Ericsson tops IndyCar Thermal Club test
Andretti Global's Marcus Ericsson posted the quickest lap in his No. 28 Honda on Tuesday to top the six-car private IndyCar Series test at The Thermal Club.
Ericsson's unofficial best of 1m40.136s edged Andretti teammate Kyle Kirkwood in the No. 27 Honda (+0.080s), and it was PREMA Racing's Robert Shwartzman who thoroughly impressed on the team's debut outing by going to P1 on two occasions with the No. 83 Chevy before settling for third (+0.175s).
'Last time we were out here in Thermal, we felt like it wasn't maybe our strongest track or weekend,' Ericsson told RACER. 'So it's good to come back here and work through some stuff. We had a good program trying different things on the three different cars, and I think we learned a bunch that should help us when we come back here in March.'
PREMA's Callum Ilott in the No. 90 Chevy (+0.247s), who spent most of the morning sitting idle, was fourth and Andretti's Colton Herta in the No. 26 Honda (+0.269s), whose running was curtailed due to a an issue, was fifth. Dale Coyne Racing rookie Jacob Abel was sixth with the No. 51 Honda (+1.451s).
'We had a lot to work for in the morning, which was kind of expected, and you never know what you're going to get with a new car to shake down,' Ilott said. 'But we obviously got some stuff (to deal with) and it took a little bit longer to diagnose, but honestly, we did a good job. Got one lap in just before lunch break and we played a bit of catch up towards the end.'
Abel was the busiest driver with 69 laps turned, ahead of Ericsson (60), Shwartzman (54), Herta (53), Kirkwood (52), and Ilott (50), and will have another chance to learn the car when most of the teams head to Sebring in February.
'There's definitely going to be a lot of progress to be made on a lot of different things,' Abel said. 'It was my first day as an IndyCar driver, officially, doing pit stops, hitting the marks, in laps, out laps, all that. I think there was a lot more to our day today to accomplish than just making the car go fast for one lap. We got a lot done.
'We built a pretty good base of communication and it's something I'm pretty happy with. We're just moving forward and working as well as we can with the limited time that we're going to have before we show up at the first race.'
Former Ed Carpenter Racing driver Rinus VeeKay was spotted at the Thermal test and remains high on the list of drivers who could join Coyne in the No. 18 Honda, which serves as the last open seat in the series.

Inside Line: Intrigue About WWTR Race?
INDYCAR Today's question: The NTT INDYCAR SERIES returns to an oval this weekend for the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 presented by Axalta and Valvoline. What intrigues you the most about this race Sunday night at World Wide Technology Raceway? Curt Cavin: I'm most intrigued by Team Penske, not only for this weekend but for the weeks ahead. Who leads the program moving forward and how does the change in leadership impact on-track performance in the months ahead? This weekend, the race strategists will be Luke Mason (for Josef Newgarden), Ben Bretzman (for Scott McLaughlin) and David Faustino (for Will Power). This has been a track where the team has dominated, with Newgarden winning four of the past five races, and Power and McLaughlin combining to win the past four poles. Team Penske still hasn't placed a driver in the first or second finishing positions this season, and there have been seven races – that's certainly not the norm. Could this be the weekend where Roger Penske's group gets back on track? Eric Smith: I'm intrigued by Alex Palou. Now that he's crossed off a victory on an oval via his win in the 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, how many more circle-track victories are to come? He has improved his finishing position in his last four starts at World Wide Technology Raceway, climbing from 20th to ninth to seventh to fourth. At Iowa Speedway, he had two podium finishes in his last three tries, including a runner-up in Race 2 last year. Can he pick up a victory in the July 12-13 doubleheader? Last year at the Milwaukee Mile (Aug. 24) and Nashville Superspeedway (Aug. 31), he had the championship all but locked up, so it's hard to take away anything from those events. Hence why I'm interested to see his performance in the No. 10 Ridgeline Chip Ganassi Racing Honda and if more oval victories are ahead. Scott McLaughlin earned his first oval win at Iowa last year and won later in the season at Milwaukee. I think Palou follows suit, with at least one more oval win in 2025. Arni Sribhen: There's always a driver who has a surprisingly good race at World Wide Technology Raceway, and as competitive as the NTT INDYCAR SERIES' midfield has been, it could be anyone this year. From David Malukas taking a Dale Coyne car to the podium in 2022 and 2023 to first-ever top-10 finishes for Nolan Siegel and Sting Ray Robb in 2024, the tricky 1.25-mile oval has shown the ability to reward drivers who stay out of trouble and on the lead lap with a solid haul of points. So, I'll watch drivers such as Santino Ferrucci, Conor Daly and Rinus VeeKay just to see who could be the sleeper of the weekend. Paul Kelly: OK, I'm dancing around the guardrails of this question a bit by looking past the NTT INDYCAR SERIES this weekend at WWTR. The INDY NXT by Firestone race Sunday afternoon intrigues the hell out of me for one reason: What will Dennis Hauger do in the first oval race of his life? Hauger appears to be one of the strongest INDYCAR SERIES prospects in the INDYCAR development series in the last decade, as he has won four of the first five races this season. All those events have taken place on road and street courses, where Hauger learned his trade in European and global single-seater racing. But ovals are an entirely different animal, with necessary skills that can't be replicated in a simulator or by watching YouTube videos. Hauger was second-fastest in testing this week at Iowa during his first experience on a circle track, so he looks poised to perform in his first oval race this Sunday in the shadow of the Gateway Arch. If he dominates this race the way he has most of the season, Hauger's label as a can't-miss INDYCAR SERIES prospect will be all but secured. recommended

2026 Nissan Sentra: Everything We Know
Nissan isn't giving up on small cars. Even though the tiny Versa is rumored to be on the chopping block, the company is currently working on a brand-new version of the Sentra in an attempt to dethrone compact sedan staples like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The current version of the Sentra won't survive past the current 2025 model year, which means a new one should arrive sooner rather than later. Expect it before the end of the year with an on-sale date of 2026. We've already seen the spy photos and heard many of the rumors, but here's everything you need to know about Nissan's next compact sedan. Many of the cues we've already seen on SUVs like the Kicks and Murano , as well as the upcoming Leaf , should trickle down to the compact sedan. Based on the spy photos and teasers we've already seen, the new Sentra will look much sharper—and it could be slightly longer than the current car. The compact sedan will have a new face highlighted by the brand's latest angular headlight treatment. A light bar should run across the hood line just above the V-shaped grille (though, don't call it a V-Motion grille ). What Kind of Technology Will It Have? 2025 Nissan Murano Interior Photo by: Nissan If you've been in any of Nissan's latest SUVs, the Sentra's interior should look familiar. We expect a streamlined, screen-heavy design with a few touch-capacitive controls. Don't worry, though, Nissan won't ditch buttons entirely. The company's latest products do still have centralized volume knobs and a few tactile controls. The Sentra's current 7.0- and 8.0-inch touchscreen displays should both grow in size, and Nissan will undoubtedly offer a digital instrument cluster to go with it. The company currently offers dual 12.3-inch screens in most of its cars, which should carry over to the Sentra. What Engine Will the New Sentra Have? The current Nissan Sentra has a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine making 149 horsepower, and we don't expect much to change. The base model will likely keep its 2.0-liter engine, with minor upgrades in power and efficiency. That said, the Rogue's turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine could also carry over. Nissan has also been vocal about its lack of hybrids. The company could remedy that with its next-generation Sentra. Even though the automaker doesn't currently offer a hybrid powertrain in the US, Nissan does have a range of e-Power hybrids in Japan that could make their way Stateside—or at least, a version of those powertrains. The Sentra spy photos show a prototype with tailpipes, which leads us to believe that the Sentra won't go all-electric, as others have speculated. In fact, we don't expect Nissan to offer an electric version at all. The new Sentra will likely hit the market with a naturally aspirated gas engine and a hybrid option. Nissan Sentra teaser Photo by: Nissan What Will the New Sentra Compete Against? Even though the 2026 Sentra may grow in size, it will remain in the compact sedan space. That will put it up against current competitors like the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Kia K4, and Toyota Corolla. How Much Will the New Sentra Cost? Don't expect the 2026 Sentra to get a major price hike. The current Sentra starts at just $22,730 for the base SV model, while even the most expensive trim—the SR Midnight Edition—is only $26,425. As a brand-new model, the 2026 Sentra will undoubtedly see a price increase over the current version. We wouldn't be surprised to see a base price of around $25,000. The Sentra could even move production from Mexico to the US to avoid President Trump's proposed tariffs. That said, we expect the new Sentra to remain competitive with the Honda Civic in terms of price, which starts at just over $25,000 for the 2025 model year. When Will We See It? Nissan has already confirmed that the 2026 Sentra will debut later this year before going on sale sometime in 2025.
