Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has signed with Villarreal CF. He faces serious criminal charges in the UK, including rape and sexual assault, which he denies.
Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has officially signed with Villarreal CF, the Spanish club confirmed on Thursday.
The announcement comes just weeks after Partey was charged in the UK with multiple serious criminal offences.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian international, who left Arsenal at the end of June following the expiration of his contract, is currently facing five counts of rape involving two women, and one count of sexual assault involving a third woman. The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2022, during Partey's tenure as an Arsenal player.
Partey appeared in a London court on August 5 and was granted conditional bail. He has denied all allegations. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 2 at the Old Bailey, one of the UK's most prominent criminal courts.
He was officially charged on July 4, four days after departing the Premier League club.
'The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence."
'The player strongly proclaims his innocence and denies all the accusations made against him. The club awaits the judiciary's decision, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts alleged against him."
While financial terms were not disclosed, Partey joins Villarreal as they prepare for a return to Champions League football, having finished fifth in La Liga last season.
Career Overview
Partey joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in October 2020 for a reported £45 million ($60 million). A regular starter under Mikel Arteta, he made 52 appearances for the club last season, scoring four goals. Across all competitions, he featured 167 times for the Gunners, netting nine goals.
Internationally, Partey has earned 51 caps for Ghana, representing the Black Stars at major tournaments including the Africa Cup of Nations and FIFA World Cup.

Figo Syndai scored for Shillong Lajong. The Highlanders secured their second victory in Group E and have six points while Shillong Lajong have finished their group stage campaign also with six points from three matches. A point from the last match for NorthEast United will ensure that they qualify for the quarterfinals as clear group winners. The Spanish gaffer brought in goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh, new signing Jose Manuel Nunez Martin, Asheer Akhtar, Lalrinzuala, Redeem Tlang and Buanthanglun Samte while the home side brought in Kitboklang Khyriem, Saveme Tariang, Damaitphang Lyngdoh, Rudra Ved and Sheen Stevenson Sohktung. Star striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie continued his terrific goal scoring form in India, giving the lead for the defending champions the lead in just the fifth minute of the game. The Moroccan found space to move between the central defenders as new signing, Jose Manuel Nunez Martin slipped in a perfect ball for the striker to calmly finish past the on rushing Lajong goalkeeper Siwel Rymbai for his fourth goal of the tournament. The match settled down after the frantic start as both teams then tried to dictate the pace of the game. NorthEast could have doubled the lead mid way into the half after Jithin M.S found Ajaraie inside the box with a low cross from the right wing. The striker was slow this time to reach the ball as he could not find a clean connection to divert the ball into the net. The game came back to life in the final ten minutes, with Shillong Lajong equalising in the 81st minute through substitute Figo Syndai. Left back Saveme Tariang found Figo at the far post with a curling cross and the forward got ahead of Buanthanglun Samte and found the target with a bullet header as Gurmeet Singh was rooted to his spot.

Goa to emerge as Asia's leading beach sports hub: Khaunte

Porvorim: Tourism minister Rohan Khaunte assured the House that the state will position itself as Asia's premier destination for beach and coastal sports tourism, following the success of international events already hosted in the state. Responding to a calling attention motion moved by Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar, Khaunte highlighted Goa's proven track record in delivering world-class sporting experiences. The state successfully hosted prestigious events, including the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon, Rainforest Challenge, World Table Tennis Star Contender, and Beach Volleyball World Tour – Goa Challenge. 'These events are not just competitions; they stimulate high-value tourism, generate employment, benefit allied sectors, and strengthen Brand Goa on the global map,' Khaunte stated in his reply. He cited the Spanish town of Tarifa as an inspiration. Tarifa successfully repositioned itself as the 'wind capital of Europe' through strategic promotion of kitesurfing and windsurfing, showing how targeted positioning can attract quality tourists, extend tourist seasons, and create a thriving sports economy. Khaunte announced plans to develop flagship sailing and regatta events, establish beach sports infrastructure at identified locations, and partner with national and international sporting bodies for recurring events. The initiative will involve coordinated efforts between the department of tourism, department of sports, and other line departments to align infrastructure development, event promotion, and talent development, Khaunte said.
