Padres RHP Yu Darvish (elbow) to make season debut on Monday

Reuters3 days ago
July 7 - Padres right-hander Yu Darvish will make his season debut when San Diego hosts the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.
The five-time All-Star has been sidelined all season due to elbow inflammation. He was cleared after throwing a side session on Saturday and is expected to be limited to 75 pitches.
"We're excited to have that happen," Shildt said of Darvish's return. "It really did get back to him checking all the boxes -- simulated games, recovering, bullpens ... being able to hold velocity."
Darvish, 38, is in his fifth season with the Padres. He is 39-32 with a 3.79 ERA in 100 starts for San Diego.
Overall, Darvish is 110-88 with a 3.58 ERA in 282 starts with the Texas Rangers (2012-17), Los Angeles Dodgers (2017), Chicago Cubs (2018-20) and Padres. Darvish missed the 2015 season with Texas after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
The Padres certainly could use Darvish, as co-ace right-hander Michael King (shoulder nerve issue) has missed the past six-plus weeks. Up-and-down Dylan Cease is the team's No. 1 starter at the moment.
On May 14, Darvish made a four-inning rehab appearance for Triple-A El Paso but more elbow issues occurred after the start, further pushing back his expected return.
Darvish didn't make a rehab start this time around.
Right-hander Zac Gallen (6-9, 5.45) will start for Arizona in the opener of a four-game series.

WNBA fans fume as Angel Reese beats Caitlin Clark to prestigious honor

WNBA fans have been left stunned after Angel Reese was named as one of the NBA 2K26 cover stars. The Chicago Sky star joins Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Carmelo Anthony in being named as a cover athlete for the popular game. Speaking on her selection as a cover star, Reese told 2K: 'Being on the cover of NBA 2K26 and debuting my first-ever signature shoe with Reebok on that cover, the Angel Reese 1, is more than a milestone - it's a statement. 'It's about representation and showing young girls they can be confident, bold, and take up space unapologetically. 'To be cemented in NBA 2K history is a special honor that reflects not only my journey, but also all the veteran WNBA players who have paved the way before me and the growing impact of the league as a whole'. While Reese beamed at 2K's decision to name her as a cover star, fans on social media were quick to suggest that Caitlin Clark should have been selected instead. One fan wrote: 'Should have been Caitlin Clark'. Similarly, another fan said: 'We all know it was supposed to be Clark'. 'Over CC? Something smells fishy,' another wrote. One user said: 'Reese over clark is just another example of how 2k has fallen'. One fan suggested a different WNBA star, as they wrote: 'Naphessa collier is having a MVP season but sure give it someone who shoots under 42% and leads the league in turnovers'. The Chicago Sky star is currently averaging 13.2 points and 12.9 rebounds per game. She also made WNBA history recently as she became the first player in league history to get 15 or more rebounds in five straight games. Reese and Clark were collegiate rivals before both being drafted into the league last year, where they have remained extremely competitive with one another. Despite Reese's impressive season - which earned her a spot in the All-Rookie First Team and an All-Star selection - it was Clark who was named Rookie of the Year. Fans piled onto social media to claim that 'it was supposed to be Clark' on the cover Clark has also been named as one of the captain's for the upcoming WNBA All-Star game. She snubbed Reese, who will instead feature for Collier's team. Meanwhile, back in May, Clark and Reese's rivalry reignited with the duo were involved in a heated on-court clash. Tempers flared between the two women's basketball superstars when Reese took exception to Clark's hard foul with 4:38 left in the third quarter as the Indiana Fever and Chicago Sky got their 2025 campaigns up and running. After Reese grabbed an offensive rebound, Clark slapped the Sky forward across the arm, knocking the ball away and her arch-nemesis to the floor. Angel, who was visibly furious, quickly jumped up and confronted Caitlin as Fever center Aliyah Boston jumped in between the two players. Following a replay review, the referees upgraded the foul to a flagrant one and called double technical fouls on Boston and Reese. It was Clark's third personal foul.

Baseball star Juan Soto leaves fans furious after complaining about not getting bonus... despite his $765m contract

New York Mets superstar Juan Soto is set to earn $765million on his record-breaking 15-year-contract... but that doesn't mean he not keen to earn a little bit more on top. The former Yankees outfielder was dealt a rare blow earlier this week when he was snubbed for the MLB All-Star rosters, despite being the best-paid player in the entire league. The news means he will miss out on the bonus that comes with it, and Soto's reaction left fans a little frustrated at his perceived greed. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Soto was asked if he was disappointed to have not made the All-Star team. In response, he said: 'What do you think??', to which the reporter replied: 'I don't know, a lot of people want to take a vacation.' But Soto then added: 'I think it's a lot of money on the table if I make it!' Last season, MLB players split a $640,000 prize pool among the winning team at the All-Star Game, totaling a measly - by MLB standards - $20,000 each. Soto, though, reportedly has a bonus clause in his contract earning him a $100,000 windfall if he made the National League All-Star team. Instead, he will have to make do with his $61m annual salary, guaranteed for the next 14 years. On social media, fans took aim at the Dominican superstar, with one writing: 'Always about the money. That's why he's in the situation he's in, and it'll only get worse.' Another added: 'Geez he loses out on $100k. He literally makes over $289k PER GAME during the season. What's wrong with this guy?' Juan Soto was asked if he would have liked to have made the All-Star team: "What do you think? I think it's a lot of money on the table if I make it" — SNY (@SNYtv) July 9, 2025 A third said: 'Now I'm starting to see why the players don't like him. He just signed a 3/4 of a billion dollar contract and he's complaining about what? A few million he lost?' Soto is already a four-time All-Star, making the team from 2021 to 2024, the last of his appearances coming while playing for the New York Yankees. Since crossing the city to the Mets, though, he hasn't quite hit the heights expected of him, starting slowly with his new team. After a boost in recent weeks, he is now hitting .269 with 21 home runs and 52 RBIs.

Andrew Abbott leads struggling Reds over Marlins

July 10 - All-Star Andrew Abbott carried a shutout into the eighth inning Wednesday night for the host Cincinnati Reds, who topped the Miami Marlins 7-2 following back-to-back losses to begin the four-game set. Fellow All-Star Elly De La Cruz had a pair of RBI doubles for the Reds, who snapped a four-game losing streak and avoided falling under .500 for the first time since June 7. Austin Hays and Tyler Stephenson followed De La Cruz with run-scoring singles in the first before Noelvi Marte hit a two-run homer to spark a three-run fourth. Will Benson added a solo shot in the eighth. Heriberto Hernandez spoiled Abbott's shutout bid with an RBI single for the Marlins, who lost for just the fourth time in 16 games. Connor Norby homered in the ninth. Abbott (8-1), who was selected to replace Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Tuesday, allowed six hits and two walks while striking out four. The lefty has surrendered one run or fewer in 12 of his 16 starts this season. Tony Santillan got the final out of the eighth following Ramirez's double before Emilio Pagan surrendered Norby's homer in a non-save situation in the ninth. Marte had two hits for the Reds, who received a hit from every starter. Matt McLain added a stolen base. Five players had one hit each for the Marlins, who recorded fewer than six hits for just the fifth time in their last 35 games dating back to June 1. Sandy Alcantara (4-9) took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four over five innings. The former National League Cy Young Award winner has a 7.22 ERA in his first season following Tommy John surgery and has allowed at least five runs in eight of his 18 starts. --Field Level Media
