Trade, investment and technology: Zardari reaffirms commitment to expand ties with Russia
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to further expand bilateral cooperation with the Russian Federation in the areas of trade, investment, technology, and people-to-people exchanges.
Speaking at a ceremony marking the 80th Anniversary of Victory of the Russian Federation in the Great Patriotic War, President Asif Ali Zardari highlighted the growing momentum in Pakistan-Russia relations and expressed confidence that recent high-level interactions between the two countries have laid a solid foundation for deeper engagement and greater understanding.
'I am confident that the bonds of friendship between Pakistan and Russia will continue to grow stronger,' the president said, adding that both nations have 'immense potential to expand cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and people-to-people contacts.'
The president extended warm congratulations to President Vladimir Putin, the Russian government, and the people of Russia on the occasion, saying that the victory showed the strength and resilience of the Russian people, as well as their strong commitment to peace and prosperity. He noted that people from the Indus Valley—modern-day Pakistan—had also played a critical role in defeating Nazism as part of the British Army.
Recalling his 2011 visit to Russia, President Zardari acknowledged President Putin's efforts to promote Pakistan-Russia friendship. He described Russia as a 'key global power' and highlighted its role in promoting regional peace and stability, especially its role in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India.
The president also reaffirmed the commitment to building bridges of understanding and cooperation between Pakistan and Russia, besides urging the need to work together for a better future for the region and the world.

Construction industry says concerned at curbs on non-filers
KARACHI: The construction industry has raised serious concerns over proposed financial restrictions for non-tax filers in the federal budget 2025-26, warning that the measures could accelerate capital flight from this sector already experiencing negative growth for the last three consecutive years. Hassan Bakshi, Chairman, Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD), expressed these concerns while speaking to Business Recorder on Wednesday, highlighting the potential adverse impact on the construction sector's recovery prospects. He said the primary concern is about the proposed restrictions that would bar non-filers from purchasing immovable property in Pakistan. He argued that such measures would create a negative impact on the construction sector that is already struggling to regain momentum. According to Bakshi, ABAD has already engaged with Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif regarding these restrictions. 'We have discussed it with the prime minister, expressing our concerns on the said restriction.' He believed that the proposal was neither included under the IMF recommendations nor with the PM's consent, who has assured ABAD not to implement it. 'ABAD is planning a delegation visit to Islamabad next week to further discuss the matter with the high-ups,' he informed. Rather than imposing pre-emptive restrictions, Bakshi suggested, allowing non-filers to purchase immovable properties, which would provide the government with comprehensive financial details of these individuals. This information could then be utilised to bring them into the tax net, which he believed would be a more inclusive approach for broadening of tax base. Chairman ABAD warned that the enforcement of these restrictions could have far-reaching consequences beyond domestic markets. 'If the said restrictions were enforced, the construction sector, which is already facing negative growth for the last three years, won't see any healthy business activities in the coming financial year.' Bakshi said that the measures would expedite the flight of capital, especially to Middle Eastern countries, which are now offering partnerships to our developers with their expertise, not investments. He said that withholding tax on property purchases has been proposed to be reduced for the buyers, but the tax burden on sellers has been recommended to increase proportionally, adding that this approach would not create any positive impact, as it merely shifts the tax burden rather than reducing it. Despite the concerns, the ABAD chairman acknowledged several positive proposals in this budget, including the introduction of tax credits to encourage mortgage financing and the reduction in stamp duty for Islamabad. World Day Against Child Labour marked: Collective action needed to provide secure future for our children: President
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari said that child labour is a global challenge that demands collective action by government and civil society to provide a secure future for our children. 'Pakistan, as a signatory to various international conventions aimed at eliminating child labour, is fully committed to ending the exploitation of children. Today, we observed the World Day Against Child Labour, which reminds us to make efforts to protect every child from exploitation and to build a future where children can learn, play, and grow in a safe and dignified environment,' the president said in his message. He said that Pakistan has taken several steps to prevent exploitation and help affected children. He said that Pakistan has enacted the National Commission on Rights of Child Act (2017), the ICT Child Protection Act (2018), the Juvenile Justice System Act (2018), the Employment of Children's Act (1991), and the Domestic Workers Act (2002). He said that Pakistan has also established effective mechanisms and service units for the prevention of child exploitation, child labour, and providing care and rehabilitation to the affected children. He said that such interventions also include the establishment of the National Commission on the Rights of the Child, the Child Protection Institute, and the Child Welfare Bureaus. While the government continues to enforce laws and policies, ending child labour is a joint responsibility, he said, 'I urge employers to strictly follow child labour laws and ensure that their workplaces are free from exploitation. I call on parents and guardians to prioritise the education of their children instead of short-term gains. I urge schools and teachers to identify children at risk of dropping out and keep them in classrooms. The media needs to raise awareness about Child Labour, and philanthropists and civil society should support vulnerable families so that no child is forced into labour due to poverty.' 'Today, I also call upon the international community to pay urgent attention to the suffering of children in conflict zones such as Gaza. Thousands of innocent children in these areas have been displaced, injured, or orphaned due to violence and aggression by the occupation forces. Many children face hunger, trauma, and a heightened risk of being pushed into child labour. These children need immediate global support, protection, and justice,' the president said. He urged government institutions, civil society, human rights defenders, the media, United Nations agencies, educators, parents, and Ulema to take practical steps to end child labour. 'Together, we can dismantle the systems that exploit children and create a Pakistan and a world where every child is free to dream, learn, and build a brighter future,' he said.
