Mark Hamill gets candid about new roles beyond 'Star Wars'

The South African16 hours ago

Mark Hamill, the legendary actor best known for his iconic role as Luke Skywalker, is back—but not in a galaxy far, far away.
Instead, he stars in the poignant new film, The Life of Chuck , based on a Stephen King novella.
The movie explores the life of an ordinary man and the small moments that shape his universe. Hamill recently shared insights about this fresh chapter in his career.
Hamill's journey with Star Wars is legendary, he admits he hasn't watched the original films since their release, preferring to focus on his current work, according to Today.
'I wanted to move on, but as my co-star Carrie Fisher once told me, 'Get over yourself. You're Luke Skywalker. Embrace it,' he said with a smile.
This advice helped him reconcile with his past and embrace the legacy while stepping into new roles.
The Life of Chuck marks a significant departure from Hamill's sci-fi roots. He plays a hard-drinking grandfather, a role he describes as 'indescribable' and deeply moving.
Hamill encourages viewers to experience the film without preconceived notions, saying, 'Go unprepared, don't read reviews. Discover it for yourself.'
The film touches on Stephen King's signature apocalyptic themes but centres more on human connection and reflection.
Hamill's voice acting career also deserves a mention. After Star Wars , he found a new creative outlet as the voice of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series for over three decades.
He praises the voiceover community for its warmth and inclusivity. 'Voiceover saved my life,' he said. 'You get to play a huge range of characters without being judged by your looks.'
This versatility has kept him busy and creatively fulfilled.
The Life of Chuck opens in cinemas nationwide from 13 June. Tickets are priced around R150, a small price for a film that promises to touch hearts and spark reflection.
Mark Hamill's evolution from a space-faring hero to a storyteller of human experience is a reminder that great actors grow with their craft. Sometimes, the most extraordinary stories come from ordinary lives.

Kerishnie Naiker recalls freak accident that left her in a wheelchair

Former Miss SA Kerishnie Naiker has reflected on the first anniversary since a freak accident that left her temporarily wheelchair bound after dislocating both ankles. The 51-year-old beauty queen suffered a serious fall after bumping into a tourist at Cape Point in May last year. After undergoing intensive rehabilitation, she slowly regained mobility, but with limitations. In 1997, Kerishnie became the first South African of Indian descent to win Miss SA. In an Instagram post over the weekend, Kerishnie Naiker reflected on a year of intense rehabilitation since her horror accident at a Cape tourist destination last year. Sharing footage of her time in hospital, she shared: 'Adaptability is an art and an advantage. The focus has not once been on the negligent, selfie-addicted tourist, but rather on being solution-driven and healing. Earlier this month, Kerishnie claimed she had '28% sports ability' and also revealed she experienced nerve damage in her toes. According to Kerishnie Naiker, she suffered a serious fall last year after bumping into a tourist on a steep flight of stairs. She shared: 'I was accidentally tripped by a tourist while she was taking photographs. While on the stairs from the lighthouse at Cape Point, she walked backward into me, tripping me down two steps. She tried to get the lighthouse in focus and took one step too far'. The beauty queen dislocated both her ankles and had to undergo an intensive rehabilitation programme. Kerishnie Naiker has shared a health update after a freak accident. Images via Instagram: @kerishnie_naiker In light of the accident, Kerishnie Naiker has used her platform to share the lessons she learned from the experience. She shared: 'I feel it imperative to use this platform to reaffirm that we: 'Do not take photos at the peril of others or ourselves 'Are observant, cognizant of our surroundings, and situationally aware 'Savour every moment and take it all in without having to witness it all through a lens 'Are mindful, kind, and not oblivious of the well-being of others.' She added, 'Too many are dying while taking selfies and recording reels, and others are getting injured and killed by their negligence.' Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton expecting second child

Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton are thrilled to announce they are expecting their second child. The couple shared this joyous news exclusively with Vogue on 7 June, accompanied by a stunning maternity photoshoot. The announcement came just before the UK premiere of Tom's latest film, The Life of Chuck , held at the SXSW festival in London, according to People. Zawe proudly displayed her growing bump on the red carpet, wearing the elegant Emilia Wickstead gown paired with a matching cape. Tom complemented her look in a sharp grey suit. Zawe expressed her gratitude for the support she received during this 'sensitive red carpet dressing moment,'. 'I feel really lucky to be working with someone that I know and who's been such a champion of me at this sensitive red carpet dressing moment. I feel like I'll be very held on an evening, whereas as an expectant mother you can feel a little bit exposed'. TOM HIDDLESTON AND ZAWE'S LOVE STORY The couple's love story began in 2019 when they met while starring in the West End production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal . They later reprised their roles on Broadway. Their relationship blossomed quietly until they announced their engagement in 2022. That same year, they welcomed their first child in October, although they have kept the baby's name and gender private. Zawe shared fond memories of her friendship with Emilia Wickstead. 'We met years ago at the British Fashion Awards when she dressed me, and we attended together. It was the most fabulous night and instantly felt like kindred spirits. We aligned so much on fashion and womanhood, and I've always loved her designs. They embody a seamless blend of classic and contemporary, and she's also just an incredible craftsperson. You feel the level of detail that goes into every piece when you wear them'. Emilia herself described dressing Zawe for the maternity shoot as a 'full-circle moment.' She remembered how Zawe had worn one of her gowns during her previous pregnancy, keeping the news under wraps at the time. As the family prepares to welcome their newest member, fans worldwide eagerly await more updates. Tom once shared in an interview, 'I'm very happy,' a simple yet heartfelt expression that resonates deeply now as their family grows. Congratulations to Tom and Zawe on this wonderful new chapter.
