Chennai: Actor and TVK president Vijay on Friday strongly condemned BJP govt at the Centre for trying to paint a caste colour on social reformer Periyar E V Ramasamy, one of the five ideological mentors of TVK.
At a function to honour toppers of SSLC and Class XII held in a private hotel in Mamallapuram, Vijay asked students to stay away from caste and religious divisive ideas.
"Like narcotic substances, we should keep caste and religion away from us. It is good for all... Never allow divisive ideas to disturb your mind," Vijay said.
"Are farmers cultivating based on caste and religion? Are labourers manufacturing products based on caste and religion? Does nature differentiate based on caste and religion?" Vijay asked.
Hitting out at BJP govt, Vijay said, "In the recently held UPSC exam, they tried to paint a caste colour on Periyar. We strongly condemn this."
Asking students not to get emotional on any issue, Vijay said students should have a technical and scientific approach-based thinking as it is the only way to survive in the AI-dominated world.
"The sky is vast and wide, and you have strong winds. So, feel free to fly like a bird with courage, conviction, and confidence," Vijay said.

Only if there is democracy, the world and all the fields in it will have freedom. If we have proper democracy, everyone will get everything."
Vijay asked students to ask their family members to exercise their democratic rights properly.

Security upgraded for Tejashwi, Samrat and others ahead of Bihar polls

Ahead of the assembly election, the Bihar government has upgraded the security cover of six leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav. The Home Department (Special Branch) issued the notification on August 9, however it was shared to the media on Monday (August 11, 2025). Special Secretary of Home Department K. Suhita Anupam has written a letter to the Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) to make the arrangement for security after the decision was taken in the meeting of the State Security Committee on August 1, 2025. The security cover of two MPs has also been upgraded, which includes Purnia Independent MP Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav and Araria MP Pradeep Kumar Singh of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The list also includes two lawmakers from the ruling Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] - MLA Gyanendra Kumar Singh Gyanu representing Barh assembly constituency and MLC Neeraj Kumar. According to the notification, BJP leader Mr. Choudhary will be now covered under 'Z+' along with Advanced Security Liaison (ASL). Similarly, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Mr. Tejashwi has been given 'Z' category security cover. 'Threats to life' Last month during the Monsoon Session, Rabri Devi, former Chief Minister of Bihar had raised concern over the security of her son Tejashwi Yadav claiming four attempts were made to assassinate him. She had accused the ruling BJP and JD(U) claiming that the life of the former Deputy Chief Minister was under severe threat and his security cover should be reviewed or enhanced. Last month, Tej Pratap Yadav, the MLA and former minister who has been expelled from the RJD for six years had said that his life was in danger and demanded more security from the State government. However, his name does not figure in the list. The security cover of Pappu Yadav, Mr. Singh and Mr. Gyanu have been upgraded to 'Y+', whereas Mr. Kumar is now entitled to 'Y' category security. A few months back, Pappu Yadav claimed that he had received a death threat call in the name of the gangster Lawrence Bishnoi gang. Later, police arrested that person and clarified that no connection was made to the notorious gangster. A senior officer in the special branch said that the decision has been taken, keeping the upcoming assembly election in mind, as these leaders would be taking part in several public meetings during the campaign.

The ugly truth of Trump's 'big beautiful bill': It will cut $186 billion in food aid leaving 18 million children hungry in America's public schools

Trump's new tax bill cuts SNAP funding and shifts costs to US states President Donald Trump's "big beautiful" tax and spending bill, signed on 4th July, carries a devastating cost for millions of American children. The legislation slashes $186 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) over the next decade — a move that threatens to leave 18 million children without access to free school meals. Food insecurity is already a pressing issue in classrooms nationwide. Teachers frequently witness students arriving hungry, struggling to focus, and unable to engage fully in their education. As Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association (NEA), wrote in Time magazine, "School meals are more than a budget line item. They are lifelines that help millions of students learn and grow." Hunger is a barrier to learning Research from the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) shows that children who participate in school breakfast and lunch programmes perform better academically, demonstrate improved behaviour, and have higher attendance rates. Yet, under this new law, SNAP benefits will be cut, eligibility restricted, and administrative costs shifted to states — making it harder for vulnerable families to access these crucial supports. Currently, more than 42 million Americans receive SNAP benefits to help buy food, with children constituting a significant portion of beneficiaries, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP). But the new bill tightens eligibility rules and requires states to pay a larger share of benefit costs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Our healthy baby has a hole in his heart, please help us! Donate For Health Donate Now Undo Many states face the difficult choice of raising taxes, cutting other services, or restricting food aid — all of which could mean fewer children receive the meals they need to thrive. The scale of the problem According to official data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the average state error rate on SNAP payments is about 10.9%, which will force many states to cover up to 15% of the programme's food benefit costs. For example, California alone could owe $1.8 billion by 2028, based on projections from Feeding America. Such financial burdens come amid already tight budgets and cuts to education and public services. States with high numbers of children eligible for free or reduced-price meals, especially in rural and southern areas, will be hardest hit. According to Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) data, nearly two-thirds of students in Texas qualify for free school meals, and in Mississippi, that figure is an astonishing 99.7%. The bill's cuts will disproportionately affect the most vulnerable communities, widening inequalities and harming children's ability to learn. Teachers are stepping in — but it's not enough Educators nationwide are already going above and beyond to support hungry students. Many spend their own money on snacks, organise food drives, or implement creative programmes to ensure no child goes hungry during the school day. However, as Pringle warns, "This isn't about whether we can afford to feed kids — it's about whether we choose to." Without federal support, schools will struggle to fill the gap left by SNAP reductions, and food banks will be unable to meet the increased demand. The long-term consequences could be severe — diminished academic achievement, poorer health, and lifelong disadvantages for millions of children. A national crisis in the making The "big beautiful" bill is a stark example of how policy decisions reverberate far beyond Capitol Hill, affecting the daily lives and futures of America's children. By cutting food assistance and shifting costs to states, it jeopardises the wellbeing and education of millions of students. Ensuring that no child goes hungry at school should be a bipartisan priority. As this law takes effect, educators, policymakers, and communities must come together to protect the essential programmes that keep children fed and ready to learn. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. 'I will know in minutes if we can make deal': Donald Trump on meeting with Vladimir Putin; talks on Russia-Ukraine peace deal

US President Donald Trump on Monday said he would know "within minutes" if a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is possible when he meets Russian President Vladimir Putin later this week. "We're going to have a meeting with Vladimir Putin and ... probably in the first two minutes, I'll know exactly whether or not a deal can be made," Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday. When reporter asked, "how will you know that?" The US President responded saying, "Because that's what I do — I make deals." Trump said this shortly after taking control of the Washington, DC, police department and deploying the National Guard. Trump further said he aimed to have "constructive conversations" with the Russian leader and wanted to see "a ceasefire very, very quickly." "I'm going to speak to Vladimir Putin and I'm going to be telling him, you've got to end this war. And he wasn't going to mess with I thought it was very respectful that the president of Russia is coming to our country as opposed to us going to his country or even a third-party place, but I think we'll have constructive conversations," Trump said. He also revealed plans to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders immediately after the talks. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like When Knee Pain Hits, Start Eating These Foods, and Feel Your Pain Go Away (It's Genius) Read More Undo "The next meeting will be with Zelenskyy and Putin, or Zelenskyy, Putin and me," Trump said, further adding that, "I'll be there if they need me, but I want to have a meeting set up between the two leaders." The US president also criticised Zelenskyy for ruling out territorial concessions without constitutional approval. "I mean, he's got approval to go into war and kill everybody. But he needs approval to do a land swap?" Trump said, adding that "there'll be some land swapping going on." At one point, Trump mistakenly said he was "going to Russia on Friday." The meeting is actually set for Friday, August 15, in Alaska, a state that has not been part of Russia since its sale to the US in 1867. The far northern state was chosen for its symbolic location across the Bering Strait from Russia's easternmost point. It will be Putin's first visit to the United States in a decade; his last trip was to New York in 2015 for the UN General Assembly Announcing the meeting last week on Truth Social, Trump called it "the highly anticipated meeting" between the President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia which "will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska."
