The latest electric car by Xiaomi, the YU7 SUV, has created a hype within the Chinese car market since more than 240,000 bookings were reserved in just 18 hours of it hitting the markets officially. The figures indicate the mounting momentum for the tech giant's push within the electric mobility segment, barely a year after it launched its first-ever vehicle, the SU7 sedan.
Orders flood in as Xiaomi's EV strategy gains traction
According to reports from Car News China, Xiaomi received 200,000 refundable pre-orders for the YU7 within the first three minutes of launch. That figure surged to 289,000 within the hour, with more than 240,000 customers converting their interest into confirmed purchases shortly after.
Buyers in China could choose from three ordering options: a standard pre-order that finalizes after a week, a non-refundable instant order, or a now-unavailable "priority delivery" option that guaranteed early access to the vehicle. The overwhelming response marks a significant leap for a company best known for smartphones and consumer electronics.

Launched in May 2025, the Xiaomi YU7 takes various styling cues from the previous SU7 sedan, as well as high-end SUVs like the Porsche Macan and Ferrari Purosangue. The YU7 is available both in single- and dual-motor options. The entry model rides on rear-wheel drive, while the dual-motor variant is equipped with all-wheel drive, producing a combined power of 288kW and 528Nm.
According to the CLTC test cycle, the YU7 delivers rival driving range numbers: 835 km for the rear-wheel-drive Standard version with a 96.3kWh battery, 760 km for the all-wheel-drive Pro model with the same battery, and 770 km for the top-of-the-line AWD Max, which receives a bigger 101.7kWh battery pack.
Priced from 253,500 yuan (approximately ₹ 30 lakh), the YU7 beats the starting price of China's Tesla Model Y by a margin of nearly 10,000 yuan, and thus becomes an attractive value-based product in the mid-premium EV SUV category. Xiaomi CEO William Lu has confirmed the company's plans to expand its electric vehicle offerings worldwide in the next few years. The company aims to establish up to 10,000 retail outlets outside China by 2029 as it scales its automotive operations. While specific markets remain unannounced, Xiaomi's plans signal clear global intent.
Interestingly, the SU7's success also found endorsement from outside China. Ford CEO Jim Farley earlier admitted he had been driving a Xiaomi SU7 imported to the U.S., praising the vehicle's performance and build quality.
With a growing product portfolio and unprecedented early demand, Xiaomi appears to be accelerating quickly in a crowded EV race — with eyes firmly on global roads.

Europe, China agree to take action on climate change during Beijing summit
China and the European Union have issued a joint call to action on climate change during an otherwise tense bilateral summit in Beijing on Thursday riven with major disagreements over trade and the war in Ukraine. The two economic juggernauts issued a joint statement on climate change, urging more emission cuts and greater use of green technology and affirming their support for the Paris Climate Agreement as well as calling for strong action at the upcoming COP30 climate summit in Brazil. In the fluid and turbulent international situation today, it is crucial that all countries, notably the major economies, maintain policy continuity and stability and step up efforts to address climate change, the joint statement said. Their climate agreement was a silver lining on a stormy day where European leaders demanded a more balanced relationship with China in talks with President Xi Jinping. They highlighted trade in their opening remarks, calling for concrete progress to address Europe's yawning trade deficit with China. As our cooperation has deepened, so have the imbalances, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. We have reached an inflection point. Rebalancing our bilateral relation is essential. Spiritual circuits to gain as India opens doors to Chinese tourists
The Indian tourism sector has cheered the government's move to resume issuing visas to Chinese nationals after a hiatus of five years, while calling for 'concentrated efforts' to attract tourists from the neighbouring country, who had formed 27 per cent of the total foreign tourist footfall to India in 2019. 'It is a good move. China is one of our major trade partners, and tourism, which fosters people to people interaction, could lead to greater cooperation and understanding. But mere liberalisation of the visa regime is not enough. There should be a concentrated effort to create and actively promote itineraries and experiences geared to attract Chinese tourists,' said Ajay Prakash, vice president of the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH). India had received around 300,000 Chinese tourists in 2019, after which the Covid-19 pandemic prompted countries to close borders. 'Chinese tourists accounted for nearly 27 per cent of total foreign tourist arrivals to India in 2019, and we are very glad to welcome this move from the government as China is an important source market for the country,' said Ravi Gosain, president of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), which has been pushing for this for the past three years. In 2018, a survey conducted by and Chinese International Travel Monitor, said that Delhi and Mumbai were the top most visited Indian cities for Chinese tourists. However, the Taj Mahal in Agra took the cake as the most favoured site. 'Chinese tourists mostly used to visit in big groups and enjoyed the variety of experiences that India offers. The golden triangle, made up of Delhi, Jaipur and Agra, was among the most sought after tours from these groups,' said a tour operator who did not wish to be named. Now, with the evolution of spiritual tourism in the country, the Buddhist spiritual corridors coming up in Bihar, connecting the ancient Vishnupad and Mahabodhi temples, there will be heightened interest from the Chinese traveller, say industry experts. 'With regional tourism now regaining momentum post-Covid, we believe the restoration of visas for Chinese tourists is critical to revive inbound growth,' Gosain added. The Embassy of India in China announced on Wednesday that Chinese nationals can apply for Indian visas from Thursday (July 24, 2025) after completing an online application and obtaining an appointment at the Indian Embassy in Beijing and the consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou. This move comes on the heels of China resuming the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra in June this year.

The visa route to normalcy
India's move to resume tourist visas for Chinese nationals after a gap of five years due to the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is another step that should help normalise relations between the two sides. It follows the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the first major outcome of efforts by India and China to rebuild their relationship and facilitate people-to-people exchanges following the understanding last October to end the face-off in Ladakh. The latest decision comes against the backdrop of anger in India over China's overt support for Pakistan during the four days of hostilities triggered by Operation Sindoor, Beijing beginning construction of the world's largest hydropower dam on the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra, and concerns related to China curbing the exports of rare earth materials, fertilisers and specialised equipment needed for Indian manufacturing units. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met last October, they decided to adopt a two-pronged approach aimed at normalising ties and addressing the long-standing border dispute that has led to several face-offs on the LAC in recent years. These measures, including the revival of several mechanisms, are crucial for addressing the trust deficit created by the standoff in Ladakh. Moreover, both sides continue to have some 50,000 troops stationed in proximity to the LAC, and de-escalation remains a pressing matter. New Delhi seems to have made a realistic assessment about conducting negotiations with Beijing while addressing the contradiction of raising strategic issues, and simultaneously ensuring that the overall relationship does not take a hit and lead to other issues, especially for the economy. This also comes amidst great global churn that have rendered older alignments irrelevant. This is indeed the right approach. India must negotiate with self-interest in mind. Keeping in mind the size and might of China today and the uncertainty unleashed by the policies of the Trump administration in the US, it is best to engage rather than take a confrontationist approach. India needs to buy time to build its strategic and economic reserves, rather than obsess about what China does in the immediate neighbourhood. For sure, China's presence in the backyard is a concern, but this should not limit India's vision of the bigger picture, which should be centred on managing peace on the border and growing the economy.
