By: FMT Reporters Text Size: PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional should support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming Sabah polls since Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional have already announced their own alliance, says a PAS leader. PAS deputy election director Annuar Musa claimed that the PH-BN alliance was an indication that the federal government coalition aims to dominate Sabah's political landscape. Annuar, a former Umno secretary-general, also said the now-defunct Muafakat Nasional pact between Umno and PAS had believed that the local coalitions in Sabah and Sarawak should be supported rather than competed with. 'I hope that PN will consider supporting GRS. In fact, if necessary, we could study the option of contesting under the GRS banner or even stay out of the state elections. After all, GRS used to be part of PN as well,' he said in a Facebook post, adding that this was his personal view. Tuan Ibrahim says no 'moon' over Sabah Separately, Malaysiakini quoted PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man as saying it was likely that the Islamic party would not be using its iconic 'moon' emblem in the Sabah polls. He said PAS would likely use the emblem of whichever party it teams up with. Tuan Ibrahim also mooted a grand coalition involving PN and local parties, such as GRS and Warisan, to take on BN-PH at the polls. Earlier, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the BN-PH alliance did not mean that the two coalitions did not want to work with local parties. On Friday, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said the party was ready to contest in the elections on its own if PH and BN have finalised their decision to cooperate for the state polls. However, PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim expressed optimism today that PH, BN and GRS could agree on an election pact. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PAS leaders slam Anwar's immunity bid in civil lawsuit as anti-reform

SENIOR leaders of PAS have strongly rebuked Prime Minister (PM) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over his bid for immunity in a civil lawsuit brought against him by former research assistant Muhammed Yusoff Rawther, who has accused the PM of sexual assault. PAS Pahang information chief Ustaz Aireroshairi Roslan and PAS Youth deputy chief Ustaz Mohd Hafez Sabri condemned the move as a betrayal of Anwar's reformist rhetoric and an attempt to evade accountability. Hafez asserted that no one, including the PM, should be above the law. He criticised Anwar for suing other politicians such as Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim and Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, who faced their lawsuits openly while Anwar seeks to avoid the same process. 'This undermines the rule of law and the credibility of national leadership,' Hafez said. Aireroshairi described Anwar's immunity bid as a sign of 'weakness and fear' of the judicial process, arguing it contradicts the principles of democracy and justice. He noted that the alleged incident occurred on Sept 2, 2018, when Anwar was a private citizen, not PM, making his claim to immunity inappropriate. 'This is a legal manoeuvre to escape accountability,' Harakahdaily quoted Aireroshairi as saying, pointing to Yusoff's polygraph test at Bukit Aman, which found him truthful, followed by charges against him for drug and firearm offences, raising concerns of targeted oppression. PAS Youth Malaysia proposed that Anwar withdraw his immunity application, cooperate fully with the judicial system, and support the creation of a National Leadership Ethics Commission to ensure transparency. 'If innocent, prove it in court. If guilty, seek forgiveness for justice,' Hafez urged, emphasising that true reform requires leaders to face accountability head-on. The controversy has sparked calls for Malaysians to demand transparency, with PAS leaders insisting justice must apply equally to all, especially those in power. — May 31, 2025 Main photo credit: Sinar Harian

PAS over the moon with Cleopatra joining party; could Siti Kasim be next?

SO social media influencer and activist Nur Fathiah Syazwana Shaharuddin who is better known as Cleopatra has officially joined Islamist party PAS on May 31. Reason cited? The need to provide a better future for her children. In a Facebook post, PAS' Muslimat Wing noted that Cleopatra submitted her application to wing chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh. Nuridah said the wing has long remained committed to championing the welfare of vulnerable groups such as the poor, people with disabilities, the elderly, single mothers and orphans. 'Cleopatra's entry into PAS is seen as a strategic move to strengthen women's political engagement in Malaysia and to further the cause of community welfare,' it justified. A single mother and entrepreneur, Cleopatrah also founded women's and community rights group called the Hetero Action Women Alliance (HAWA). This move was widely discussed on social media as highlighted by a post on X by capik (@syfqanwar). He sarcastically labelled it the 'most important transfer this century'. Paling random Cleopatra masuk PAS. Transfer yang paling penting abad ini. — capik (@syfqanwar) June 1, 2025 Given that many people apply to join PAS, including high profile celebrities, so what's so special about Cleopatra's application? Could it be because she has been subject to all manner of juicy gossip? In 2024, the 31-year-old was forced to deny that she had tied the knot with former deputy inspector-general of police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Zinin in Thailand after a purported marriage certificate went public (which was later confirmed by the authorities to be fake). Or perhaps it is because Cleopatra stood as an independent candidate for the Batu parliamentary seat in 15th General Election (GE15). Alas, her popularity online did not translate into votes as she lost her deposit with a measly 628 votes. It was then cheekily suggested by some netizens that perhaps the next person to join PAS would be fire brand lawyer Siti Kasim! The poster said such an occurrence would indicate a totally warped reality involving different multiverses (alluding to Marvel Studio's multiverse concept). But why not? Like Cleopatra, Siti Kasim also lost her deposit contesting the 10-corner Batu seat contest by garnering just 653 votes. Given her outspoken views on women's rights (among various issues), Siti Kasim can also be described as a social activist who fits the Islamist party's stated vision mission in championing 'vulnerable groups'. Certainly, it would be massive coup for PAS if it is able to rope in the legal eagle who has previously had many run-ins with the Islamist party. It would mark a complete U-turn on the stated principles of the lawyer with colourful hair-dos. Meanwhile, Cleopatra's reason for joining PAS was roundly mocked by some. Since when the welfare of children is used as justification for joining a political party, wondered one commenter. Another commenter claimed that the move was seen as a sure way to get into the Dewan Rakyat. With a seat secured – possibly in Kedah or Kelantan – Cleopatra would be entitled to a pension, thus securing the future of her kids. As cheekily suggested, the entry of 31-year-old Cleopatra into the party was being celebrated by the turbaned males in PAS. This poses the question if Siti Kasim's joining PAS would generate a similar reception. Safe to say, it would be highly unlikely for it can be imagined that the vocal human rights activist would swear 'over my dead body'! – June 3, 2025
