Vizhinjam port completes a year of operations

Time of India11-07-2025
T'puram: Vizhinjam International Seaport on Friday completed a year since the first ship docked at the port. Since July 11 last year, the port has handled 393 ships and 8.3 lakh containers.
Minister V N Vasavan said that it is a landmark moment for the port.
"In this period, Vizhinjam achieved remarkable progress that amazed the world. The ship San Fernando arrived with containers on July 11, 2024, and commercial operations began in Dec 2024," the minister said.
In the past year, 392 ships arrived at Vizhinjam, including 23 ultra-large container ships like the MSC Irina, which is considered one of the largest container ships in the world.
Many of these ships, including the Irina, berthed in India for the first time, Vasavan added.
"Vizhinjam has become one of the rare ports globally to operate at full capacity within the initial months of commercial operation. It paved the way for India to demonstrate its capability to operate ports using advanced technologies like automation and AI," he added.
For the past four months, Vizhinjam ranked first among ports on India's southeastern coast.

The training of local women to become India's first female automated crane operators gained international attention, the minister said. Through social responsibility initiatives in health, education, and skill development, the project supported over 100,000 people.
As the first year is celebrated with pride, the second phase of construction, expected to cost over Rs 10,000 crores, will soon commence, Vasavan said. Vizhinjam is set to become a gateway to India's maritime dominance. The port is also gearing up to start EXIM cargo soon after the road connectivity is ready. The rail connectivity work will be completed in three years.

Cool comfort worth the extra 100, say passengers on board state's first AC local

Kolkata: Suburban commuters on board the maiden AC EMU Ranaghat-Sealdah train were ecstatic to experience the much-awaited service on the first day of the week. The feelings were mixed when it came to coughing up Rs 120 for the ride from Ranaghat to Sealdah. While some seemed sensitive about paying Rs 100 more for a journey that otherwise costs Rs 20 in non-AC rakes, others said the cool comfort and the superior travel justified the fare. A monthly ticket costs Rs 2,430. The one-way fare ranges from Rs 35 to Rs 120 depending on the distance travelled. The train was flagged off with much fanfare from Sealdah on Sunday. Commercial services started at 8.29 am on Monday. The inaugural commercial service was fairly crowded, with several passengers standing. But there was enough legroom, unlike the non-AC local trains. Ranaghat resident Dilip Ghosh, who works in Khadi Bhavan on CR Avenue, was smiling as he looked around the ICF-made rake, from the AC vent over the seat, noting the time as the automatic doors closed and the train chugged out of Ranaghat station. "This is like travelling on a metro train. We are covering 90 km in AC comfort and saving time as well. It would have taken around Rs 1,000 for the same ride on a hired car and taken me at least two-and-a-half hours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Rates Undo I shall reach Sealdah station at 10.10 am. "I shall try to catch the return train at 6.50 pm so I can be home by 8.45 pm (the Down train reaches Ranaghat at 8.32 pm)," he added. "I don't know...," said Balmiki Ray, a passenger who took the train from Khardah. "I would have paid Rs 5 for the same journey. Today I bought a ticket to Sealdah for Rs 60. The monthly passes will be a bit cheaper. But I wonder if it makes sense to increase my daily commuting expense 12 times for this comfort," the worker employed with a shop at Bagri Market said. Biplab Mondol, who boarded the train from Chakdah, echoed: "Today I paid Rs 105 because I was curious about the facility. The monthly ticket will cost me Rs 2,125. It's difficult to make a call when the daily commuting by non-AC train costs barely Rs 10," Mondol said. Arati Saha, a schoolteacher from Krishnanagar, insisted: "This is the ultimate comfort and safety. Two reserved coaches for ladies, that, too, air-conditioned! Only two rides may seem tokenistic, but this is certainly a significant start." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). KFC brings back potato wedges nationwide after five-year absence

KFC announced it will bring back potato wedges nationwide on August 18 after a five-year absence. The company said the decision follows strong customer demand and feedback during a limited test earlier this year. 'Wedge-lovers, we heard you, and we agree it's been five long years without wedges. But the wait is over,' said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, President, KFC US, in a written statement. 'This isn't just a nostalgic nod. It's an example of how we're turning feedback into action as we chart our Kentucky Fried Comeback , a bold, brand-wide rally to give people more reasons to fall in love with us all over again.' According to the company, the wings are prepared with a spicy marinade and double hand-breading in KFC's Extra Crispy flour, offering 'just the right amount of kick' and pairing with the 'crispy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside wedges.' Prices and participation for both menu items will vary by location, and the products will be available while supplies last. Live Events KFC removed potato wedges from its US menu in 2020. Earlier this year, the company reintroduced them for a two-week test in five Tampa, Florida, restaurants. 'Many factors go into selecting test markets, including representation of national QSR consumer trends for gauging customer feedback,' a KFC spokesperson said in an email to Southern Living at the time. The company said any nationwide rollout would depend on the success of the Tampa test. In March 2025, a KFC spokesperson said potato wedges were among the chain's most requested items. 'Fans have been demanding and petitioning for them to return for five years,' the spokesperson stated.
