TVB Actress Kelly Fu Devours 12 Durians In Malaysia While Co-Star Owen Cheung Struggles With One

Hype Malaysia09-07-2025
It's not uncommon for people to be put off by the king of fruits, durian. With its pungent smell and spiky outer layer, many find it intimidating. However, it's often this unique appearance that draws in tourists and foreigners who've never experienced durian, a local delicacy. That was exactly the case for Kelly Fu (傅嘉莉) during her visit to Malaysia.
On 6th July (Sunday), the actress arrived in the country with her co-star Owen Cheung (張振朗) to promote their new crime series, 'D.I.D 12', also known as '刑偵12'. Since it was Kelly's first time in Malaysia, she was eager for the full experience, and Owen was more than happy to play host.
It's well known that Owen enjoys visiting Malaysia to try its unique dishes; however, durian still isn't something he can handle. So while the actor was happily slurping down a bowl of prawn soup, Kelly had already started digging into durians – and ended up eating 12 pieces. She offered the 37-year-old actor a taste, and being the gentleman he is, he accepted.
In addition to durian, Kelly also tried other local dishes, including Ikan Sambal with rice. 'In addition to eating durian, I also tried patin fish with sambal sauce for the first time. It's so fragrant, even more fragrant than XO sauce, and it goes so well with rice!' she said in an interview with Sin Chew, clearly showing her love for bold and spicy flavours.
Both Kelly and Owen expressed how grateful they felt for the warm support from their Malaysian fans. Even with a packed schedule, they made sure to try several local dishes fans had suggested. Kelly was especially excited to explore Malaysia's flavours for the first time, while Owen enjoyed rediscovering familiar favourites.

Owen recalled a past visit where he ate prawn noodles at a small shop without air conditioning. Although he didn't get the chance to return this time, he now has a reason to come back. Between the food, the fans, and the experience, Malaysia clearly made a lasting impression on them both.

MIC Boss To Scammed Malaysian ‘National Geographic' Photographer: 'Don't Give Up, Bro!'

Subscribe to our FREE The young photographer who was fooled by a fake National Geographic letter has received some solid advice from MIC's big boss. MIC president Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran told the guy: 'When one door slams shut, 10 others swing open.' A few weeks ago, news sites were abuzz about how 32-year-old Tinesh Sritharan was supposedly selected for National Geographic's prestigious Explorer program in Kenya. The young photographer was so excited, he slid into Senator Dato Sivarraajh Chandran's Instagram DMs to share his good news. He presented his 'acceptance letter' and emails that looked legit enough to fool anyone. Impressed by his story, Sivarraajh took him to meet the MIC president. The boss was thrilled to meet an ambitious young Malaysian Indian and decided to back him with RM15,000 for his trip to Kenya. MIC Still Has His Back Then National Geographic dropped the bombshell: the letter was fake. 'Look, if the kid got conned, we feel bad for him,' said Sivarraajh, adding that nobody should have their dreams messed with by scammers. But MIC isn't throwing the photographer under the bus – 'The scam is in the letter, not the kid,' the former Cameron Highlands MP explained. The advice was simple: don't let this setback kill your dreams. You're already in Kenya, mate. Make the most of it and come home with photos that'll make everyone proud. According to Sivarraajh, the MIC leader has no problem with the photographer continuing his work in Kenya, fake letter or not. Photographer Calls Out the Scam Professional photographer Syahrin Abd Aziz was one of the first to suspect something was amiss with the entire National Geographic story. He pointed out major red flags: the guy had to fund his own 'assignment,' his animal photos were actually taken at Zoo Negara, and nobody in Malaysia's tight-knit photography scene had ever heard of him. 'Getting an assignment from National Geographic isn't easy – you need a powerful portfolio and extensive experience,' Syahrin explained. He emphasised that National Geographic rarely works with newcomers, preferring established photographers who are already household names in the field of photojournalism. The photographer noted that when National Geographic assigns real assignments, they provide a representative and cover the costs – they don't require you to pay your own way. In Malaysia's photography scene, we all know each other, so whatever we do, the community will find out. READ MORE : Parts of this story have been sourced from . Sarawak records over RM1bil per month in tourism receipts from January to June this year

State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah launching the WAK Festival calendar reveal on Wednesday (Aug 13). - ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE/The Star KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded tourism receipts exceeding RM1bil every month from January to June this year, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said this was the best performance achieved by the tourism industry so far. "Tourism receipts include spending on hotels, restaurants, transport, crafts and related expenditure. "In other words, it's the money going into the industry, not just in Kuching but other parts of Sarawak," he said at the calendar reveal of the WAK Festival here on Wednesday (Aug 13). Abdul Karim said the tourism receipts reflected the high numbers of visitors coming to Sarawak in the first half of the year. He said Sarawak was well on track to hit its target of five million visitors this year, having received 2.4mil up to June. "We are looking at 500,000 visitors a month from July onwards, so I'm confident we can reach our target," he said. Abdul Karim said events like the WAK Festival were among the contributing factors attracting tourists to Sarawak. He said the festival, which runs throughout October, had grown from its humble beginnings in 2017, expanding from Kuching to Sibu and Miri last year. "What I love about WAK is that it comes from the community, for the community. "October, which used to be a quiet time, has now turned into an interesting month with a lot of events," he said. Festival director Donald Tan said the WAK acronym was evolving into a new identity this year following the festival's expansion to Sibu and Miri. "WAK used to stand for What About Kuching. We've decided to position ourselves as the WAK Festival which now stands for We Are Kindred," he said. Tan said this year's festival was themed "Roots" to celebrate Sarawak's cultural and historical roots. "It reminds us to honour our shared past even as we grow new connections that branch outward, nurturing fresh collaborations that breathe life into our city's creative landscape," he said. The festival will feature 49 collaborators, 67 unique events and 369 daily activities spread across 44 venues in and around Kuching. Crafts, food and music events are among the highlights. "We want to take creative and artistic activities to street level to engage with the community," Tan said.

By Mohd Ashraf Syafiq Mazlan SEPANG, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Patriotic and traditional tunes, accompanied by captivating cultural performances, filled Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 today during the PENTARAMA MERDEKA@KLIA programme organised by the Information Department (JAPEN). The programme, held in collaboration with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), was organised in conjunction with National Day and Malaysia Day 2025 (HKHM 2025), with a focus on showcasing patriotism through casual performances. PENTARAMA MERDEKA@KLIA also featured cultural dance performances and an interactive session with visitors, including a patriotism-themed quiz. JAPEN director-general Julina Johan said hosting the programme at the country's main gateway allowed both locals and foreign visitors to experience Malaysian culture and witness the spirit of patriotism among its people. 'The approach this time is quite different. We are not only presenting patriotic songs but also highlighting Malaysia's cultural elements. 'We have (traditional) songs from Pahang, Perak and Perlis…we are giving them a new lease of life as we want to introduce them to visitors at KLIA Terminal 1,' she told Bernama here today. Also present were KLIA Terminal 1 operations general manager Abdul Hasman Abdul Muhimim and JAPEN Communications and Community Development Service Division director Muhammad Najmi Mustapha. Julina said PENTARAMA MERDEKA@KLIA also served as a platform to showcase Malaysia's identity and national spirit to the world.
