All eyes on Srikalahasti Devasthanam chairman post

Hans India17-07-2025
Tirupati: The appointment of the chairman for the Srikalahasti Devasthanam Trust Board, which has been lying vacant since March 2024, has emerged as a flashpoint of political competition within the ruling NDA alliance, as key leaders intensify efforts to secure control over the influential temple body.
Despite assuming office in June 2024, the NDA coalition has left the temple post unfilled for over a year, even as several nominated positions across the state were swiftly occupied. With mounting pressure from alliance partners and local party units, sources say the government is now poised to finalise the appointment, possibly in the next couple of days.
TDP leader Rangineni Chenchaiah Naidu of Yerpedu mandal has emerged as the frontrunner, backed firmly by Srikalahasti MLA Bojjala Sudhir Reddy. A former Market Committee chairman and longstanding TDP loyalist, Chenchaiah is also closely associated with the Bojjala political family. During the YSRCP government, he reportedly faced political harassment, including multiple police cases.
While the BJP and Jana Sena initially sought to stake a claim, their prospects appear to have waned. BJP state secretary Kola Anand, who once held the same post under the Congress government led by Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, is said to be lobbying for the position either for himself or a close relative. However, the BJP's case reportedly lacks momentum in the current equation.
Jana Sena's bid effectively collapsed following the arrest of former constituency in-charge K Vinutha and her husband in a murder case. Although Vinutha had proposed a nominee from her family earlier, her expulsion from the party closed all avenues in this regard. Intra-party competition within TDP has also surfaced. Senior leaders Reddyvari Gurava Reddy and Dasharadhachari have directly conveyed their interest to the party high command. Former MLA S C V Naidu has reportedly been lobbying for the candidature of S Praveen, son of ex-legislator Satravada Muniramaiah.
Amid competing claims, the NDA leadership is believed to have conducted an IVRS-based public and cadre opinion survey in the Srikalahasti constituency to assess local sentiment and narrow down options. The feedback from this exercise is expected to be a key factor in the final decision and it is widely speculated that the party high command will tilt in favour of MLA's recommendation paving the way for Chenchaiah Naidu. Obviously, it was under his watch, the temple is said to have witnessed greater administrative order after a period of instability in recent years.
The political weight of the post is underscored by the significance of the temple itself. As one of the six Category-C temples in the State, Srikalahasti sees a daily footfall of thousands and generates over Rs 1 crore in daily revenues. The chairman wields considerable influence over appointments, contracts, and temple development works, making the role a powerful position in both religious and political terms.

Monsoon Session: Delhi CM tables two CAG audit reports of AAP term

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday tabled two Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) reports in the Assembly on the performance of the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. However, there was no discussion on the reports. With this, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has tabled 10 out of 14 pending CAG reports on AAP's governance. The first report, titled 'Welfare of Building and Other Construction Workers', pointed out several shortcomings in the schemes for construction workers, including unreliable data, duplication of registered workers, and discrepancies in the cess collected from builders for workers' welfare. The Delhi Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board (DBOCWWB) is already facing an Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) probe over registration of 'ghost workers'. The other CAG report, titled 'State Finances for the year 2023-24', highlighted a 55.30% fall in revenue surplus in one year — ₹14,457 crore in 2022-23 to ₹6,462 crore in 2023-24. The report also noted a 'continuous mismatch' between receipts and expenditure, indicating a 'rising fiscal stress'. Responding to CAG's findings regarding the welfare of construction workers, AAP said that Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena and the BJP-led Centre should admit 'that they failed in their primary duty of vigilance and posted corrupt officers in sensitive positions'. 'Many loopholes' About the registration of workers with the DBOCWWB, the report said, 'The availability of duplicate images, images with no faces, and multiple registrations of the same face indicates several loopholes in the registration process.' In its audit spanning four years up to March 2023, the CAG also identified 'huge differences' in the records of cess collectors, district records and the board regarding the total cess collection. 'The difference in figures of the cess as per district records and as per the board for four years amounted to ₹204.95 crore. The differences were not reconciled. The department did not maintain a reconciled database of cess assessed, collected and remitted,' stated the report. A Delhi government official said the board had responded to the CAG's findings with a 'point-by-point' rebuttal, which was not included in the report. 'The discrepancies in data were due to a shift to a newer portal for workers created by the National Informatics Centre. The differences in cess collections were due to some builders depositing the money to the district office and others directly to the board's bank account,' the official added. The official added that the performance audit has neither found any 'ghost worker' in the system nor any embezzlement. L-G to blame: AAP In a statement, AAP said, 'Right from 2015, the BJP-appointed L-G appointed his favourite officers at sensitive positions in the government. It was the BJP-appointed L-G who headed the Vigilance and ACB departments. It was the primary duty of the L-G to prevent corruption.'

Bill to penalise litterbugs passed

Porvorim: The House passed the crucial Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) (Amendment) Bill, which has provision to penalise people caught littering not just public spaces, but private ones too. The bill facilitates a fine of Rs 300 for the first offence, with subsequent offences attracting fines of up to Rs 3 lakh. Opposition leader Yuri Alemao asked why imprisonment as a deterrent was not included in the amendment bill. It was passed after a brief discussion on provisions, and with amendments suggested by Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral. The House also passed the Goa Tax on Infrastructure (Amendment) Bill, introduced by TCP minister Vishwajit Rane, which aims to make payment of infrastructure tax by builders and developers easier. Opposition MLAs questioned govt's intent in allowing payments in two installments. To the point raised by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on whether similar benefits will be extended to Goans for constructing their houses, the CM said such a law is in the pipeline. Passing of the Goa Public Universities Bill, with a provision to facilitate setting up of multi-disciplinary universities was deferred till Friday following Opposition members' demands that the bill be sent to the select committee.

Shiv Sena (UBT) workers protest at KMC against corruption in development works in Kolhapur city

Kolhapur: Shiv Sena (UBT) workers held a Kolhapur Municipal Corporation gherao protest at noon on Monday, demanding explanations regarding the alleged massive corruption in development works executed by the civic body. The party workers encircled the main Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) building with two-wheelers and autorickshaws, blocking the entry and exit points. They protested against the drainage pipeline scam and substandard work in road projects undertaken with Rs 100 crore funds. Additionally, concerns were raised over corruption in the Gandhi Maidan cross drain and the installation of heritage-style musical street lamps around the Mahalaxmi temple. A written statement outlining various demands was submitted to KMC additional commissioner Ravikant Adsul. During the protest, Sena (UBT) district president Ravikiran Ingawale criticised the overall administration of the municipal corporation. Ravikiran Ingawale said, "A corruption competition has started in the municipal corporation. A situation has arisen where whoever commits the most corruption gets the most reward. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The officials in the KMC have become corrupt, and they do not want local body elections. The scam of Rs 85 lakh was done in collusion by the people's representatives and officials of Kolhapur. The roads worth Rs 100 crore have been ruined. The accused in corruption cases are made complainants." Ingawale called for the suspension of corrupt officials involved in the drainage scam at Kasba Bawda. "If no action is taken, then it is wrong. The scam of Rs 85 lakh is not a joke. The siege imposed on the municipal corporation on Monday was to wake up the people of Kolhapur," he added. Meanwhile, though administrator K Manjulekshmi appointed an inquiry committee to investigate the entire drainage scam case and submitted a report, no significant action has been taken by the municipal administrator yet. Addressing the Shiv Sena (UBT) party workers, KMC additional commissioner Ravikant Adsul said, "The thorough investigation regarding the Rs 85 lakh fake bill corruption in the drainage pipeline is ongoing. The KMC administrator has already assured of taking strict and legal action against the culprits."
