Mark Chapman's joke about Gary Lineker, football team he supports, BBC Match of the Day pay
Mark Chapman will host the first Match of the Day show of the new Premier League season on Saturday as he, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates take over from departed stalwart Gary Lineker Mark Chapman will host the first Match of the Day show of the new Premier League season. The 51-year-old will share hosting duties with Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates this campaign after Gary Lineker's exit. The BBC flagship will have a new permanent host for the first time since 1999 this term after former England striker Lineker stepped down, ceasing all involvement with the organisation from the end of last season after sparking an antisemitism row with a social media post. Lineker's exit was announced in November last year, and it was confirmed in January that ex-MOTD 2 host Chapman, renowned presenter Logan and former Sky Sports star Cates would rotate to fill his shoes. Chapman will take the reins on Saturday, and Mirror Football takes a look at his life away from the screen, including where his footballing loyalties lie and how much he earns. Mark Chapman's Gary Lineker joke Although Saturday will be Chapman's first show as permanent host, as per PA, with colleague Logan taking on the Sunday rendition, he is no stranger to fronting MOTD. Chapman's role with MOTD 2 often saw him host the midweek editions of the show, and an appearance in January saw him crack a joke amid the announcement of Lineker's exit. The 51-year-old opened the broadcast alongside Micah Richards and Alan Shearer with a witty allusion to his upcoming role, declaring: "Evening, thought I'd get the practice in…" His co-stars couldn't help but chuckle at the admission, with Shearer exclaiming: "You haven't wasted any time, have you? Six months too early!" Chapman retorted: "It's going to be a long night, eh?" What football club does Mark Chapman support? Former host Lineker did not hide his love for boyhood side Leicester City, for whom he began his footballing career. He played over 200 times for the Foxes from 1978 until 1985. Chapman, who is not an ex-pro, having started life with the BBC in 1996 as a community announcer, also has an affinity for a top English side in Manchester United. Born in Rochdale, Chapman told the iPaper in 2018: "It's not my fault that I support a big team! I had to put up with a lot of poor, if at least entertaining, stuff in the 1980s. I am a genuine Manchester United fan." After the Red Devils endured a difficult 15th-placed Premier League finish last season, with some dismal results, Chapman explained on a 2025 appearance on the game show Catchphrase: "By the time we go on air, I've had enough time to stop being a sore loser. So by then I'm fairly impartial." How much does Mark Chapman earn? Lineker was renowned for being one of the BBC's highest-paid staff members during his time with the organisation. It was reported that he took home roughly £1.75million last year before stepping down. Colleague Shearer was also a top earner last year with a reported salary of £440,000, though Chapman earns considerably less than the two former England strikers. Over the course of the 2021/22 season, Chapman earned roughly £250k, and his salary was boosted the following term to around £325k. During the 2023/24 season, Chapman took home somewhere in the region of £260k for his coverage on Radio 5 Live, MOTD 2, the Challenge Cup, the Euros and Olympic Games.

Edinburgh schoolgirl 'living her dream' as youngest Fringe street performer aged 11
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An Edinburgh schoolgirl has been named the youngest Fringe street performer at the festival this year. Caitlin Roisin, 11, started playing musical instruments when she was just two-years-old and has continued to progress her talents for almost 10 years. Since the Festival Fringe got underway this year, Caitlin has put on a street performance six times. Along with her guitar, the aspiring musician performs songs including Zombie, Counting Stars and Shotgun. Building large crowds around her as she performs, dad Stephen Tierney, is "extremely proud" of his daughter. Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Caitlin said: "I started to play my first instrument at two and I just built it up and up. I started going to Totally Sound and after that I got used to doing some busking. "When I heard I could do busking at the Fringe, we signed up for it. I have done six performances so far. "Sometimes it can be scary but when you continue it, everything becomes calmer. I am really proud of myself." Performing on the Royal Mile, Caitlin is surrounded by a number of experienced buskers of an older age. Dad Stephen, said it is "startling" seeing her perform to a large crowd of people. She recently started P7 and is planning on balancing her school life with her busking throughout the month. Stephen added: "When she first started performing, I was impressed she had the confidence at 11 - I am obviously very proud of her. "I think it's remarkable what she can do. It's startling when you see her next to other professional street performers. I think a lot of people do a double take because she is smaller and younger. "A lot of the locals relationship with the fringe is a love/hate one so it's nice for a local to be up there and claiming a bit of there for herself. Our house is full of instruments and when she was two, she expressed an interest. "We got her a ukulele and she would make up songs from a very young age. She became competent and when she was seven, she got her first guitar and it's progressed from there." After first starting her music journey with Totally Sound, Caitlin will be performing at Mercat Cross behind St Giles Cathedral as part of their Community Stage 2025. The show will take place on Friday, August 22, at 3.30pm.

He made light work of the ITV show's pyramid - with 29 seconds remaining to answer the £50,000 Catchphrase. At this point, Joe hit a stumbling block as he tried to work out the last puzzle. It first showed various shops, with stop signs on display in the window. The key focus was "Sign World", which had a single stop sign and an arrow pointing to it. Joe initially guessed "Stop sign" and "Only a stop sign", as the clock ticked away. With only four seconds left, the actor correctly answered "One stop shop." It meant Joe scooped £50,000 for his charity - as well as £6,700 he won in earlier rounds. Host Stephen Mulhern said: "Do you know what, that is incredible. Wow, I have never seen it done like that." Joe then revealed he couldn't wait to share the good news with his charity. Ricky Wilson misses out on huge jackpot as he struggles through Celebrity Catchphrase final - would you have done better He joined the Emmerdale cast this year, playing shady new bad guy Ray Walters. Introduced with connections to Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb), it was revealed he would be involved with Dylan (Fred Kettle). The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000. - Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the "worst" question in the show's history. The 1% Club - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: "Edna's birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen's birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir's birthday must be the 'X' of January." It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir's birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence. - Viewers of Lee Mack's popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The Chase - The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: "Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?" The options were - sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots - with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes. Long-time soap fans will remember Joe as EastEnders' Matthew Rose from 1997 to 2000. The character feuded with Steve Owen (Martin Kemp) - who memorably framed him for murder. Elsewhere, Joe recently shared a difference between working on the two soaps. Celebrity Catchphrase airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
