VW celebrates 50 years of Polo with new Polo Edition 50
Volkswagen is celebrating five decades of the Polo hatchback with the launch of the new Polo Edition 50.
Based on the Polo Style derivative, this celebratory model is enhanced with an extensive range of special equipment including 16" 'Coventry' alloy wheels, dark-tinted rear windows and a unique 3D badge on the B-pillar with the lettering '50".
Inside the cabin you will find 'Edition 50" lettering on the front sill panel mouldings and a '50" on the lower steering wheel trim as well as on the front passenger side dashboard.
Volkswagen has also upped the standard features ante with the addition of chrome-look pedals, a black headliner, ambient lighting, heated front sport seats, multifunction leather steering wheel, reverse camera, a Discover Media infotainment system with streaming and internet capability, Driving profile selection and a Park and Comfort assist package. The standard chrome package adds shine to the electric mirrors, switches and vents.
Available as a cost option, the Plus package adds extra niceties including a large tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof, two-zone automatic air conditioner with extended air filter and the keyless access, keyless locking and starting system with Safelock functionality.

Powering the Polo Edition 50 is a 1.0 l three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 70kW and 175Nm of torque. It can be meshed to a five-speed manual or seven-speed DSG transmission.
There's also a more potent version of the same engine tuned to deliver 85kW/200Nm. The latter is paired exclusively to the seven-speed DSG gearbox.
The new Volkswagen Polo Edition 50 will only be available in European and UK markets.

Volkswagen recalls Polo and Taigo models bought in 2022 and 2024
The recall stems from a defect that affects the front passenger airbag module. Volkswagen Group South Africa has notified the National Consumer Commission (NCC) that it is recalling Polo and Taigo vehicles bought in 2022 and 2024. The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 protects consumers from hazards and ensures their well-being and safety by governing product recalls. The NCC can order a recall if a product is deemed unsafe or poses a potential risk to the public. What is wrong with the cars? The cars are being recalled because of a faulty part in the gas generators of the front passenger airbag module. 'In the event of an accident with deployment of the front airbag, there may be a reduced protective effect by the front passenger airbag and an increased risk of injury to the passenger. 'Furthermore, the gas generator housing may burst, or components of the gas generator housing may come loose and cause serious or deadly injuries to vehicle occupants,' said the NCC. VW told NCC that there are 142 Polo and eight Taigo cars affected. 141 Polo cars were made available for sale nationally from 20 December 2022. One Polo and eight Taigo cars were made available for sale from 29 January 2024. Affected consumers are advised to take the following steps: 1. Deactivate the front passenger airbag. 2. Refrain from using the front passenger seat. 3. Submit vehicle to any VWSA-approved dealer for a check and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components. The first recall of Polo This is not the first recall of Polo models. Mid-May Polo Sedans, sold nationally from 2 April 2025, were part of a recall of other cars. VW informed NCC that the latch plates for the rear seatbelt were produced with insufficient hardness. Therefore, in the event of powerful deceleration (accident or hard braking), 'there may be a reduced retention or protective effect and related increased risk of injury.' There are 905 Polos with this issue. Those who purchased the car during the period must contact an approved Volkswagen dealer for a check and, if necessary, replacement of the affected components. Underneath, the SUV will use the same MQB-A0 platform as the Polo and T-Cross. That means it will likely share some design elements and interior tech, including Volkswagen's latest infotainment systems and digital driver displays. In terms of engines, the 1l, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol unit is expected to be the main option. Final pricing and full specifications will only be announced closer to the model's launch in 2027, but the local production and platform-sharing suggest Volkswagen is aiming for a competitive price point to appeal to a wide range of buyers.
