Birangana Season 1 Review: A roller-coaster ride in a world of trauma, horror and thrills

Time of India2 days ago
After Shikarpur and Dainee, Nirjhar Mitra returns to the darker corners of the Bengali crime thriller genre with Birangana. This time, the story centers on sub-inspector Chitra (Sandipta Sen), a sharp but emotionally scarred police officer. She begins to connect the dots between a series of eerily similar 'suicides' that she suspects are actually murders. As her instincts prove correct, Chitra is given greater responsibility – only to realise that the killer is not just clever but always one step ahead.
The show skillfully balances procedural elements with psychological depth. The pace is brisk, with most episodes ending on just the right note of tension. The musical score, featuring iconic tracks from the 2010s, adds unexpected emotional weight – at times delivering a nostalgic jolt. Rearranged songs from Jeet Gannguli and Anupam Roy's golden eras serve as thematic devices and mood-setters, enhancing the narrative rather than distracting from it. Viewers may even find themselves eagerly anticipating which song will play next.
Visually, Birangana makes a strong impression. It features generous use of drone shots, high-angle frames, meticulously designed sets, and stylized lighting. While some murder scenes verge on theatricality, this approach highlights the cruelty of the acts.
Sandipta Sen anchors the show's emotional core. As Chitra, she skillfully portrays the journey of a woman who starts off isolated and mistrusted at work, gradually earning the respect of her colleagues. One particularly memorable scene – where she's half-laughing, half-crying – lingers in the mind, capturing both the trauma she carries and the warmth of relief when someone finally stands by her. Her emotional moments hit the mark, though her action sequences could benefit from more refinement.
Niranjan Mondal as Chirayu commands attention, often stealing scenes with his volatile mix of menace and wit. A standout interrogation scene crackles with unspoken tension. Anirban Bhattacharjee's Boral embodies the 'bad cop' archetype effectively, while Prateek Dutta offers a grounded counterbalance – initially judging Chitra but gradually building trust and respect.
While the plot echoes elements from recent thrillers like Mardaani 2, Stree, and even Stree 2 – particularly in the villain's psychology and motives – Birangana keeps the suspense fresh through tight writing, emotional layering, and steady pacing. It's a stylish, emotionally anchored crime series that goes beyond shock value, inviting viewers to care deeply about its protagonists and their struggles – and you just might find yourself doing exactly that.

Maalik Box Office Day 4: Rajkummar Rao's Film Sees Lowest Single-Day Collection With Rs 1 Crore

Maalik Box Office Collection Day 4: Rajkummar Rao's Maalik, with Manushi Chhillar and Prosenjit Chatterjee, earned Rs 1 crore on Day 4, totaling Rs 15.59 crore. Maalik Box Office Collection Day 4: Rajkummar Rao's Maalik, which hit the big screens last Friday, started its journey on a promising note with a solid ensemble cast including Manushi Chhillar and Prosenjit Chatterjee. Over the weekend, the film held its ground well. But come Monday, the film hit its slowest day yet. As per early estimates by Sacnilk, Maalik added just Rs 1 crore to its box office tally on Day 4. With that, the film's total collection now stands a little above Rs 15 crore. While the dip isn't surprising given it was a Monday (and Mondays are notorious for pulling the brakes on most theatrical runs), it's still a crucial phase for the film to maintain momentum through the week. As per early estimates, Maalik collected Rs 1.34 crore on its fourth day at the box office — its lowest single-day earnings so far. But given it was a Monday, the dip in footfall isn't entirely unexpected. The film opened with Rs 3.75 crore on Friday. Over the weekend, it gained some momentum, bringing in Rs 5.25 crore each on Saturday and Sunday. With Monday's numbers in, Maalik's total collection now stands at Rs 15.59 crore. While the weekday drop was anticipated, the film will need steady numbers through the week. On Monday, Maalik recorded an overall 8.22 per cent Hindi occupancy in theatres. Despite the dip, Rajkummar Rao's political drama is faring better than Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyaan, which stars Vikrant Massey and marks Shanaya Kapoor's debut. That film has struggled to make a mark since day one. However, both Hindi releases are facing a tough challenge from the international juggernaut Superman, starring David Corenswet. The superhero film has already raked in over Rs 25 crore in India over its opening weekend. Directed by Pulkit, Maalik stars Rajkummar Rao in the lead role. The film also features Bengali cinema icon Prosenjit Chatterjee, former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, and Saurabh Sachdeva. The supporting cast includes Saurabh Shukla, Anshumaan Pushkar, Swanand Kirkire, Rajendra Gupta, and Baljinder Kaur. The News18 review of Maalik states, 'Maalik tries hard to be the next Mirzapur but ends up feeling like its distant cousin who was never invited to the family reunion. Pankaj Tripathi aka Kaleen Bhaiya's Mirzapur gave us a gritty storyline and iconic one-liners; however, Maalik serves as a recycled crime saga with no real punch. The violence feels random, the plot goes haywire post-interval, and the emotional beats just don't land. It's like watching someone try to recreate a gangster masterpiece with leftover scenes from Mirzapur." Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Trinamool vs Delhi Police Showdown: FIR, Counter FIR To Be Filed

Kolkata: Just hours after the Delhi Police issued a statement calling a video shared by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee "baseless and fabricated", the Trinamool Congress brought the migrant family seen in the video to the party office in Kolkata from Delhi to counter the Delhi Police directly. Seated between Trinamool MP Mausam Noor, MP Samirul Islam, Minister Firhad Hakim and leader Kunal Ghosh, the family from Malda who have been residing in New Delhi for over 25 years now levelled allegations against the Delhi Police of harassment, threat, torture and seeking ransom. "Four people in plain clothes came to my house and asked for my Aadhaar and asked where my husband was. I was called Bangladeshi, taken to Mangalam Hospital and slapped, they asked me to say Jai Sri Ram and kicked me in my stomach. They demanded Rs 25,000 and then next day the police picked us up and tortured us and made us sign many papers," said Sajnur Parveen, the woman seen in the CCTV shared by Mamata Banerjee. On July 27, the Chief Minister of West Bengal claimed "linguistic terror" being unleashed on Bengali Migrants in Delhi. Atrocious!! Terrible!! See how Delhi police brutally beat up a kid and his mother, members of a migrant family from Malda's Chanchal. See how even a child is not spared from the cruelty of violence in the regime of linguistic terror unleashed by BJP in the country against the... — Mamata Banerjee (@MamataOfficial) July 27, 2025 A day later, DCP East Abhishek Dhania said the police conducted an enquiry and after examining CCTV footage and interrogating the Malda family, they had told the police, that their relative with political links had asked them to record this video and share it with local media. #WATCH | Delhi: On West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's X post on a Bengali migrant family beaten by Delhi police, DCP East Delhi, Abhishek Dhania, says, "West Bengal CM posted on 'X' that a Bengali-speaking woman and her child were assaulted by the Delhi Police. Right after... — ANI (@ANI) July 28, 2025 "During the interrogation, she mentioned that her relative, who lives in the Malda district of West Bengal, is a political worker, and on his request, she made this baseless video and shared it with him. Later, he circulated the video in the local media... After a thorough investigation and inquiry, we have concluded that the entire video is baseless and fabricated. This video has been deliberately circulated on social media to tarnish the image of the Delhi Police," said DCP Dhania. The BJP in the meantime have filed a complaint against the West Bengal Chief Minister with Delhi Police Crime Branch for sharing a "fake and communally provocative" video seeking an FIR against her. BJP MP Soumendu Adhikari submitted his complaint on 29th July. The Trinamool Congress has said they will file a FIR against Delhi Police in Kolkata urging the Kolkata Police to investigate the allegations made by the Malda family against Delhi Police. "We will rehabilitate the family, provide fresh documents that have been seized by the police, even their mobile phones that were taken away. We will ensure they go back to Malda safely," added minister Firhad Hakim.

3 men held in Kolkata for extortion through dating app for LGBTQ+ community

Kolkata Police have arrested three men for their alleged role in an extortion racket involving a dating app commonly used by members of the LGBTQ+ community. The arrests came after a complainant approached the police on July 17, claiming that the victim was lured to a secluded location and coerced into transferring nearly Rs 97,000. The FIR, filed at Ballygunge police station under Sections 308(2) (extortion) and 3(5) (common intention in criminal acts) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleges that the complainant met a man who identified himself as 'Ashish' through the app. The two allegedly then met in front of K B Motors on Gurusaday Road. The victim was then allegedly taken to an abandoned hutment near Ballygunge Circular Road, where 'Ashish' and two others allegedly threatened to ruin the complainant's reputation. Under pressure, the victim allegedly transferred Rs 96,888 across multiple bank accounts as demanded. The complainant alleged that the accused had initially suggested meeting near Ballygunge railway station. Following the complaint, the police launched a search operation and, acting on specific intelligence, arrested one of the accused—Bijay Stephen Singh (31)—around 1:15 am. According to officers, further investigation is underway to trace the money trail and identify if the accused were involved in similar offences previously. Authorities are also examining whether the app was systematically misused to target individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
