Changes to Nielsen's out-of-home measurements could result in biggest Super Bowl TV audience ever
The Super Bowl always becomes the most-watched TV event of the year, by far. This year's could end up being the most-watcher Super Bowl ever.
Even with possible Chiefs fatigue and a rematch of the game played only two years ago.
As noted by Drew Lerner of AwfulAnnouncing.com, the kicker comes from changes Nielsen recently has made when it comes to measuring out-of-home viewing.
Last month, Brian Steinberg of Variety.com explained that Nielsen's Big Data + Panel national audience measurement technology has become an official tool for measuring the total audience.
'The accreditation of Nielsen's Big Data + Panel is a landmark moment for TV ratings, as it will forever change audience measurement,' Nielsen CEO Karthik Rao, said at the time in a statement. 'No one else pairs a high quality, representative panel with a data set this large, pulling from smart TVs and set top boxes in more than 45 million homes. I believe Big Data + Panel gives the industry the most accurate measurement in the history of TV. We're grateful to our clients for helping us innovate once again.'
Super Bowl LVIII between the 49ers and Chiefs generated a total average audience of 123.7 million. Even if the new technology triggers, say, a 10-percent bump to 136.7 million, there are more than 335 million people living in the United States.
Which brings me back to a question I pose every year at this time: What the hell are the 200 million other Americans doing?

It would be just one more accolade to add on to his legacy. Of course, beating the Packers and his replacement in Green Bay, Jordan Love, will be no easy task. There are many questions surrounding the Steelers and Rodgers. Some don't expect the 2025 season to go as planned for the two parties. Despite those doubters, the 41-year-old quarterback is a huge upgrade for Pittsburgh. He had a good year last season, playing all 17 games in his first year back from a torn Achilles to go along with 3,897 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Also, the Steelers have put together a talented roster around the future Hall of Fame quarterback. He has DK Metcalf as his No. 1 wide receiver, a defense capable of being elite, and young playmakers throughout the offense outside of Metcalf. He has always made his teammates better around him throughout his career. He won't be able to do it by himself, but his talent and leadership will be valuable. Mike Tomlin and Rodgers have the potential to be a lethal duo. Hopefully, the two sides will reach their ceiling together and power Pittsburgh back to being a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Looking ahead to Missouri special session, Show Me Sports Investment Act
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri General Assembly's special session reconvenes Monday, and it's the House side of the rotunda's turn in Jefferson City. The state Senate passed a trio of bills last week, one providing a plan to fund up to half of stadium projects for the Chiefs or Royals or Cardinals in St. Louis. The Missouri State House will consider the Show Me Sports Investment Act. The stadium funding bill sets the framework for the Royals and the Chiefs to pay back some of the costs for new and renovated venues. Construction bonds would be paid back using tax money generated at the stadiums and would cover up to 50% of the cost to build it. The teams would have to qualify to have access to that money. The stadiums would need to be built for football or baseball, have more than 30,000 seats, and cost at least half a billion dollars. On Sunday, Rudi Keller, the deputy editor of the Missouri Independent, discussed what could happen as the special session continues this week. I also talked to the Chair of the House Budget Committee earlier today, and it turns out he's not going to be demanding anything new. So as long as there aren't serious demands that endanger the bill from the House, much as the way demands from Senators resulted in a change to the call, I'm anticipating this will go relatively smoothly this week,' Keller said on 4 The People. The stadium funding bill does not have the words 'Royals' or 'Chiefs' in it, but a big reason for the calling of this special session was to find a way to keep both teams in the state and counter the plans of Kansas lawmakers. Nearly a year ago, the Kansas legislature approved a bill to utilize STAR bonds to cover stadium construction costs. The deadline for that bill is coming up at the end of June. 'If Kansas believes that we could really be in the conversation, you could see some limited extension,' said Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson. Advertisement Since winning Super Bowl LIX, and setting a new record for rushing yards in a single season including the playoffs, Barkley has gone on multiple talk shows, signed the richest contract in league history for his position, and has now teased a timeline for his retirement. Woof. Speaking on Chris Long's Green Light Podcast this week, Barkley talked about when he could eventually call it a career. "I'll probably [be] one of those guys that it would be out of nowhere," Barkley said. "I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years and just be like, yeah, it's over. I don't think I will ever lose that passion. Advertisement "The competitive nature is always going to be there. I like, probably my favorite player of all time is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day, like it'll be out of nowhere, I'll probably be ballin', and just be like, yeah, call it quits." Barkley's comments shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. First, the fact he mentioned Sanders' name is extremely relevant. The Detroit Lions Hall-of-Famer retired at the age of 31. Barkley is current 28. The final three years of his current deal with Philadelphia will take him to 31. It makes a lot of sense. There's another part to this, though, that Barkley didn't mention. Sanders went out as a Pro Bowl and All-Pro player. He didn't have the amount of injuries that Barkley has gone through (Barkley has suffered a torn ACL and neck sprain). Advertisement Could Barkley, running behind Philadelphia's elite offensive line, choose to retire before more injuries begin to pile up? It is certainly plausible. Barkley won't be calling it a career this season, though. He's looking to help the Eagles repeat as Super Bowl champions. And so long as Philly's offensive line remains in tact, the team should be perfectly set for another title run with their star running back.
