Top Gun star's harrowing life before turning back on fame

The 80s classic Top Gun catapulted its cast to stardom, including the character of flight instructor Charlie, played by Kelly McGillis, who became one of Hollywood's most sought-after actresses. Fast forward three decades and life has dealt her some tough cards.
Born into a well-off family in Newport Beach, California, McGillis moved to New York to chase her acting dreams, studying at the renowned Julliard School. Despite being robbed at gunpoint in her second year, she didn't let the incident deter her ambitions.
However, in 1982, four years before her breakthrough role, McGillis faced a harrowing experience when two intruders broke into her apartment and raped her at knifepoint. Her screams alerted a neighbour who called the police, leading to the assailants' attempt to escape and subsequent arrest, with the main perpetrator sentenced to three years in prison.
In a 1988 interview with People Magazine, McGillis recounted the terrifying event: "I'll never forget the way they smelled. Like alcohol and old sweat...While one watched, the taller one got on top of me and held the knife to my right eye...Then the other one got on top of me. They kept switching and telling me they were going to beat me until I was dead."
At that time, she shared an apartment with another woman and believed the attack was a divine "punishment" for her sexuality, reports the Mirror US.
McGillis persevered through tough times to land her major role with Harrison Ford in the film Witness in 1985. By 1988, she starred as a prosecutor in The Accused alongside Jodie Foster, tackling the heavy subject of seeking justice for a rape victim, hoping it would help her process her own past trauma.
Her personal life also saw its share of turbulence. In 1989 McGillis married yacht salesman Fred Tillman and although they had two daughters together, their marriage faced challenges, exacerbated when Tillman was caught hiring a prostitute who turned out to be an undercover policewoman.
The duo attempted to make a fresh start by moving to Florida and setting up a bar called Kelly's, where McGillis formed an intimate bond with bartender Melanie Leis. Describing their shared struggles at the time, Leis stated: "We were partners in crime and were both drinking and abusing drugs."
After her divorce in 2002 from Tillman, McGillis stepped away from Tinseltown spotlight to focus on raising her children with Leis in the tranquillity of rural Pennsylvania, later moving to New Jersey to pursue a career as a rehab counsellor.
Returning to acting in 2008, McGillis had a role in The L Word, a lesbian TV drama, and a year later she publicly came out, telling SheWired.com: "I'm done with the man thing.
"Life is a journey and it's about growing and changing and coming to terms with who and what you are and loving who and what you are."
In 2016, she became the target of an attack when an intruder broke into her North Carolina residence.
Then in 2022, when casting for 'Top Gun: Maverick' was underway, McGillis wasn't selected to return to the iconic series, which she believes is due to her refusal to undergo plastic surgery or revert her hair to its famous blonde hue - a claim director Joseph Kosinski has refuted.
Speaking candidly to ET at age 62, she offered a blunt perspective on the beauty standards of Tinseltown: "I'm old, and I'm fat and I look age-appropriate for what my age is. And that is not what that whole scene is about. I'd much rather feel absolutely secure in my skin and my age than place any value in all that other stuff."

Widow 'killed and her body fed to pigs by new boyfriend in Mafia murder'

A widow was brutally murdered, butchered and fed to pigs leading to the arrest of eighty-one people in Italy after it was alleged that mafia gangsters were behind the mother's death. Maria Chindamo was killed in Limbadi in 2016, allegedly as a result of her trying to rebuild her life and business after her husband's death, which left her with valuable land that caught the attention of the mafia. On May 6, she was brutally attacked, slaughtered, and her body dismembered using a tractor before being fed to pigs. A massive operation by Italy's anti-mafia police force was carried out against the 'Ndrangheta in Vibo, Calabria, where prosecutors uncovered disturbing evidence of unsolved crimes, including the horrific murder of Maria, a local businesswoman, reports the Mirror US. Chief Prosecutor Nicola Gratteri, who led the raid, told "Maria Chindamo was killed exactly one year after her husband's suicide, when she allowed herself to post photos with her new partner.", reports the Mirror. "Two days after the shot, she was killed in an inhuman, tragic way. She killed and fed to pigs, her remains ground up with a crawler tractor to make all traces disappear." Gratteri added: "She was killed because she wanted to be a woman and a free entrepreneur." The prosecutor, who has devoted his life to battling the ruthless Calabrian 'Ndrangheta, stated that she was targeted because she "thought of becoming an entrepreneur, looking after the interests of the land and her children and even enrolled in university". The investigation relied heavily on intercepted communications, but detectives also interviewed 18 informants who told officers about their fellow mob members. Regarding Maria's murder, these witnesses provided police with specific details about the case that hadn't been widely reported by the media, which solidified investigators' certainty of their involvement. Maria's brother expressed relief that justice had been served in his sister's case. Vincenzo Chindamo said: "There is a scent of justice in the area. We are waiting to carefully read the documents of this segment of the investigation but I would like to point out one thing immediately: having pursued the search for the truth about my sister's killing for all these years, I finally have my results. "I have never stopped believing in the work of the judiciary, even when there might have been some moments of discouragement. And what has emerged today is rewarding that perseverance." He added: "The 'ndrangheta and the 'ndrangheta subculture are retrograde and losers, while Maria's beauty and smile, even in the clouds, still shine". He recalled when Maria's car was found saying "I remember her Dacia Duster still running, the radio on and the locks of her hair smeared with blood." Gratteri said of the gang: "They did not forgive her freedom and the management of the land she inherited, on which the appetites of a 'Ndrangheta family rested. And also his new love. So Maria, three days after posting the photo with her new partner on social media, vanished into thin air. "You could not afford - added Gratteri - the luxury of starting a new life, of managing that land in an entrepreneurial way and of being able to take care of and raise your children in a free way and leaving the mafia mentality".

Wife's chilling four words after killing, castrating and cooking husband

A California model tied the knot with a man named Bill Nelson only three days after they first met, but Omaiama Nelson's account paints a dark picture of their union. The Egyptian-born model and nanny claimed her husband became violent just after they married, regularly subjecting her to physical and sexual abuse. Pushed to breaking point by her husband's abusive behaviour, Omaiama Nelson committed an act of horrifying violence. She mutilated Bill, killed him with a clothes iron, cooked his hands, and consumed one of his fingers, later expressing relief by saying "I'm glad I lived". Omaiama had settled in California from Egypt five years before the dreadful murder, working as a nanny and model. In 1991, she met 56 year old Bill, a pilot and much older than her, while playing pool at a bar. Their marriage quickly descended into violence, according to Omaiama, with her claims being supported by a psychological assessment that later diagnosed her with PTSD. On Thanksgiving Day in 1991, after another alleged sexual assault by Bill, Omaiama took a lethal stand, reports the Mirror US. Omaiama Nelson, a former Egyptian model, claimed that her husband sexually assaulted her during a bondage session. She told police she managed to break free from her restraints and attacked him with a lamp, stabbed him with scissors, and bludgeoned him to death with a clothes iron. He succumbed to his stab wounds. During the horrific attack, Omaiama was dressed in red, investigators revealed. However, this was just the start of the gruesome end for Bill. After killing Bill, Omaiama embarked on the horrifying task of dismembering her husband's body. It is believed she castrated him as an act of revenge for the alleged sexual assault. In a desperate bid to remove his fingerprints, the murderer boiled her husband's hands and cooked his head. She then mixed his body parts with leftover turkey from their Thanksgiving dinner and disposed of this mixture in the garbage disposal. The entire gruesome act took 12 hours, with Omaiama claiming she was in a 'trance-like state'. Just days prior to the murder, a home video showed the couple enjoying family time in the South of the US with relatives. This footage was presented to the jury before Omaima's parole was denied in 2011 by Orange County prosecutors. After the gruesome killing, Omaima Nelson was spotted driving her husband's red Corvette, which contained black rubbish bags on the front seat with human remains, as CBS2 reported. A video captured just after the police arrived at the scene shows an investigator shocked to discover organs in one of the bags. The trail of evidence led detectives to a blood-soaked flat where it's believed Omaima Nelson tied her husband to the bed and chopped him up. Two crucial pieces of evidence in the trial were a wooden knife and a cleaver. Neighbours reported hearing the waste disposal unit running non-stop for two days. More remains were discovered in a brown suitcase and the freezer. During her trial for the murder of her husband, Omaima Nelson told the court: "If I didn't defend my life, I would have been dead. I'm sorry it happened, but I'm glad I lived... I'm sorry I dismembered him." Omaima confessed to a psychiatrist that she seasoned his ribs with barbecue sauce and tasted them, although she has retracted these claims. Her attempts to persuade the jury that she was a victim of domestic abuse failed, despite a previous psychiatric evaluation and a complaint she made to a nurse in Orange County Jail. The note she wrote stated: "I am ready to lose it and go off on someone. Anyone. I can't sleep at night. I am extremely depressed."

Diver's horrifying death after ignoring warnings and filming final moments

A harrowing clip has captured a diver's final moments before his tragic death at a notorious diving spot after ignoring warnings about the perilous nature of his actions. On April 28, 2000, Russian-Israeli diver Yuri Lipski took the plunge into the infamous Blue Hole in the Red Sea off Egypt and tragically never emerged again. It is believed that Lipski succumbed to the effects of nitrogen narcosis nearly 300 feet below the surface, where the intense pressure likely caused him to experience euphoria, confusion, hallucinations, and poor decision-making. In a grim twist, Lipski's helmet camera was found intact, providing a haunting glimpse into his last moments, as reported by the Daily Star. The recovered footage eerily displays the ocean floor while the sound of Lipski's breathing resonates ominously. Lipski had hoped to film the renowned arch of the Blue Hole, according to Tarek Omar, a technical diver who had met Lipski in Egypt prior to his ill-fated dive, reports the Mirror US. Omar, known as 'The Elder Diver', had warned against the risky solo dive without proper training. "I said 'OK, so you'll need two weeks' training with me first, and then we'll film'," Omar recounted to The Guardian. However, constrained by time, Lipski turned down the offer for training and went ahead with the dive alone. His body was discovered the following morning. The Blue Hole, a submarine sinkhole that attracts divers from around the world, is infamous for its treacherous conditions, with some estimates suggesting that as many as 200 people may have lost their lives there. "Recovering bodies is a case-by-case thing; I do it pro bono," Omar told Scene Arabia. "It is a very critical and difficult thing to do – it requires more than just being a technical diver, it takes more than experience. It is very hard because you dive deep and you stay down to locate the remains." With around 200 fatalities recorded, The Blue Hole remains an infamous yet beguiling destination for scuba enthusiasts globally. This submarine sinkhole, which plummets to approximately 100 metres at its deepest point and features two oceanic connections, presents dual allure and peril—a stone's throw from the shoreline. For Omar, this renowned diving haven has become second nature. "I know it like my kitchen," he disclosed to Cairo Scene, reminiscing over his initial journey into what would become numerous retrieval voyages. A veteran of nearly two decades exploring the depths of the Blue Hole, he once surfaced from the abyss with a title in hand subsequent to an astonishing 209-metre dive.
