New Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner was congratulated by the Italian prime minister after his Centre Court win over Carlos Alcaraz.
Sinner, the world number one, dethroned two-time defending champion Alcaraz with a 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory to become the first winner, male or female, from Italy.
Prime minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X: 'Another page of history for Italian sport:

'Jannik Sinner triumphs at Wimbledon and makes an entire nation dream. Proud of you, champion!'
A first Wimbledon title was sweet revenge for the 23-year-old, who lost an epic five-setter to Alcaraz in the French Open final lust last month.
Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, commentating on BBC 5 Live, said: 'It's so rightly deserved.
'To be able to come back from that, play another grand slam final against the same opponent and be in the same situation, serving for the match and pull out the game he has put together – I can't imagine what they've been going through until this final.'
Australian Pat Cash, the 1987 champion, felt Sinner's gameplan worked to perfection.
'A great performance. Just great serving, nullifying the drop shots of Alcaraz,' said the BBC pundit.

'Alcaraz was below par on his serve and that made a big difference.'
Alcaraz's stunning shot to take the first set, a flicked backhand cross-court winner on the stretch, had former British number one Tim Henman purring.
'That was a moment of magic,' he said. 'Such a great rally at set point, the control of the racket face from Alcaraz to direct a winner from that position. There is no one else who has that athletic ability.'
Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal posted on his Instagram story: 'Congratulations Jannik Sinner. Special moments!

Revealed: Why a secret bet Jannik Sinner made before his Wimbledon triumph could force his legendary coach to make a surprise U-turn

Jannik Sinner announced at the Australian Open that his coach, Darren Cahill, was set to leave his team at the end of 2025. But it appears the pair may now be set to make a U-turn on that decision. It comes after Cahill and Sinner made a secret bet on Saturday night, prior to his Wimbledon final victory against Carlos Alcaraz, that if he won the final, he would be able to make a final call on whether the coach would stay or go. Cahill has been on the Italian's team since July 2022. In that time, Sinner has won two Grand Slams and has risen to the top of the ATP Tour rankings. 'It will be Darren's last season as my coach,' Sinner said to Eurosport in January. Cahill, meanwhile, revealed that he will not work with another player as a full-time coach after parting company with Sinner. But after Sinner's Wimbledon victory, Cahill was quizzed on whether he would revert on his decision to step back from the pro circuit after Sinner's win. 'I don't want to answer this,' he explained. 'You know what? You just need to ask Jannik that.' And so an Italian reporter at the Championships proceeded to do just that. 'It depends on whether I want to tell the truth or not,' Sinner explained. He then revealed that Cahill may stay on a little longer than first thought. 'We had a bet before the final,' Sinner explained. Paraphrasing Cahill, Sinner said: '"If you win tomorrow, you can decide whether or not I stay".' 'Now the choice is mine,' he added. Sinner made his way to the coach's box after sealing a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4 6-4 6-4 win against Alcaraz on Centre Court. He embraced Cahill with a big hug, before stepping back down to the court for the trophy presentation. 'I've always looked for a person who is honest, a person who gives me a lot, not necessarily only on the tennis court, but [about] how to live,' he said, reflecting on his decision to appoint Cahill. Sinner, though, explained he would love the coach to stick around. 'The season is long. There are a lot of tournaments. You never know,' he added. 'But let's just say I won the bet, and so we'll see what happens.'

Sinner brought unblinking focus to every point – Alcaraz is playing catch-up

With his hopes of a third consecutive Wimbledon title desperately fading with every point, Carlos Alcaraz sat down in his chair on Centre Court after conceding the third set of his final with Jannik Sinner and bluntly unloaded his thoughts on his team: 'From the back of the court, he is much better than me. Much better than me! Much [better]! It's like this,' Alcaraz said, gesturing with his hands to demonstrate the vast gap between his greatest rival and himself. His assessment was not wrong. From a set down, Sinner put together a supreme performance to overturn five consecutive losses against Alcaraz and win his first Wimbledon title, avenging the most difficult loss in his career – his French Open final defeat by Alcaraz in June – at the earliest opportunity. No one in the world strikes the ball with anything close to the destructive power, cleanliness, consistency that the Italian employs to dominate on the court and he used his incessant aggression to constantly rob time from his opponent, making it so difficult for him to impose his own varied game. Perhaps most notably, he pulled off the victory without making any fundamental changes to his approach. He continued to play the relentless brand of attacking tennis that has brought him success, smothering Alcaraz from the baseline. This time, he simply served far better in the decisive moments and he remained bold with his shotmaking deep in the fourth set. The intensity, quality and unblinking focus Sinner brings on every single point was too much for Alcaraz, who this time could not find a miraculous pathway back into the match. Sinner has spent the past 18 months dominating all other foes. Before the final he had compiled an 81 win-two defeat record against players other than Alcaraz since November 2023, and four losses out of four against the Spanish player during that period. This result shifts the dynamics of their rivalry – now Alcaraz must keep up. Spectacularly peaking in the big moments is not enough. Beating Sinner in best-of-five-sets matches now requires consistent, steady excellence across the course of a match with few letdowns. Things will only become more challenging. After achieving such a monumental result on one of Alcaraz's favourite surfaces, Sinner will return to his preferred hard courts more confident than ever before. In the early hours of Monday morning, after Sinner had left Centre Court, drunk champagne with his loved ones and then endured the two-hour plus media blitz reserved for all major champions, he was escorted to the grand five-star hotel Raffles London at the OWO for the annual Wimbledon champions dinner. By the time Sinner, who turns 24 in August, made his appearance, well after midnight, he was in a slightly different mental state compared to the unrelenting focus he exuded on the court. 'We were drinking quite a lot in the last hours,' he said, smiling. 'A bit turning, the head, but it's all good.' Once an actual ball with the famed tradition of the men's and women's champion sharing the first dance of the night, Wimbledon's celebratory event is a low-key dinner these days and the two champions were interviewed by the former British No 1 Laura Robson. Over the last two years, however, the event has nodded to its history by orchestrating a dance on stage. After 1am on Monday, a smiling Iga Swiatek and Sinner could be found awkwardly dancing together to Feel It Still by Portugal. The Man. Towards the end of her interview, Swiatek was asked if she had ever considered offering up one solitary game to her opponent Amanda Anisimova: 'I didn't,' she said after a long pause. 'But I think any athlete would understand that.' Sign up to The Recap The best of our sports journalism from the past seven days and a heads-up on the weekend's action after newsletter promotion Swiatek's 6-0, 6-0 win was a historic moment in the sport. However, it was also a simple reminder of the Polish player's singular dominance. She has demolished almost every prominent player on the tour at some point and she had already inflicted a double bagel on a far more distinguished opponent in a significant final, doing the same to Karolina Pliskova, the former world No 1 who was ranked No 9, in the 2021 Italian Open. A beatdown is always on the cards when Swiatek is in full flow. In comparison to the relief she felt after living up to expectations by maintaining her dominance on clay with three consecutive French Open titles, her sheer joy after winning Wimbledon, a title she never really expected to win, has been striking. This result has further allowed her to understand her potential and will almost certainly spur her on to even greater successes. Now one Australian Open title away from winning the career grand slam, it is hard to imagine that she won't end her playing days having captured every major title possible.

Carlos Alcaraz's response to Emma Raducanu rumours spoke volumes after video emerged

Carlos Alcaraz's response to Emma Raducanu rumours spoke volumes after video emerged A romantic union between Spanish tennis icon Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu has been rumoured for some time but remarks once made by the Spanish star suggested otherwise Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu were spotted filming together at this year's Wimbledon (Image: Getty ) After failing to capture his third consecutive Wimbledon title on Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz will undoubtedly be reflecting on what went wrong. The young Spanish tennis star was outplayed by his rival and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who claimed a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 victory to secure his maiden SW19 title. ‌ This year's outcome stands in stark contrast to the aftermath of the last year's tournament, where Alcaraz was seen enjoying himself at the annual Wimbledon Champions' Dinner, dancing with 2024 women's champion Barbora Krejcikova. ‌ However, it was not the viral video of the dance that sparked gossip for the 22-year-old from Murcia, but rather the presence of Emma Raducanu in the stands during his victory over Novak Djokovic on Centre Court. Following his win, Alcaraz faced questions about the British tennis star, who was eliminated from Wimbledon in the fourth round this year after a thrilling match against Aryna Sabalenka. With persistent rumours surrounding him and Raducanu, Alcaraz was quick to dismiss any romantic speculation, downplaying Raducanu's attendance at the 2024 final. When asked last summer about Raducanu's presence, Alcaraz brushed off the suggestion, saying: "I don't know, I don't know. I think a lot of people came to see the final. Article continues below "I think Novak and I always put on a good game, a show on the court. I think it is a beautiful game to watch. And she is from here, so I imagine that she wanted to come and see it. If there was a Grand Slam in Murcia I would 100 percent go to the final, even if I wasn't playing." Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu are known to be friends (Image: Getty ) However, he couldn't resist a playful jibe as he continued: "I don't know if she came to the finals or if she came to see me. Who knows? You have to ask her, but I hope she enjoyed the final." ‌ Despite Alcaraz's claims that they are merely friends, speculation continues unabated due to their highly anticipated team-up at the US Open. With organisers revealing an impressive line-up for a mixed doubles event during 'Fan Week', the tennis world is building with excitement over the pairing of the two former US Open winners, reports the Express. Alcaraz also recently turned heads when he conceded that Raducanu "will be the boss" in their partnership. In a BBC interview at Wimbledon, the duo fielded questions about what they'd like to inquire of each other before the US Open. "Ooh, good question," Raducanu said. "I would like to know how much of the court he can cover in New York." When Alcaraz was asked the same, he chuckled and replied: "I'm just going to serve and I'm gonna pull myself away and I let her play. She will cover a lot of the court. She will be the boss. I will do whatever she wants me to do." ‌ Following the revelation that Alcaraz put in a "special request" to partner with Raducanu at the event, rumours were sent into overdrive. I mean, the tournament told us about the tournament, the mixed tournament," Alcaraz told the press. "I was thinking that I couldn't play better if it wasn't with Emma. I just asked Emma if she wants to play doubles with me. Yeah, I made that special request." Article continues below Nonetheless, it wasn't all plain sailing as five-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz conceded that Raducanu didn't instantly jump at the opportunity. Raducanu said: "Got to keep them on their toes! I mean, of course, I had to ask my team if they wanted me to play. But for me, when he asked me, I was going to say yes, I just had to kind of go through the formality of asking my coach, so I didn't just make the decision." During her pre-tournament press conference for this year's Wimbledon, Raducanu again faced questions about a potential romantic connection with Alcaraz after they were spotted filming a promo together at the All England Club. She concluded by stating she had a "good time" with him, adding: "We're just good friends."
