug 17 away to Nantes, while Spurs will turn their attentions to the start of the Premier League season as they take on Burnley at home on Aug 6. 'I think we played a very good game against one of the best teams in the world,' Frank told TNT Sports. 'I think we had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes until the 2-1 goal. Then of course that shifted a little bit the momentum, but there was so much positive. 'I am so proud of the team, the players, the club, the fans. I think there is a lot to be happy with.' Premier League CEO Richard Masters pleads for patience in Man City case

Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox There is yet to be a decision over Manchester City's disciplinary case involving 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches. LONDON – English Premier League chief executive Richard Masters defended the league's judicial process on Aug 13, amid criticism over the slow pace of Manchester City's disciplinary case involving 115 charges of alleged financial rule breaches. Speaking at a Premier League season launch event in Liverpool, he said that once charges are brought forward, the matter is handed over to an independent panel, which operates autonomously. 'It's an independent judiciary essentially,' Masters told Sky Sports. 'They are then in charge of the process and its timings. They hear the case, they decide the outcome and we have no influence over it or its timing.' He refrained from speculating on when a decision might be reached, but acknowledged the frustration surrounding lengthy legal processes. 'My frustration is irrelevant really, I just have to wait. Legal processes rarely take less time than you anticipated. But we have to be patient,' he added. Masters also addressed speculation around staging Premier League matches abroad, after La Liga's plan for a game between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami received approval from the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on Aug 11. 'I think that (La Liga) match that's been talked about, there's a long road to go yet about whether that will actually happen,' Masters said. 'It hasn't changed our view about matches abroad. We did look at the 39th game way back when with lots of controversy... Our objective at the time was how to grow the Premier League around the world. We've been able to do that through different means.' Masters also responded to concerns over the competitiveness of newly promoted clubs, after all three teams relegated last season – Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton – had only just come up. The same thing happened in the 2023-24 campaign when Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United returned to the second tier after only one season in the top-flight. Masters pointed to success stories like Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham, who were promoted for the 2022-23 season and are 'performing extremely well in the Premier League three years later'. 'It's never going to be easy... The Premier League is becoming more competitive. The Championship is a fantastic division. We want it to be successful. We want there to be an influx of different clubs coming in and out. So it's something we need to keep an eye on,' he said. To conclude his speech, Masters confirmed that the newly established independent football regulator is expected to begin operations in October or November. 'We are the first country, major football nation to be regulated in this way,' he said. 'The Premier League operates in a global environment. So naturally we have some concerns, but the main thing is that I think the regulator doesn't start from the position that football is somehow broken in this country... 'All of the key indicators are really positive for the whole of the pyramid, for the England teams, men's and women's. So, I think there is lots to be really proud about and the regulator should really be intervening where absolutely necessary.' The new Premier League season kicks off on Aug 15 when defending champions Liverpool host Bournemouth. REUTERS
