Iraq's Kataib Hezbollah warns US against intervening in Israel-Iran conflict

Reuters15-06-2025
BAGHDAD, June 15 - Iran-aligned Iraqi armed group Kataib Hezbollah warned on Sunday it would resume attacks on U.S. troops in the region if the United States intervenes in the conflict between Israel and Iran.
'We are closely monitoring the movements of the American enemy's army in the region," Kataib Hezbollah Secretary-General Abu Hussein al-Hamidawi said in a statement. "If America intervenes in the war, we will act directly against its interests and bases spread across the region without hesitation.'
Founded in the aftermath of the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, Kataib Hezbollah is one of the elite Iraqi armed factions closest to Iran. The group, a key pillar of Iran's network of regional proxy forces, has claimed responsibility for dozens of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and U.S. forces in both Iraq and Syria.
Early last year, Kataib Hezbollah announced the suspension of all its military operations against U.S. troops in the region in response to efforts by the Iraqi government.
Kataib Hezbollah is part of a coalition of Iran-aligned groups known collectively as the "Axis of Resistance" — an umbrella of hardline Shi'ite armed factions that have claimed more than 150 attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria since the onset of the Gaza war about 20 months ago.
Iraq, a rare ally of both Washington and Tehran, is striving to avoid upsetting its fragile stability while focusing on rebuilding after years of conflict.

Gaza-Israel war latest: Israel launches Gaza City invasion as Netanyahu ramps up takeover plan

Palestinians are fleeing Gaza City after the Israeli military launched the next stage of its ground offensive, despite widespread international condemnation. Brigadier General Effie Defrin said that IDF troops had begun circling the outskirts of Gaza City as part of the first stages of its new assault. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the city are expected to be ordered to evacuate. Following a clash with Hamas south of Khan Younis in the strip on Wednesday, the IDF spokesman said: 'We will deepen the attack on Hamas in Gaza City, a stronghold of governmental and military terror for the terrorist organization.' Hamas, in a statement on Telegram, accused Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu of obstructing the ceasefire deal in favour of continuing a 'brutal war against innocent civilians in Gaza City.' It comes as Israel said it would call up to 60,000 reservists for the new offensive and other heavily populated areas of the war-torn Gaza Strip. More than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since 7 October 2023, according to the enclave's Hamas-run health ministry. Israel begins ‘first stages' of planned military offensive in Gaza City

Israel has begun the 'first stages' of its new offensive after plans to take over Gaza City were approved, with hundreds of thousands of Palestinians expected to be ordered to evacuate. The Israeli military is calling up 60,000 reservists, doubling the current number to 120,000, for the planned operation. The offensive raises concerns about further displacement, disruption of humanitarian aid, and an imminent risk of famine in Gaza, which is already largely destroyed. Hamas has accepted a new ceasefire proposal for a 60-day truce and the release of half the remaining hostages, though Israel and the United States have not yet responded. The planned offensive has triggered global outrage, including from UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, and has caused internal controversy in Israel among families of the remaining hostages.

Gaza latest: Israel launches 'first stages of attack' on Gaza City

08:11:06 Israel approves controversial West Bank settlement plan Bezalel Smotrich, Israel's finance minister, has announced a controversial plan for a settlement project in the occupied West Bank. The ultranationalist in the ruling right-wing coalition said in a statement yesterday that the government was delivering with the settlement what it had promised for years: "The Palestinian state is being erased from the table, not with slogans but with actions." He said last week that the settlement would "finally bury the idea of a Palestinian state, because there is nothing to recognise and no one to recognise". The UK's Foreign Secretary David Lammy has condemned the plan, saying it "would divide a Palestinian state in two". In a post on X, Lammy called the settlement "a flagrant breach of international law", which "critically undermines the two-state solution", and urged the Israeli government to reverse the decision. The UN also condemned the decision, with spokesperson Stephane Dujarric saying that it "will drive a stake through the heart of the two-state solution". Where is the settlement? The settlement is set to be built in E1, an open tract of land east of Jerusalem, and includes around 3,500 apartments to expand the existing settlement of Maale Adumim. E1 has been eyed for Israeli development for more than two decades, but plans were halted due to pressure from the US during previous administrations. Today, an estimated 700,000 Israeli settlers live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. There is also a growing movement of Israelis wanting to build settlements in Gaza. Settlements are illegal under international law and have been condemned by the UN. They are, however, authorised by the Israeli government. 07:53:44 Plumes of smoke rise over Gaza capital Smoke has been rising over Gaza City this morning after an Israeli strike. Hundreds of thousands of displaced people are sheltering in the city and it holds some of the last remnants of critical infrastructure remaining in Gaza. 07:43:59 Israel launches new offensive on Gaza City As we just mentioned, Israel's military has launched the first steps of an operation to take over Gaza City and called up around 60,000 reservists. "We have begun the preliminary operations and the first stages of the attack on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding the outskirts of Gaza City," Effie Defrin, Israel's military spokesperson, told reporters. Defrin said troops were already operating on the outskirts of Gaza City, and Hamas was now a "battered and bruised" guerrilla force. "We will deepen the attack on Hamas in Gaza City, a stronghold of governmental and military terror for the terrorist organisation," the spokesman said. A military official briefing reporters yesterday said reserve soldiers would not report for duty until September, an interval that gives mediators some time to bridge gaps between Hamas and Israel over truce terms. The Israeli statements signal that Israel is pressing ahead with its plan to seize Gaza's biggest urban centre despite international criticism of an operation likely to force the displacement of many more Palestinians. It comes after Israel's security cabinet, chaired by Netanyahu, approved a plan this month to expand the campaign in Gaza with the aim of taking Gaza City. 07:39:40 Welcome to our coverage Welcome to our coverage from Gaza as Israel enters the first stages of its planned takeover operation on Gaza City. The expanded assault on areas sheltering hundreds of thousands of civilians has sparked condemnation inside Israel and abroad. Many Israelis fear the offensive will further endanger the remaining hostages in Gaza - just 20 of the 50 remaining are thought to be alive. But Benjamin Netanyahu has said a final push is needed to "complete the defeat of Hamas". He has vowed to continue the war until all the hostages are returned and Hamas has been disarmed. Elsewhere, hospitals in Gaza said they had received the bodies of 34 Palestinians killed yesterday as Israeli strikes continued across the territory. Among them were nine people killed while seeking aid, officials at two hospitals told The Associated Press. A key mediator from Qatar, Majed al-Ansari, has also stressed the urgency of brokering a ceasefire in Gaza after Hamas showed a "positive response" to a proposal. But Israel has yet to weigh in. We'll bring you more updates throughout the day.
