Landslide cuts off Gua Musang-Kuala Krai road, causes two-kilometre traffic jam
GUA MUSANG, May 21 — A landslide at KM27 of Jalan Gua Musang-Kuala Krai, near Gua Sejuk, has cut off both directions of the road, causing a two-kilometre traffic jam last night.
Gua Musang police chief Supt Sik Choon Foo said the incident occurred around 7.30 pm and brought traffic to a complete standstill.
He said the landslide was likely triggered by heavy rain earlier in the day, though no casualties or damage to vehicles were reported.
'The Public Works Department (JKR) has alerted the Central Spine Road (LTU) project team for further action,' he told Bernama.
He added that traffic police and a mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit have been deployed to ensure public safety at the scene.
'The road will reopen once debris is cleared. Road users are advised to remain patient and comply with instructions from the authorities, as no alternative routes are currently available,' he said. — Bernama

Cautious Trading Ahead For Rubber Market Amid Supply Concerns
By Siti Noor Afera Abu KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- The local rubber market is likely to remain on a downtrend next week as businesses are still cautious about the global market outlook, according to the Malaysian Rubber Glove Manufacturers Association (MARGMA). The association said prices will likely be affected by the supply shortages due to the weather conditions, the strength of the ringgit, crude oil price movements, and the unpredictable nature of the United States-China trade relations and China's economic policies. 'These will contribute to a volatile and uncertain market for rubber in the coming week,' MARGMA told Bernama. Industry expert Denis Low also echoed this view, noting that weather-driven supply disruptions could further add to market volatility. For the week just ended, the Kuala Lumpur rubber market ended on a downtrend this week, weighed down by declines in regional rubber futures markets, weaker benchmark crude oil prices and a stronger ringgit against the US dollar. On a week-to-week basis, the Malaysian Rubber Board's reference price for Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 (SMR 20) fell by 42 sen to 698.5 sen per kilogramme (kg), while latex in bulk decreased by 6.5 sen to 620.5 sen per kg. The Kuala Lumpur rubber market will be closed on June 2, 2025 (Monday) in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim's official birthday and will commence operations on Tuesday. -- BERNAMA

Rubber Market Ends Slightly Higher
KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian rubber market ended slightly higher, supported by gains in crude oil prices. A dealer said that further gains were capped by a mixed performance in the regional rubber futures markets. She said the Japanese rubber futures traded within a thin range on Thursday as investors weighed a prolonged price war in China's vehicle market against wet weather in key production areas.

RM7 million allocated for drought mitigation in Malaysia's rice granaries
Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Arthur said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops. Bagan Serai: The government has allocated RM7 million for infrastructure upgrades to minimise drought impact on key rice production areas of Malaysia. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops. 'It is mainly to ensure that the water channels are functioning and can deliver water to the paddy plots, even if the water volume is slightly lower than usual. 'This is also one of our ways to minimise the potential negative effects on farmers' income, especially during drought seasons,' he said after officiating the 2025 Perak State-Level Agricultural Machinery and Equipment handover ceremony at Dewan Dato' Zainal Abidin Zin, here, today. Yesterday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued a statement, indicating that six areas in Peninsular Malaysia are now at Level 1 (alert) for three consecutive days, due to ongoing hot weather. The affected areas include Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, and Perak Tengah in Perak, Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan, and Bandar Baharu in Kedah. In a separate matter, Arthur said that his ministry will strengthen collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to combat cattle smuggling activities from Thailand, which are believed to threaten the country's food security. He said enforcement actions against individuals involved in unethical activities are under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments. 'Therefore, a comprehensive engagement session between state and federal governments is essential, to harmonise laws and prevent conflicts which could undermine the nation's food biosecurity,' he said. He added that one of the main factors contributing to smuggling activities, particularly during festive seasons, is the high demand for beef, coupled with the sector's self-sufficiency level (SSL) still falling short of the targeted benchmark. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
