Hollywood legend defends TV show from backlash after fans 'vow to boycott'

Metro22-04-2025

A Hollywood star has defended a hit police drama that sparked uproar among viewers over a controversial storyline.
Some have even threatened to boycott ABC's 9-1-1 after it unexpectedly killed main character Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) after seven years.
On Instagram, Angela Bassett, who plays Bobby's wife, Athena Grant-Nash, appeared to address the criticism and admitted the shock death was 'hard.'
The Black Panther star wrote: 'I know this is hard for all of you. It's hard for us, too. Peter's Bobby Nash will be missed, but his character will never be forgotten. He is forever a part of our family.
'We should all give Peter a lot of love as he expands beyond 'the 118' and into all adventures that await him. Love you, my friend. Athena will never be the same.'
Angela, 66, also praised Peter, 59, for being 'kind, funny, compassionate, talented' and for becoming a 'dear' friend.
In the April 17 episode, 'Lab Rats', LA Fire Captain Bobby sacrifices his own life to save some of the members of his crew.
After sharing a final moment with his wife, LAPD Sergeant Athena, Bobby dies from a deadly virus that he and his other firefighters had been trying to contain.
Discussing the reason for Bobby's death, the show's executive producer/showrunner Tim Menear said he felt it was 'time'.
He told Deadline: 'Going into Season 9, I have all these perilous situations that I put the characters into, and I think maybe the writers but also the audience starts to get a little complacent because it's like, well, we all know it's going to all work out fine in the end.'
However, taking to social media, it appears fans of the show were less than happy with Bobby's outcome.
Writing on X, @meebtina said: 'People are not mad about Bobby's death because 'they aren't used to real procedural shows.'
'It's because the 911 writers decided all of a sudden that the looney toon logic doesn't apply to Bobby anymore. We watch this show because we know they don't die, that's the comfort.'
@pecuIiarblue added: 'Part of the whimsy of 9-1-1 is that they survive the unsurvivable so what's even the point now.'
@Thae_land also wrote: 'You cannot make a man die for 14 minutes and come back with no lasting effects just to kill him off a year later, like there's no way.'
Echoing that statement, @s1mplybor3d said: 'This is the show that everyone is immortal now you killed the fantasy land and i can't be apart of it anymore.'
@buddieism also said: 'It's mindblowing to me that tim somehow didn't realise or just didn't care that the main appeal of 911 is the found family dynamic being put in risky situations WITHOUT the shock value deaths that other procedurals go for… and that's just been shattered to pieces so now what.'
Others took a stand and said they would be boycotting 9-1-1, including @laurischattin, who declared: 'Everyone I know is dropping 9-1-1 forever.'
The character's shock death comes as the show was renewed for a ninth season.
9-1-1 co-lead Angela previously revealed her shock after learning about Bobby's fate. More Trending
She originally thought that another firefighter was going to die in the lab.
Angela told The Hollywood Reporter: 'It was incredulous to me that it was Bobby, so it was just very surprising.'
9-1-1 airs on ABC in the US and is available to stream on Disney Plus in the UK.

Billy Joel says 'I'm not dying' after cancelling tour due to brain condition

The music legend's Murrayfield Stadium gig was due to take place on June 6, but was cancelled along with the rest of Joel's tour due to his health. Billy Joel was forced to cancel his entire 2025 tour, having been diagnosed with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). The star was due to take the stage at Murrayfield Stadium on June 6, a gig which had previously been postponed to give him time to recover from surgery. The 'Uptown Girl' singer has been diagnosed with NPH, which is a condition that causes a build-up of fluid in the brain. The 76-year-old's team shared a statement with fans on May 23, apologising for the cancellation of his tour. ‌ It said that his brain condition"has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.' And the singer added: "I am sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience and thank you for understanding.' ‌ However, since then the star has been quiet, and was notably absent from the screening of his new documentary 'Billy Joel: And So It Goes' last Wednesday, June 4, at Tribeca Film Festival. Despite his absence, he relayed a message to the crowd through the film's co-director, Susan Lacy. 'We know Billy wishes he were here tonight, and he asked us to convey that to you all. "In fact, he said, 'Getting old sucks, but it's preferable to getting cremated,'' Lacy told the audience, reported Deadline. He also assured his fans that 'he will be back.' ‌ The two founders of Tribeca Film Festival- Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal- also acknowledged Joel's health condition and absence. Rosenthal said: 'Billy wanted to be with us tonight, but as you may have heard, he's dealing with a health issue and had to postpone his performances, including this one tonight. ‌ "We know you will join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.' De Niro added: 'He's our piano man, a wonderful, integral part of the heartbeat of our city. "Tonight, we get to see the man behind the music and behind the legend. You're in for a real treat.' ‌ According to outlet NJ, radio host Howard Stern recently had a conversation with Billy Joel, in which the star urged him to let fans know that he 'is not dying'. During a recent episode of The Howard Stern Show on Sirius XM, Stern discussed a recent dinner he had with Joel. Stern said: 'He does have issues. But he said to me- so I'm not saying anything crazy- 'Yeah, you can tell people: I'm not dying.' He wants people to know that. "He's got to deal with some medical stuff. But he was delightful. We had a great time with the wives. Billy's doing okay.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. Peter Kay's Car Share co-star Sian Gibson feared she'd 'ruined' his career

Sian Gibson had given up on showbusiness and was was living happily in Mold, north Wales with her family, when an email from the actress' old friend Peter Kay changed everything Sian Gibson had worked with Peter Kay more than once before winning the role of Kayleigh in Car Share, appearing in That Peter Kay Thing and three episodes of Phoenix Nights. But when she first saw a script for the much-loved BBC series, she had almost completely given up on acting. 'I was working in a call centre in Chester when Peter sent me a script, asking what I thought of it,' she told the Radio Times. ‌ Sian, who pops up on Sunday Brunch this weekend, has stayed busy since the success of Car Share. She's appeared in Death in Paradise, Taskmaster and most recently with Timothy Spall in the BBC's Death Valley. ‌ But she didn't think Car Share would restart her acting career – in fact she thought her performance might have wrecked Peter Kay's career as well: 'When I first saw it, I thought I was dreadful – I was worried that I had just ruined Peter Kay's career.' Sian's fears proved to be unfounded and Car Share went on to be one of the most-watched shows on iPlayer, winning multiple awards including Best Comedy at the 2016, 2018 and 2019 National Television Awards. Sian has known Peter for many years. They had bonded over a shared sense of humour while they were studying performing arts at the University of Salford. She says she was sure that he was the student from her year that was most likely to succeed. Peter would painstakingly edit together his home-made sketches into short films, Sian recalls, and had a perfectionist streak that viewers would soon see in Car Share. Songs on the show's fictitious Forever FM radio station often blossom into wildly imaginative 'pop video' fantasy sequences. ‌ Sian's path to fame was a little rockier than Peter's, she revealed. 'Things were great at the beginning of my career. Because I'm short, I always played younger parts. I was in my 20s and always played teenagers. Then I hit 30 and that doesn't work anymore. It all just dried up.' She recalled one disastrous audition that, for a while, looked like it would be the last one: "I remember going to the final audition of my acting career,' she recalled. ‌ Sian explained that the audition was for a small role in Emmerdale: "All I had to say was, 'You alright?' I sat in the waiting room getting nervous and I was that desperate for the job I couldn't even deliver the line – I was too hyper because I wanted it so much. That's when I realised it was over.' She married her husband Ian, a gas fitter, and in 2013 they had a daughter together. She wasn't too keen on her job in a banking call centre but it was steady work and she ended up staying there for several years: "Because the people were nice and it was next door to a lovely garden centre that did the best toasties,' she told the Independent. 'I'm still not entirely sure what they did.' When Peter sent her the Car Share script, she asked him why he hadn't chosen 'one of those really good actresses' such as Suranne Jones or Sheridan Smith, but he explained to her that what was most important to him was their easy chemistry, which came from a 20-year friendship.

The 'inappropriate' Peppa Pig episode that was banned in Australia twice

Peppa Pig's seemingly innocent adventures have sparked unexpected controversies over the years, from angering politicians to bans over inappropriate content. The porcine cartoon has most recently been in the headlines for the arrival of her baby sister, called Evie, with Mummy Pig's pregnancy announcement on Good Morning Britain in February leaving viewers baffled. But it's not the first time Peppa and her entourage have stirred up a media frenzy. Previously, a Spanish politician blamed the cartoon for the lack of women in the construction industry, an Italian politician demanded an episode featuring LGBTQ+ polar bears be banned, and some parents have labelled the cartoon icon as 'rude' and 'impatient'. In 2004, an episode titled Mister Skinnylegs was pulled off air in Australia for messaging deemed to be 'inappropriate' for audiences Down Under. The episode in question sees Peppa befriend a spider, after Daddy Pig tells her the arachnids are 'very very small' and 'can't hurt you'. The cartoon's titular character then proceeds to pick up the spider, letting him play with her doll's house and offering him tea. However, unlike in the UK, some spiders in Australia are far from harmless. The redback spider and the funnel-web spider are both venomous, and their bites can be fatal without administering antivenom. Australian spiders certainly aren't small, either — the huntsman's leg span can reach up to 30cm. The offending episode was banned from future broadcast by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) in 2012 for sending the 'inappropriate' message that spiders are friendly and not to be feared. But that's not the end of the story. In August 2017, the episode aired on children's channel Nick Jr in Australia, causing controversy all over again. A Sydney mother complained to Foxtel, an Australian pay TV service, arguing that the episode encouraged children to pick up and play with potentially dangerous spiders. Initially, the channel refused to pull the episode, saying at the time: 'The context of the way the spider is portrayed in the episode lessens any impact of scariness or danger; the spider does not look real, it has a smiley face and is shown in context of a show with other talking animals.' However, Nick Jr eventually relented and removed Mister Skinnylegs from its programme rotation. More Trending In Australia, children are taught from a young age about the dangers of spiders. Metro TV reporter Pierra Willix grew up in the country, and says: 'I remember being taught by my parents which spiders were harmless and which were dangerous. I was always told if you see a spider with a red back, that's bad!' She adds: 'I remember seeing charts and posters about which ones were deadly too.' And Australia's uncompromising approach to spider-related education appears to work. View More » According to Australian Museum, there have been no deaths from a confirmed spider bite in Australia since 1979, thanks to antivenoms for redback spiders and funnel web spiders being introduced in 1956 and 1980 respectively.
