Duo to appear in court in theft of water meters case
Two men, aged 25 and 27, were arrested for the possession of suspected stolen water meters on the weekend in Akasia.
The duo is expected to appear before the Pretoria North Magistrates' Court on July 22.
According to police, theft of water meters is being highlighted as part of a growing trend of infrastructure-related crimes plaguing the north of Pretoria.
Pretoria North police spokesperson, Sergeant Tumisang Moloto, said the arrest took place on July 19, during a routine patrol by sector policing members along Willem Cruywagen Street.
Moloto said the officers spotted two men carrying large bags.
'A stop-and-search was immediately conducted. Upon searching the bags, police discovered multiple water meters and tools believed to be used to dismantle the infrastructure.
'When questioned, the suspects failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the items in their possession,' he said.
Police arrested the duo on the spot for possession of suspected stolen property.
Moloto said the case has since been handed over to investigators, and further charges could follow if the suspects are linked to any other infrastructure-related crimes in the area.
Pretoria North police said the theft of water meters has become a common issue in the region, contributing to unnecessary service disruptions.
Acting station commander Lieutenant Colonel Theunis Smit welcomed the arrest and praised the vigilance of the officers involved in the operation.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining visibility and strong sector policing to curb the ongoing theft of essential public infrastructure.
He further appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially individuals seen tampering with public infrastructure such as fire hydrants, water meters or electrical boxes.
The suspects are currently being held at the Pretoria North police station, pending their formal appearance in court.
Police investigations are ongoing, and the authorities are working to determine whether the recovered water meters were reported stolen.

Six-year-old dies in Mamelodi shack fire
A six-year-old child tragically lost their life in a shack fire in Mamelodi East Extension 6 on Sunday night, 27 July 2025. Tshwane firefighters responded swiftly to the blaze, managing to contain the flames and prevent further destruction, while six other residents—one of whom sustained minor burn injuries—escaped with their lives. The child was then transported by ambulance to Stanza Bopape Clinic for further medical observation. The South African Police Service and other roleplayers such as community leaders were also on the scene, and they assisted with incident management. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Tshwane Emergency Services Department urges communities to remain vigilant and be cautious during winter to prevent and eliminate incidents of this nature that can have a disastrous effect on families and the community. Mnguni advised resident to remain calm, speak clearly, know where you are to give the correct address, and give your correct contact number so that the operator can phone you back, should they need to do so. Third burned female body found in east, police investigate
Police in Silverton have launched a murder investigation, following the discovery of three burned female bodies found between June and July along the railway line between Waltloo and Denneboom train stations. According to provincial police spokesperson, Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, the bodies were found at the same location on separate dates over the past month. 'The police have opened three cases of murder following the discovery of burned female bodies between June and July,' said Sibeko. She confirmed the most recent discovery was made on Sunday, July 27. 'The details surrounding the incidents remain unclear, and investigations are ongoing,' she said. She added that in all three cases, members of the public alerted police after coming across the bodies. It is reported that the murders share a similar modus operandi, but the motive behind the killings remains unknown at this stage. Lerato Kganyago speaks out after being followed by unknown men
Lerato said she laid a trap at a restaurant to catch the 'thugs'. Media personality Lerato Kganyago says she has allegedly been followed by 'thugs' for some time, adding that a police officer allegedly failed to intervene when she recently confronted one of the suspects. The Metro FM presenter said she had long been aware that she was being followed until she set a trap and managed to confront one of them. 'I bravely got out of the car by myself, which I don't advise, and confronted one of them… standing next to a uniformed police officer, who said nothing while this confrontation happened, and only walked away when they realised I had been recording all of them… I only did this because I knew I had 'invisible' security around me… They are thugs!' she added.
