NFL pauses accelerator program aimed at increasing diverse hirings
The NFL will not hold its accelerator program aimed at increasing diversity among coaches at the upcoming spring meetings as the league plans to make changes to the program before bringing it back next year.
The latest event in the program, which began in 2022, was scheduled to have coaching candidates of diverse backgrounds meet with team owners at league meetings next week in Minnesota.
NFL chief administrative officer Dasha Smith said the program will come back in May 2026.
'This will allow us to reimagine the program, reflecting on the feedback and engaging with stakeholders so we can ensure a successful program in the future,' she said in a statement Tuesday. 'We're steadfast in our commitment to strengthen our talent pipeline and create an environment that reflects the diversity of our fan base. The NFL strives to be a unifying force, and we are confident the next evolution of our efforts will take us one step closer to that goal.'
CBS Sports first reported the decision.
The NFL recently held an accelerator program for general manager candidates at league meetings in December, a three-day candidate development program at the scouting combine and the ninth-annual women's forum.
Among the people who have gone through the accelerator program and eventually got top jobs are New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and former Tennessee general manager Ran Carthon.
Smith said the league intends to combine the coaching and front office accelerator programs and remains committed to increasing diverse hirings for key leadership positions.
'We believe diversity of thought and background is essential to our success, and it's reflected in the policies, programs, and partnerships that help us attract, develop, and retain top talent at every level on and off the field,' she said.
The NFL currently has seven minority head coaches and seven minority general managers. Commissioner Roger Goodell reiterated the league's commitment to diverse hiring at the Super Bowl.
'I believe that our diversity efforts have led to making the NFL better,' he said in February in New Orleans. 'It's attracted better talent. We think we're better if we get different perspectives, people with different backgrounds, whether they're women or men or people of color. We make ourselves stronger and we make ourselves better when we have that.'

Injuries ultimately derailed Ford and kept him from reaching his ceiling as a player, but his impact on the 49ers' pass rush in the 2019 season was undeniable. That year he tallied only 252 pass rush snaps, but generated 33 pressures and eight sacks in 14 games including the playoffs according to Pro Football Focus. His presence also helped defensive tackle Arik Armstead post a career-high 10.0 sacks. DT DeForest Buckner added 7.5 sacks from the interior, and rookie DE Nick Bosa racked up 9.0 sacks en route to a Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign. There's a key difference between Ford and Huff in their arrivals in San Francisco. Ford was acquired in 2019 for a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. He was also coming off the best season of his career. Huff was acquired for a Day 3 pick after struggling in his only season with the Eagles. Huff joined the Eagles after the best season of his career in 2023 when he had 10.0 sacks for the New York Jets and then-head coach Robert Saleh. Shanahan is optimistic the 49ers with Saleh as their defensive coordinator offer a better scheme fit that will unlock what Huff discovered in 2023. 'I don't think, he didn't play that much. I think he sat for a number of games. I just think the player didn't change. He just didn't fit as well in their scheme, and just what they do schematically and stuff. I think they wanted to go a different direction with stuff, their outside guys drop into coverage and things like that, being the three-four base and that's something we really never do. So it's a little bit different. But as far as just watching him on tape and stuff, he always kind of looked the same. I just don't think the opportunities were there for him.' 'I just think the player didn't change," Shanahan said. "He just didn't fit as well in their scheme, and just what they do schematically and stuff. I think they wanted to go a different direction with stuff, their outside guys drop into coverage and things like that, being the three-four base and that's something we really never do. It's a gamble, but one the 49ers needed to make with such a thin defensive end group. Huff gives them a true speed rusher who can pin his ears back in passing situations to offer support across from Bosa. If Huff does step in and have a similar impact to Ford, it will give Saleh and the 49ers options in how they can best affect quarterbacks with their revamped defensive front. Philadelphia saw perfect attendance by the roster for practice at the latter. Coach spoke to the Philadelphia media right before the session began. Nolan Smith's name came up towards the end of it, and as he always does, Nick offered high praise for one of his guys. Expect Nolan's fan club to swell and add a few members after this one. 'He's always ready to strike. I love Nolan Smith. He is a tough dude.' That's quite the endorsement and classic Sirianni. That sounds like a rallying cry, something that should be placed on a T-shirt. And, some of you wonder why this guy's players would and have run through a wall for him... Nolan has battled injuries during both his collegiate and pro careers. Most recently, he tore his triceps during the big game. That led to questions about his recovery time and status for the coming season. Fear not. He's been given the seal of approval. He says he's ready to go, and even though it seems erroneous to call him an under-the-radar player. Platforms outside of Philadelphia are naming him as a potential secret weapon. It sounds like Coach agrees. "We have great people in this building, and you know it takes everybody. We have great doctors. We have great strength staff, a training staff that helps me know that when he's ready to go, he's ready to go." Who wouldn't want to play for this guy? He's a teacher and the ultimate hype man. He's like Flavor Flav in a visor, but Flav never won a Super Bowl, and he certainly doesn't have a coaching tree. Nick has a unique way of seeing the game, a unique way of leading, and the Birds have another Vince Lombardi Trophy to place on the shelf because of that.
