Chief Secretary stresses on coordinated efforts to make Andhra Pradesh drug-free
Speaking at the second quarterly Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD) meeting held on Tuesday, Mr. Vijayanand said the Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE), formed by the government, was actively working to curb ganja cultivation in tribal areas of North Andhra Pradesh.
He said EAGLE officers were creating awareness among tribal communities and encouraging them to shift to alternative crops such as coffee and silver oak, while also providing them with the necessary training and support.
Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta, who joined the meeting virtually, highlighted the need to strengthen inter-State check posts to curb drug and ganja smuggling.
Inspector General of Police and EAGLE head Ake Ravi Krishna gave an overview of several operations including Operation Garuda, Operation Safe Campus Zone, Garuda 2.0, and Operation Chaitanya. These initiatives aim to curb the sale of unprescribed drugs in medical shops, check smuggling through trains, and eliminate ganja cultivation in Alluri Sitharama Raju district.
Principal Secretary (GAD) Mukesh Kumar Meena, Special Chief Secretary (Medical and Health) Krishna Babu, Principal Secretary (Home) Kumar Vishwajeet, Visakhapatnam Range DIG Gopinath Jetty, EAGLE SPs Nagesh Babu and Rajan Kumar, and officials from DRI, NCB, and IB also participated virtually.

Man guns down 25 dogs, animal activists outraged
1 2 Jhunjhunu: A gruesome incident in Kumawas village, located in the Nawalgarh area of Jhunjhunu district, has sparked outrage by animal activists after at least two individuals were filmed shooting and killing more than 25 dogs. The horrific act was committed on Aug 2 and 3 but it wasn't until a video surfaced on social media on Wednesday that local police acted. The video footage shows two individuals on a motorcycle chasing and firing at stray dogs with a gun, leaving their bodies scattered across village streets and fields. Another person on a second bike is partially seen in the same video following and filming the duo on the first bike. It was unclear if the individual on second bike was complicit in the crime. Preliminary police probe later identified one of the accused as Shyochand Bavariya, a resident of Dumra village. Local police have registered a case against Bavariya under multiple sections of the Animal Cruelty Act and the Arms Act. The incident has sparked outrage among animal lovers and local residents, who are calling for strict action against the perpetrators. Superintendent of Police, Jhunjhunu, Brijesh Jyoti Upadhyay confirmed the video's authenticity and dispatched head constable Shubhkaran to the village for further investigation. "We are aware of the video showing a person shooting at dogs in Kumawas village. Immediate steps were taken to investigate the matter," Upadhyay said.

Kanpur cops launch Op Mahakal against land mafia, extortionists
Kanpur: In a major crackdown on land mafia and extortion networks, the Kanpur Commissionerate Police on Tuesday launched Operation Mahakal, a month-long campaign aimed at identifying and taking legal action against those involved in illegal land grabbing and criminal intimidation. Commissioner of Police Akhil Kumar formally inaugurated the initiative, which will unfold in two phases — complaint collection and verification in the first phase, followed by concrete action in the second. The first FIR under this operation was registered at the Jajmau police station on Wednesday. The complainant, Sahib Anwar, a resident of Jajmau, alleged that unknown individuals had defamed him on social media and demanded money, prompting police to begin investigations under the new operation. The campaign targets both direct offenders and their systemic enablers. A notable feature of the initiative is the focus on government employees who allegedly aid such criminal networks. "The operation will focus on two categories," said CP Akhil Kumar. "The first includes individuals or organised groups who forcibly occupy private or government land, buildings, or plots using fraud, threats, or coercion for commercial gain. The second category includes white-collar individuals — especially govt officials— who misuse their official positions to support such criminal activities or exploit the public by invoking fear of legal consequences for personal benefit." Departments under scrutiny include police, revenue, Kanpur Development Authority, municipal corporation, transport department, and registry offices. The police have appealed to the public to come forward with credible complaints, assuring swift and strict action against all involved, irrespective of their influence or position.

Charred body of 20-year-old college girl found at her home in Odisha
The charred body of a 20-year-old college girl was found in her house in Kendrapara district of Odisha on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). When the parents of the girl returned from hospital, they found smoke billowing from their house locked from inside. After they broke open the door, they found the girl charred. The victim was a final year undergraduate student. The girl's father alleged that she had been in a relationship with a youth for the past two years and had taken her own life after being blackmailed by her ex-boyfriend, with whom she had broken up six months ago. The matter took a controversial turn when the girl's father alleged that the Pattamundai Rural Police Station had discouraged his daughter from filing a complaint against the boy for blackmail. Villagers claimed that timely police intervention could have prevented the mental distress that ultimately drove her to take such an extreme step. Kendrapada Superintendent of Police Siddharth Kataria, who visited the house where girl's body was found, said the issue of alleged suicide and negligence by the local police would be probed thoroughly. Police filed a case under Sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) under the BNS. However, no suicide note was recovered. Police said further clarity would come after the postmortem report was received. Congress to protest Meanwhile, the Congress has announced a week-long campaign in protest against the increasing incidents of violence against women in the State. From August 8, Congress workers will gherao the office of the Director General of Police in Cuttack, demanding the arrest of the three culprits involved in the Balanga minor girl burning incident. State Congress president Bhakta Charan Das has appealed to party workers and citizens to join the protest in large numbers.
