Sports NGO Seeks Tax-Free Status For Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par In Maharashtra
Last Updated:
Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par received a great response upon its June 20 release. Elite Games Federation requested Maharashtra's CM Devendra Fadnavis to make it tax-free.
Aamir Khan's latest release, Sitaare Zameen Par, has received a good response from the audience and critics alike for its emotional depth and powerful storytelling. Now, the Elite Games Federation, a prominent sports NGO, has formally approached the Maharashtra government requesting that the film be granted tax-free status in the state.
The NGO sent an official letter to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, talking about the film's socially relevant themes. Directed by RS Prasanna, Sitaare Zameen Par tells the story of a disgraced basketball coach tasked with training a team of neurodivergent individuals.
In a post shared on Instagram, the federation wrote, 'This Aamir Khan film is not just entertainment — it is a moving portrayal of the abilities, struggles, and dreams of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It aligns perfectly with our mission to promote inclusion in sports and society, especially for our para-athletes."

They added that declaring the film tax-free in Maharashtra will be beneficial. 'Making this film tax-free will allow it to reach more families, schools, and communities — spreading a vital message of empathy, accessibility, and acceptance. We hope the government will support this effort to amplify inclusion and make a meaningful impact through cinema," the NGO added.
They concluded, 'We hope the government will support this effort to amplify inclusion and make a meaningful impact through cinema. Let's celebrate every star on earth."
Directed by R.S. Prasanna and co-starring Genelia Deshmukh, the film hit theatres on June 20, 2025, and is already stirring major nostalgia as a spiritual sequel to the 2007 gem Taare Zameen Par.
Sitaare Zameen Par is a sports comedy drama film produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit. Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra and Simran Mangeshkar will make their Hindi cinema debut with the film.
The film also boasts a strong supporting cast with seasoned performers like Dolly Ahluwalia, Gurpal Singh, Brijendra Kala, and Ankita Sehgal.
The story centres on Gulshan, a former star basketball coach portrayed by Aamir Khan, who is ordered to coach a group of neurodivergent children as part of his community service following a DUI offence. What starts off as a begrudging assignment soon evolves into a life-changing experience for both him and the team. Genelia Deshmukh plays Sunita, Gulshan's supportive wife.
N ews18 gave 3.5 rating to Sitaare Zameen Par. A part of our review read, 'Unlike Taare Zameen Par's Nikumbh, Gulshan isn't perfect. This is a flawed, man-child character, dealing with his own traumas, learning to navigate life with the help of those who suffer developmental delays. So far, on paper, Sitaare Zameen Par seems rather fantastic, novel, and heartfelt. And don't get us wrong — it definitely is all of that. But it also has its share of flaws that become a bump in its path to becoming a great film. To start with, at 2 hours 39 minutes, the film appears to be an extremely long and slow-moving affair."

'Housefull 5' Box Office collection day 18: Akshay Kumar's film slows down, earns Rs 1.15 crore on third Monday
Akshay Kumar's 'Housefull 5' is now facing a steady dip in box office numbers. After enjoying a strong 17-day run, the comedy film is slowly losing its shine, especially after the release of Aamir Khan's new film 'Sitaare Zameen Par'. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A good start but now slipping 'Housefull 5' opened well and collected a solid Rs 176.10 crore (India net) in its first 17 days. It gave fans of the franchise a familiar dose of comedy and chaos, with a star-studded cast and entertaining moments. However, the box office buzz is now fading. On Day 18, which was the third Monday, the film only earned Rs 1.15 crore, according to early estimates by Sacnilk. Weekend was better, weekdays are tough The film did manage to bring in more audiences over the weekend. On Saturday day 16, it collected Rs 2.5 crore, and on Sunday day 17, the collections rose to Rs 3.5 crore. But Monday's drop suggests that fewer people are heading to the theatres during the week. With this, the total India net collection now stands at Rs 177.25 crore, according to Sacnilk. Competition from Aamir Khan's film The drop in collection for 'Housefull 5' also seems linked to the release of Aamir Khan's 'Sitaare Zameen Par', which hit cinemas on June 20. Since its release, the film has been attracting steady crowds and pulling viewers away from 'Housefull 5'. Low occupancy According to Sacnilk, 'Housefull 5' had an overall Hindi occupancy of 13.32% on Monday, June 23, 2025, across all screenings in India. The morning shows saw a low turnout with just 6.85% occupancy. Audience numbers picked up slightly in the later parts of the day, with 15.23% in the afternoon, 15.34% in the evening, and 15.87% during night shows.
