Tender issued for widening of accident-prone Nuh-Alwar highway to 4 lanes
The current single-lane road has created traffic issues, reportedly resulting in approximately 3,000 deaths due to road accidents over the past 12 years. The project of four-laning is estimated to cost Rs 310.44 crore. To be executed under the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode, it includes strengthening and improving a 6.84-km section of the existing road in Malab and Bhadas villages in Nuh district, Haryana.
The tender, issued by the superintending engineer and regional officer of the MoRTH in Jaipur, invites bids from qualified contractors. The completion period is 24 months, followed by a five-year maintenance period after the construction is complete. Bids can be submitted online via the Central Public Procurement Portal (CPPP) and Bill Information and Management System (BIMS) from July 24 to September 8, with the bid opening scheduled for September 9.
The development comes after the Union government in April approved the project to convert the single-lane stretch into a four-lane road.
On November 3, 2008, then Union minister S Jaipal Reddy laid the foundation for the four-lane road project. However, the project has remained in limbo.
In a post on X, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in April said, 'This national highway section connects Gurugram, Sohna, and Nuh industrial areas. Due to the movement of heavy vehicles from Rajasthan to northern states, there is heavy traffic on this route. Making this section four-lane will reduce heavy traffic and provide better connectivity, which will promote economic development in this area.'
Nuh Congress MLA Aftab Ahmed had earlier claimed it was the Manmohan Singh government that initiated works to convert the route into a national highway in 2014. 'But the BJP governments at the Centre and the state dropped this four-laning project in 2018, saying that the upcoming Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will take care of the needs of the people,' he had said.
The Congress raised the issue repeatedly in the Haryana Assembly, Ahmed said, adding that he wrote to the ministry in December 2024 about the stretch between Nuh and the Rajasthan border via Ferozepur Jhirka.

India outpaces Japan in solar energy generation, becomes 3rd-largest producer
India has outpaced Japan in solar energy generation, producing 1,08,494 GWh, making it the world's third-largest after China and the US, Union new and renewable energy minister Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday. India was on track to fulfil its commitments at COP26 held in Glasgow. ( 'India has outpaced Japan in solar energy generation — producing 1,08,494 GWh compared to Japan's 96,459 GWh — and is now the world's third-largest solar power producer. Thanks to the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, India is leading the way in the global clean energy revolution,' Joshi said on X. According to the International Energy Agency's 2024 data, China led in solar PV capacity additions. It added 260 GW in 2023, close to triple the previous year. China's 14th Five-Year Plan for Renewable Energy in 2022 set ambitious targets for deployment, which are expected to drive further capacity growth. The US included generous new funding for solar PV in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in 2022. PV additions in the US increased in 2023 by 70%, reaching a record 32 GW. India installed 12 GW of solar PV in 2023, one-third below the 2022 growth. Deployment is expected to ramp up significantly in 2024 as supply-chain challenges ease and expanded auction volumes translate into a project pipeline. Brazil added 15 GW of solar PV capacity in 2023, close to 30% more than in the previous year. India, which achieved one of its nationally determined contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement five years in advance, has crossed its target of installing 50% of its power capacity from non-fossil sources. India's updated NDCs under the agreement submitted in August 2022 said the country aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP to 45% by 2030 from the 2005 level. India seeks to increase the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy resources to 50% of its installed power generation capacity by 2030 and create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through additional forest and tree cover by 2030. As of June 30, India's total energy capacity was 484.8 GW, with 242.04 GW (49.92%) from thermal/coal, 8.78 GW (1.81%) from nuclear, and 234.00 GW (48.27%) from renewable sources. India was on track to fulfil its commitments at COP26 in Glasgow. At COP26, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India will increase its non-fossil fuel energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030 and fulfil 50% of its energy requirements from renewable energy sources by 2030. Modi spoke about reducing India's total projected carbon emissions by one billion tonnes, reducing the carbon intensity of its economy by 45% by 2030, and achieving the target of net zero emissions by 2070.

Building Pune: Pune Metro to expedite work on extended route from PCMC to Nigdi
Pune Metro rail authorities are expediting the completion of the extended segment of the Phase One route from PCMC station to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi, with the goal of making it operational six months ahead of schedule. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the construction of this 4.413 km-long extended stretch in March last year, but the actual work began only five months later. 'The construction of the extension stretch from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi began in August last year, and the civil work is going in full swing. The deadline for completing work on the stretch is 36 months from the start of actual work, but we are planning to complete it in 30 months,' said Hemant Sonawane, Executive Director, Pune Metro Rail. Sonawane said the administrative processes for laying overhead cables on the track and the mechanical work of installing escalators and lifts have begun even before the completion of civil work. 'We don't want to waste time on completing the administrative process for the works related to the stretch, so it has been done well in advance,' said Sonawane. The route from PCMC to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi is elevated and has three stations at Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi. The estimated cost of the extended route is Rs 1,048.22 crore, which covers expenses on development of intermodal integration, stations, pedestrian bridge, system and tracks, environment impact assessment, design, depot and parking on the route. The 17.4 km Metro route from Swargate to PCMC has been made operational and has received positive response from the public. This route has been extended from PCMC to Nigdi on one end and Swargate to Katraj on the other end. However, the construction on the extended underground route of 5.5 km from Swargate to Katraj is yet to start even though it is expected to be completed by February 2029 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,954.53 crore. Additionally, the second route, measuring 15.7 km from Vanaz to Ramwadi, is also fully operational. Last month, the Central Government approved its extension on both ends — connecting Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi. These two extended elevated corridors will span 12.75 km and include 13 stations, linking fast-developing suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The project is scheduled for completion within four years at an estimated cost of Rs 3636.24 crore. Meanwhile, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is developing the Metro Line-3, which will span 23 km from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar District Court. This line is expected to start operations by March 2026. Ajay Jadhav is an Assistant Editor with The Indian Express, Pune.
