Tony Grossi appreciates that Shedeur Sanders didn't call him out from the podium

NBC Sportsa day ago
After a stellar preseason debut for the Browns, rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders gave reporter Tony Grossi an earful, in a way that seemed largely playful.
Said Shedeur to Grossi, among other things: 'Tony, I be hoping you got something positive to say about me. You only say negative stuff about me. And I'm like, 'I ain't do nothing to you.''
On Monday, Grossi addressed the situation on ESPN Cleveland.
'One thing to note was that I initiated the conversation,' Grossi said, via Reice Shipley of AwfulAnnouncing.com. 'He left the podium to walk to the locker room and I called his name to ask him another question. And that's when he discussed what was on his mind. I was a little surprised he went into that because as I said, it was inaudible but I said, 'Hey, this is your night man. This is a big night for you, have fun.' But I appreciated the fact that he did not say what was on his mind from the podium, which other quarterbacks have done with me, which is very uncomfortable.'
While Grossi appreciated that the discussion happened away from a formal press conference, he didn't like that it was recorded.
'I didn't appreciate the fact that this interaction was filmed without my knowledge,' Grossi said. 'It turns out, it was his brother, who is documenting everything from his rookie season. That's fine, just now that I'm aware of it, I'll be a little more careful and everything. But everybody that saw the video, it was good natured. I don't know what caused us to laugh, I really can't recall that conversation precisely. But we went on good terms.
'We had a couple other words in the locker room too. But I was a little surprised that, on his big night, and it was a big night for him with all of the circumstances, that he would raise this. That's why I thought he was joking. It shouldn't have been that big of a deal on his mind after his big night. Anyways, all is good. We saw each other today at practice and we move on.'
And that's the key. They've moved on. Sanders made his point, Grossi made his — and everyone is now on notice that, if you're near Shedeur at any point this year, anything you say can and will be recorded.

Cleveland Browns reveal preseason starting QB plans for Dillon Gabriel, Shedeur Sanders

One of the driving storylines in the NFL preseason so far has had to do with the Cleveland Browns and their quarterback situation. After drafting both Oregon Ducks' star Dillon Gabriel and Colorado Buffaloes star Shedeur Sanders, there has been some notable intrigue into what the Browns plan to do this year, especially with guys like Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett in the room as well. In the first week of the preseason, Sanders got a jump on the QB competition, while Gabriel was sidelined with a hamstring issue. In a win over the Carolina Panthers, Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdown passes. He also added 19 yards on the ground before being replaced in the third quarter by newly signed Tyler Huntley. Going into Week 2 of the preseason, though, the Browns are looking to get Gabriel into the mix as the starter, assuming he is healthy. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the plan is for Gabriel to start the game on Saturday against the Philadelphia Eagles if he is healthy enough to play. If not, then Sanders will get the start once again. Asked if Sanders would get the start if Kenny Pickett and Gabriel are unable to due their hamstring issues, Stefanski said, 'Yeah, I guess if those guys could not play, yes, and we're working through that. The Browns plan to continue to monitor Gabriel's status throughout the week as they prepare for the game against Philadelphia, hoping that he can get healthy enough to play this weekend. If he is able to go, the Ducks' former QB will have a chance to show what he's capable of and potentially move ahead in the QB competition before the season begins next month. Dillon Gabriel remains ahead of Shedeur Sanders on Browns' latest depth chart

The Cleveland Browns released their second depth chart of the summer, with it remaining unchanged from a week ago despite Shedeur Sanders' impressive performance in their preseason opener. That leaves former Oregon Duck Dillon Gabriel sitting in the No. 3 spot, behind former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco and 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett. Neither played in the Browns' first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, with Pickett and Gabriel dealing with injuries. That left Sanders as the starter, who completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdown passes. He also added 19 yards on the ground before being replaced in the third quarter by newly signed Tyler Huntley. Huntley was added to the roster as an extra arm amid the injuries to Gabriel and Pickett. Despite his standout effort that made national headlines, Sanders remains behind Gabriel, Pickett and Flacco on the depth chart, occupying the fourth spot. It's not hard to argue against, as Flacco didn't play in the game and Pickett, who was acquired by the Browns in the offseason after serving as the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles' backup, is nursing an injury. As for Gabriel, he was selected in the third round at 94th overall in the 2025 draft. Sanders went in the fifth round at 144th overall. Per usual NFL protocol, the depth chart will likely remain unchanged until each passer gets on the field and is given a chance to showcase themselves. But if Sanders' performance is worth anything, he certainly raised the bar for not only Gabriel but each of the players in the Cleveland quarterback room.
