Take-Two delays 'GTA VI' to May 2026, extending wait for gaming's most anticipated title

CNA02-05-2025
Take-Two Interactive on Friday pushed the release of "Grand Theft Auto VI" to May 26, 2026, extending the wait for the most hotly anticipated title in video-gaming history and sending its shares tumbling 9 per cent in premarket trading.
The title, developed by Rockstar Games, was previously slated for a fall 2025 launch. The franchise is the crown jewel in Take-Two's portfolio, accounting for a significant share of revenue and player engagement, and expectations for the upcoming title have been baked into Wall Street forecasts for months.
The game is expected to be an instant hit, with billions of dollars in sales each year, according to several analysts. The previous entry, Grand Theft Auto V, released in 2013, has sold more than 200 million copies, making it one of the best-selling video games of all time.
"We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a groundbreaking blockbuster entertainment experience," Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said.
Delays have become commonplace in modern game development as studios grapple with rising production costs and growing pressure from players to deliver polished experiences at launch.
The delay now pushes the game out of Take-Two's fiscal 2026 release window and into 2027, which will likely bring down booking expectations for the next fiscal year. The company also reiterated its expectations for sequential increases in net bookings for fiscal 2026 and 2027.
Despite the postponement, Take-Two has a number of titles lined up for the next fiscal year, including "Borderlands 4" and "Mafia: The Old Country," which are expected to be big launches in their own right.
"Given that Take-Two reiterated expectations of record level net bookings in both FY'26 and FY'27, we think this alleviates some of the potential concerns around sales cannibalization in FY'26," D.A. Davidson & Co analyst Wyatt Swanson said.
Rockstar Games unveiled the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI in December 2023, set to Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road."
The teaser confirmed the game's return to Vice City, a fictional take on Miami, and introduced Lucia, the franchise's first female lead. It hinted at a modern-day Bonnie-and-Clyde duo and drew more than 100 million views within 24 hours.
"GTA VI" was also expected to be a major driver of overall video game industry growth this year after the market underwent a downturn following pandemic highs.
The delay also comes amid a period of economic uncertainty in the industry as sweeping U.S. tariffs have led to a surge in gaming console prices and a pullback in consumer spending, denting sales prospects for many game publishers.

Games industry in search of new winning combo at this week's Gamescom trade fair

[PARIS] The global games industry gathers for the vast Gamescom trade fair in the German city of Cologne, Germany this week, with hopes that upcoming heavy-hitters such as Grand Theft Auto VI can help the industry escape its doldrums. The opening night's event on Tuesday (Aug 19) will show off major releases slated for the months ahead, with the starring role going to Black Ops 7 – the new instalment in the sprawling Call of Duty saga. Trade visitors will have the whole of Wednesday to peruse the stands and make connections, before tens of thousands of enthusiastic gamers are unleashed on the vast salon from Thursday to Sunday. Last year's Gamescom drew almost 335,000 people to the Cologne exhibition centre, where studios lay on vast stands with consoles or PCs offering hands-on play with the latest releases. Nintendo is back in 2025 after staying away last year, surfing on record launch sales for its Switch 2 console. Microsoft's Xbox gaming division will show off new portable hardware expected to be released towards the end of the year. Take-Two sees annual bookings below revised estimates as "GTA VI" delay weighs

Take-Two Interactive on Thursday forecast fiscal 2026 bookings below revised Wall Street expectations, signaling that a strong lineup of releases this year may not cushion a hit from the delay of its highly anticipated "Grand Theft Auto VI". The company expects bookings of between $5.9 billion and $6 billion, compared with expectations of $6.46 billion, according to an average of analysts' estimates compiled by Visible Alpha that were revised after "GTA VI" was delayed. Shares of the New York-based company fell nearly 2 per cent in extended trading. The next installment in the best-selling "Grand Theft Auto" franchise is expected to sell millions of copies and generate billions in the first few weeks. Take-Two's decision to delay the long-awaited game into fiscal 2027 could weigh on its overall bookings for this year, but could benefit it in the next. "As we bring our exciting lineup to market, including Grand Theft Auto VI in fiscal 2027, we expect to achieve record levels of net bookings," said Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. The delay of "GTA VI" has led to a wave of release dates for that launch window from publishers looking to capitalize on the absence of Take-Two's likely blockbuster title which would have dominated sales charts. Take-Two has other titles lined up for the year such as "Borderlands 4", and "Mafia: The Old Country", but their potentially strong releases are unlikely to stave off a hit from the delay of "GTA VI." The company expects bookings for the first quarter to be between $1.25 billion and $1.30 billion, compared with estimates of $1.28 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
