Kane and Diaz lead Bayern to German Super Cup win over Stuttgart

BAYERN Munich secured a record 10th German Super Cup victory with a 2-1 win over Stuttgart on Saturday.
Harry Kane and Luis Diaz were the heroes for Bayern, each finding the net in a hard-fought contest.
The match marked the first edition of the competition renamed in honour of Franz Beckenbauer, who passed away earlier this year.
Kane opened the scoring in the 18th minute, finishing off a slick move involving Michael Olise.
The England captain now has 86 goals in 97 appearances for Bayern since joining last summer.
Stuttgart pushed hard for an equaliser in the second half, spurred on by a passionate home crowd.
Diaz doubled Bayern's lead in the 77th minute with a close-range header from Serge Gnabry's cross.
The Colombian celebrated by mimicking former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota's signature video-game tribute.
Jota tragically died in a car accident in July, making Diaz's gesture particularly poignant.
Stuttgart pulled one back through Jamie Leweling in stoppage time, but it proved too little too late.
Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich hailed the win as a statement of intent for the new season.
'We wanted to show everyone that we're here,' Kimmich told Sat 1.
The build-up to the match was overshadowed by transfer rumours surrounding Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade.
Bayern reportedly made multiple bids for the German forward, but Stuttgart stood firm.
On the pitch, Bayern kept Woltemade quiet for most of the game, limiting Stuttgart's attacking threat.
Olise was instrumental in Bayern's opener, delivering a perfectly weighted pass for Kane.
Stuttgart's defence failed to deal with the danger, allowing Kane to slot home with precision.
The hosts came close to equalising late on, with Woltemade heading over from a promising position.
Manuel Neuer produced a stunning save to deny Leweling before Diaz sealed the win.
Bayern will begin their Bundesliga campaign against RB Leipzig on Friday.

Soccer-Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio matches Shilton for most competitive appearances

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - FIFA Club World Cup - Fluminense Training - Sports Illustrated Stadium, Harrison, New Jersey, U.S. - July 7, 2025 Fluminense's Fabio during training REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach/File Photo (Reuters) -Fluminense's Fabio levelled Peter Shilton's longstanding record for most competitive appearances in men's soccer on Saturday when he walked out onto the pitch for the 1,390th time in his team's 2-1 win over Fortaleza in Brazil's Serie A. In a professional career spanning 28 years, goalkeeper Fabio, 44, has played senior games for Uniao Bandeirante (30), Vasco da Gama (150), Cruzeiro (976) and Fluminense (234). The total, based on research by Fluminense, has been corroborated by Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte. "God gave me this gift," Fabio told Globo when asked about the record. "I have to thank everyone who has been part of my life - my father, mother, sisters, friends, my wife... I try to be a good person. The important thing is to help my teammates. I am grateful, but without God nothing would be possible. "These are difficult games and we are facing very strong teams. We are always striving to achieve our goals, which are the titles." Fabio will move past Shilton on Tuesday if he plays when Fluminense host Colombian side America de Cali in the second leg of their Copa Sudamericana round of 16 tie. He is unlikely to stop there, however, given that he is a regular starter for Fluminense. Former England goalkeeper Shilton acknowledged in 2023 that Fabio was inching closer towards breaking his record and said he would be the first to congratulate the Brazilian if he were to do so. Shilton, who played between 1966 and 1997, is acknowledged as the record holder for the most competitive men's professional games, though the total is disputed. Guinness World Records and a number of statistics websites say the tally is 1,390 but Shilton himself, on his X feed, gives it as 1,387. The discrepancy comes from Guinness including 16 unofficial games that Shilton does not include, while he includes 13 games he played for England's Under-23s team that normally are not counted. Kane, Diaz score as Bayern outclass Stuttgart to lift German Supercup

STUTTGART, Germany: Champions Bayern Munich eased past VfB Stuttgart 2-1 on Saturday thanks to goals from Harry Kane and new signing Luis Diaz to lift the German Supercup. The Bavarians were sharper throughout and their keeper and man-of-the-match Manuel Neuer was in fine form less than a week before the Bundesliga season starts. "I think about the team and to play as best as possible in order to be successful," Neuer said. "We did that today. It's nice to be man of the match but it's always about the team. "We did it well. We won all the matches in pre-season and we want to carry this into the Bundesliga season next week." With all eyes on Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade who Bayern are keen to sign, last season's Bundesliga top scorer Kane pounced on a defensive error by Luca Jaquez to give Bayern an 18th-minute lead. German Cup winners Stuttgart went in search of a quick equaliser, and Woltemade went close, only for his point-blank shot to be saved by Neuer. The 39-year-old keeper again came to the rescue in the 75th when he showed good reflexes to palm away a deflected shot wide before Colombia international Diaz scored with his first effort on goal, heading in a Serge Gnabry cross 13 minutes from time. Stuttgart grabbed a stoppage-time consolation through Jamie Leweling's close-range header. — Reuters
