Bengaluru Commuters Ride As 'Parcels' After Bike Taxi Ban

Indian 'jugaad' - a Hindi word that loosely translates as 'unconventional and innovative' - is a wonderful example of creative problem-solving, and don't let anybody ever tell you different.
Remember the story of the Mumbai auto driver who earns as much as Rs 8 lakh a month without driving his vehicle? How? Well, think less auto rickshaw and more bag storage area.
Now there's a new story, from Bengaluru, where app-based ride aggregator Rapido seems to have cleverly replaced the banned 'bike taxi' service with a 'bike parcel' service, creating a business offering commuters hassled by traffic jams and poor road infrastructure have happily jumped (pun intended) on.
How? By booking themselves as a 'parcel' for intra-city couriers driving two-wheelers.
The apparent improvisation comes after the Karnataka government acted on a High Court directive to suspend operations of two-wheeler taxi services operated by app-based aggregators like Rapido.
The court had ruled these 'bike taxis' to be illegal.

On Friday last, i.e., June 13, a division bench refused pleas from the companies behind the Uber, Ola, and Rapido apps to stay that ban, which is to remain in place till the state government notifies specific rules and guidelines for 'bike taxis' under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The court said it might be inclined to grant a stay if progress had been made towards framing those rules, but the state government dashed commuters' hopes by saying it had taken a policy decision to not frame such regulations. The court then set the next hearing for June 24.

In response to all of this, Bengaluru commuters have flooded social media with photographs and pithy comments about traffic in the state capital, a perennial and worsening issue.
"The bike taxi ban starts today in Karnataka...but the Product Owner at Rapido Bike app has already bypassed the law... can't book a ride? No worries - just parcel yourself to work... Call it: 'PaaS - Passenger as a Service'," an X user called Dhanvi said, with a screenshot of a 'bike parcel' booking.

Another X user, Amutha Bharathi, had the same idea.

Many also decried the court and government's move as a "bad decision", highlighting that a "permanently gridlocked Bengaluru needs all available public transport options, including bike taxis..."

Air India Crash Risks Fueling Up to 30% Jump in Insurance Premiums
(Bloomberg) -- Indian insurance policy sellers expect the cost of coverage for airlines to spike as much as 30% after the deadliest aviation crash in more than a decade. Sajja Praveen Chowdary, director at Indian broker Policybazaar, expects premiums for hull, war-risk, and liability coverage to increase by 10% to 30% in the next renewal cycle. Rohit Boda, group managing director at broker Group, predicts a rise of 10% to 25%. Premium hikes of that scale would be larger than previous crashes, given the enormity of the Air India accident, the brokers said. The crash killed 241 on board and dozens on the ground when it smashed into a residential area in the city of Ahmedabad on June 12. In the wake of a crash in South Korea last year that left all but two of the 181 passengers dead, premium increases were in the range of 15% to 18%, according to a UK-based reinsurer. Insurance claims for the Air India crash are expected in the realm of $475 million, including those for the aircraft's hull and engine as well as additional liability for loss of life, Bloomberg News reported earlier. Air India's fleet is insured for about $20 billion in total, with an annual premium near $30 million, according to data from Policybazaar. 'A catastrophe of this scale will contribute to hardening of global rates,' said Chowdary, director at Policybazaar for Business. Globally, crashes accounted for the majority of the $15 billion in aviation claims during the five year period ended 2024, according to a report by Allianz SE. Growth in air travel, fueled by Asia-Pacific and North America, was expected to drive premiums to more than $8 billion, according to the report. The insurance premium increase would be for all airlines, said people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified discussing private matters. They added that the impact will be redistributed to airlines across the globe. The premium increase is expected to be large, and further loss of aircraft could drive premiums to a record, the people said. BluPine Energy secures Rs 2,416 cr debt for its FDRE project
BluPine Energy on Monday said it has secured Rs 2,416 crore debt financing for its 150 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) Power Project in Aland, Karnataka. The project, undertaken by its wholly-owned subsidiary Solarcraft Power India 16 Pvt Ltd , is being developed under the SJVN 1,500 MW FDRE tender dated June 20, 2023, a company statement said. BluPine Energy Pvt Ltd (henceforth BluPine Energy), an Actis-backed leading renewable energy platform, today (Monday) announced the successful debt sanction of Rs 2,416 crore for its 150 MW FDRE Power Project in Aland, Karnataka, according to the statement. Standard Chartered acted as Mandated Lead Arranger, Lender, Sole Green Coordinator and Account Bank for the instant transaction. Sanjeev Bhatia, Chief Financial Officer, BluPine Energy, said, "This financial assistance facilitates us in building the need-of-hour FDRE projects- mix of solar, wind, and battery energy storage assets, which helps in overcoming intermittency of renewable energy sources and providing critical support to DISCOMs during peak demand hours."
