MIRI (May 14): The Sessions Court here today sentenced an Indonesian boat crewman to four months in jail for overstaying in Malaysia.
Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman also ordered Lamisi, 43, to be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation upon his release from prison.
The accused was charged under Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, punishable under Section 15(4) of the same Act, which provides for a fine of not less than RM10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years, or both, upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, Lamisi was detained aboard a local vessel approximately one nautical mile off Tanjung Baram during a routine inspection by the authorities at around 12.30pm on May 1, 2025.
A check revealed that his social visit pass had expired.

Penang MMEA detains tuna fishing vessel for anchoring illegally
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained a commercial fishing vessel that anchored without permission in the country's waters. Its director Maritime Captain Muhammad Suffi Mohd Ramli said the vessel was detained at 7pm on Friday (June 13) by a maritime patrol team about 10 nautical miles northwest of Muka Head after receiving information from the public at about 5pm. "An inspection found the vessel was carrying about 12 tonnes of tuna and operated by 13 foreign crew members comprising Indonesian and Chinese nationals. "The crew possessed valid identification documents. However, further inspection revealed that the vessel did not have a permit to anchor from the director of the Marine Department as required by law," he said in a statement on Saturday (June 14). Muhammad Suffi said the vessel's captain and chief engineer, aged 50 and 59 respectively, were taken to the MMEA office for further investigation according to Section 491B(1) of the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952. He also said the MMEA will continue to enhance surveillance and enforcement actions to ensure that the country's waters remain safe, secure, and free from any activities that could jeopardise maritime safety and the economy. He added that his team would not compromise with any party that violates the country's maritime laws, especially involving suspicious activities in strategic waters such as Penang. – Bernama

Customs foils four drug smuggling attempts, seizes drugs worth RM2.6mil
SHAH ALAM: The Customs Department foiled four drug smuggling attempts and seized 22,348g drugs worth RM2.61 million from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Pos Malaysia Mail and Courier Centre in April. Selangor Customs director Tun Norlela Azumi Ramli said the first seizure involved an export courier box containing 2,609g of cannabis worth RM193,943 on April 18, while the second seizure occurred when Selangor Customs inspected two courier boxes on April 28 containing 8,935g of cannabis flowers worth RM905,618. The third seizure occurred on April 29, with 7,344g of cannabis flowers worth RM719,712 seized and the fourth seizure involved 4,000g of methamphetamine worth RM800,000 found in two courier boxes on the same day. She said the syndicate behind the smuggling also made false declarations about the courier boxes. The seized drugs have been taken to the North Port Customs Office for further investigation and the cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. – Bernama
