Oklahoma beats Alabama to book Women's College World Series trip
For the seventh straight season, the Oklahoma softball team has a late-spring trip planned to Oklahoma City.
OU, the national No. 2-seed, booked a seventh straight trip to the Women's College World Series on Saturday, beating Alabama, 13-2. The last time the Sooners failed to make to the WCWS, some of its players were in junior-high school.
An eight-run explosion in the third inning proved more than enough. Oklahoma sent 13 hitters to the plate in the frame. Gabbie Garcia hit a two-run home run while Ailana Agbayani and Isabela Emerling followed with RBI singles. Abigale Dayton plated two more on a single and Ella Parker capped things with a two-run double. Every run came with one out.
Kierston Deal lost her shutout in the bottom half of the inning, but it meant little. She ultimately pitched four innings, giving up two runs, both on solo home runs. Audrey Lowry closed things out in the five-inning run-rule win.
Parker and Nelly McEnroe-Marinas hit solo home runs to bookend OU's four-run fifth inning. In-between, Garcia hit another two-run shot provided enough scoring to force Alabama to respond in the bottom of the inning to avoid an early finish.
Oklahoma coach Patty Gasso will coach in her 18th Women's College World Series. She has led OU to eight national championships, including each of the last four.

'Opportunity a lot of kids didn't get to have.' Indy baseball team competes in RBI World Series
Show Caption Indianapolis-based Indy RBI played in the RBI World Series last week, losing in the championship game. Notre Dame recruit Desmond Francis said it was "truly a blessing" after leading the team with a .447 batting average. Participating in the 2025 RBI Baseball World Series meant more to Park Tudor senior Desmond Francis than just playing baseball. Francis, Mayo Fernandez (Fishers), Maalik Perkins (Whiteland), Theo Kramer (Lawrence North) and several other Indy-area baseball players led Indy RBI to the championship game against Arizona Diamondbacks RBI at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Florida on Friday. "Being able to play at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex was a blessing," Francis said. "I'd never been there. I saw it on social media, but I never really had a grasp of what it looked like. Going to the stadium, to the backfields, the complexes and facilities, it was truly a blessing. "Playing in the championship game, at night, with high energy, the crowd, TV (cameras), mics and everything. ... It's an opportunity a lot of kids didn't get to have. I'm happy that it's something my teammates and coaches got to share together." Indy RBI went 5-0 during regional play in Kansas City, Missouri, earning a trip to the World Series. Indy advanced to the championship game with wins over Detroit Tigers RBI and NOLA RBI before falling to D-Backs RBI 5-4 in the championship on MLB Network. Nick Johnson (Lawrence Central) led Indy going 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Over 11 games, Francis, a Notre Dame recruit, led Indy with a .447 batting average, one double, two triples, 11 RBIs, 10 runs scored and nine stolen bases. Jayden Adorno (Columbus North) was the team's top pitcher, striking out six over 13⅓ innings with a 3.67 ERA. "It was extremely fun. Some of the most fun I've had. We meshed really, really well on the field, and we meshed really, really well off the field," Francis said. "We treated each other like brothers off the field and played like we'd been together for 10 years. "It was a really good experience. Everybody was hyped, excited and wanted to play the game of baseball." RBI is a program run by Major League Baseball created to give youth from underserved and diverse communities the chance to play baseball. It uses the sport to teach life lessons while stressing academic success and core values like teamwork. More than 200 RBI alum have been selected in the MLB draft during the program's 36-year history, including active players Taj Bradley (Minnesota Twins), Lawrence Butler (Athletics'), J.P. Crawford (Seattle Mariners), Hunter Greene (Cincinnati Reds) and Michael Harris II (Atlanta Braves). RBI hopes to revive interest in baseball within diverse communities, reversing a troubling trend in participation among Black players. The MLB reached an all-time high in 1981 when 18.7% of the league consisted of Black players, according to By 2016, the percentage of Black players in the MLB had fallen to 6.7%. This season, 59 Black players appeared on Opening Day active and inactive lists, per "Throughout travel ball you don't get much experience with players that look like you," Francis said. "It's especially hard in Indiana, you don't see it a lot. Being able to play with guys that look like me, we've shared the same experiences, Black and Brown kids with different backgrounds, they go to different schools. That was really fun. "It was a really competitive tournament and there were a lot of great, talented players there."

USC football tied to Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer sports betting story
On November 19, 2022, Lincoln Riley and USC football defeated crosstown rival UCLA, 48-45. It was arguably the Trojans' biggest victory under Riley to date, sending the team to the Pac-12 Championship Game and keeping their College Football Playoff hopes alive. Now, almost three years later, the game is suddenly back in the news again. Monday night, Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer's Venmo transactions went viral on social media. On November 20, 2022, the day after the game, Mateer sent a payment titled 'Sports Gambling (UCLA vs USC)'. NCAA rules do not allow student-athletes to gamble on NCAA events. Mateer, who was a freshman at Washington State at the time, obviously would have been in violation of this policy if he was found to have done so. The story is especially ironic given that Mateer now plays for Oklahoma, whom Riley used to coach. Nearly all Sooner fans cannot stand Riley, and have held a grudge against him ever since he left Norman for Los Angeles back in November of 2021. For Oklahoma's starting quarterback to potentially get in trouble with the NCAA and maybe face a suspension due to gambling on one of Riley's USC games would be yet another unique twist in the saga—and one that USC fans, unlike those in Norman, would likely find rather funny. We will see where the truth leads. Even if the story turns out to be nothing, it's still a remarkable plot point near the end of the 2025 college football offseason.

Watch: Angels turn triple play off Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani
1 of 5 | Designated hitter Shohei Ohtani homered, but also hit into a triple play in a Los Angeles Dodgers loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday in Anaheim, Calif. File Photo by Mike Zarrilli/UPI | License Photo Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Zach Neto snared a Shohei Ohtani liner before tagging second base and tossing to first to record a rare triple play in a Los Angeles Angels win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The sequence occurred in the top of the sixth inning of the 7-6 extra-innings triumph Tuesday in Anaheim, Calif. Neto and the Angels also rallied from two- and three-run deficits to secure their second series victory over the Dodgers this season and sixth-consecutive win over their crosstown rivals, dating back to 2024. "These guys never quit, but that was exceptionally not quitting," Angels manager Ray Montgomery told reporters. "So many people contributed along the way." The Angels and Dodgers were tied 5-5 to start the sixth. Dodgers pinch hitter Miguel Rojas started the frame with a single to center field. Catcher Dalton Rushing hit another single two pitches later to put two runners on for Ohtani. The Dodgers phenom worked an even count at 2-2 against Angels relief pitcher Brock Burke. He then reached over the strike zone and smacked a 97.1-mph outside fastball up the middle. Neto threw up his left arm and pulled the ball out of the air for the first out of the inning. He then beat Rojas to second base and rifled a throw to first. Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel ended the play by tagging Rushing to complete the eighth triple play in Angels history. "I think I realized it about an inning and a half later," Neto told reporters, according to The Athletic. "I was like, 'Dang I just made a triple play.' It's pretty cool." Ohtani is just the second reigning MVP in MLB history to hit into a triple play, according to The Dodgers designated hitter redeemed himself with a 404-foot solo home run to lead off the ninth inning, but Schanuel tied the score and forced extra innings with an RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning. Angels pitcher Connor Brogdon retired the Dodgers in order in the 10th. Second baseman Christian Moore recorded a bunt single to lead off the bottom of the final inning, pushing runner Taylor Ward to third. Right fielder Jo Adell stepped to the plate for the final at-bat. He fell behind 0-2 in the count against Dodgers reliever Ben Casparius. The right-handed pitcher missed the zone with his next offering. Adell proceeded to foul off the next two pitches before connecting with a Casparius sweeper. The ball struck the dirt in front of home plate and bounced over the Dodgers infield, allowing Ward to easily score the game's final run. Ward went 2 for 5 with a home run. Moore also recorded two hits for the Angels. Starting pitcher Victor Mederos allowed three hits and three runs over four innings, but was not on record for a decision. Ohtani went 1 for 3 with an RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Rushing went 2 for 3 with a two-run home run. Outfielders Andy Pages and Teoscar Hernandez also recorded two hits apiece in the loss. Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan allowed five hits and five runs over five innings. The Angels (58-62) sit in fourth place in the American League West, nine games behind the division-leading Seattle Mariners (67-53). The Dodgers (68-52) are now tied with the San Diego Padres (68-52) atop the National League West. The Angels will host the Dodgers in a series finale at 9:38 p.m. EDT Wednesday at Angel Stadium.
