Andrew Garfield & Focus Features Nearing Deals To Join Paul Greengrass Peasant Revolt Movie ‘The Rage': Cannes Market
EXCLUSIVE: In one of the bigger deals being thrashed out during the Cannes market, we hear that Focus Features is working on a domestic pact in the $11M range for Paul Greengrass' peasant revolt movie The Rage.
Two-time Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield is now in active negotiations to join the movie in the lead role, taking over from Matthew McConaughey.

The film is set during the Peasants' Revolt, a major uprising that took part across large parts of England in 1381 in response to socio-economic and political tensions and high taxation. Should a deal get done, which we understand is likely, Garfield would play a farmer who becomes the leader of the revolt. It has been speculated that the character could be based on the legendary Wat Tyler, who led the uprising before being killed by forces loyal to King Richard, though this is unconfirmed.
Garfield's English background (the dual UK-U.S. national was raised in the UK) makes him a good fit for the project. Between Spider-Man and Hacksaw Ridge, The Social Network and tick tick…BOOM! he has long proven able to mix it between action and prestige roles that connect with audiences and garner significant box office. He is coming off romantic drama We Live in Time, which took close to $60M worldwide, and next will be seen opposite Julia Roberts in Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt.

Oscar nominee Greengrass, well known for the Bourne franchise and such movies as Captain Phillips and United 93, is scripting the project. Jason Blum is producing through Blumhouse Productions, with Greg Goodman, Joanna Kaye and Greengrass. CAA Media Finance is repping domestic. FilmNation is selling international. Focus has been into the project for a while and began talks at EFM.
Blum and Goodman recently teamed on Greengrass' upcoming movie The Lost Bus for Apple.
Focus is coming off a busy and lucrative awards season thanks to Conclave and Nosferatu. It's at the Cannes Film Festival with Wes Anderson's Phoenician Scheme and The History of Sound and there are high hopes later this year for movies such as Hamnet, Bugonia and the next Downton Abbey installment.
Reps and dealmakers declined to comment.

I Know Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale Is Going To Be Emotional, But The First Footage Had A Surprise Moment I Didn't Expect

There are some sequels fans just want to dive into as soon as possible, but I don't think Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is one of them. At least, that's my subjective opinion about this upcoming 2025 movie schedule entry, because it's going to bring creator Julian Fellowes' iconic British drama to a resounding close. Now the first footage has finally released to the public, I'm doubling down on my feelings, as it features an emotional scene with a typically stoic member of the Crawley family that feels sure to bring the house down. So what is the scene in Focus Features' upcoming drama? It's one where Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) plants a kiss on one of those very recognizable front walls. After all of the ups, downs, and everything in-between experienced in that stately manor, the teaser continues to sum it all up in a phrase we've seen since Downton Abbey 3's title reveal: 'It's time to say goodbye.' I just don't want to, despite knowing better going into this trailer. I let myself get caught up in beautiful little glimpses of Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) showing up to an event dressed in her finest, the return of Julian Levinson (Paul Giamatti) being marked by his trademark ebullience, and a bunch of the family showing up to a horse racing event. But then came that moment where the Paddington franchise star bid farewell to his familial home. A scene that may have been in the works for longer than we thought. Before doing the required deep dive to revisit Downton Abbey's previous adventures through my Peacock subscription, the vague recollection that the Crawley's beautiful home has always been on the verge of bankruptcy has always been on my mind. And for a while, one year in particular on the calendar has stuck out as a potential stumbling block to the family fortune - 1929. Seeing as that's when the American financial system suffered its first major crisis, and part of the money that's kept Downton afloat is from Cora's side of the family. Elizabeth McGovern's Cora, the American fixture in the ITV hit, has been the connection to various lifelines, for better or worse. With this movie being announced as taking place in 1930, the moment has passed, and consequences will start to take shape - with plenty of Downton Abbey 3 cast members still waiting to take their places. Which now introduces the possibility that Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale may see her brother Julius coming to collect in some manner or another. Let's not forget Paul Giamatti's cryptic Downton 3 tease where he said he does 'something of real significance.' I think even Barrows' former foe Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) would begrudgingly admit that this is making the best of a sad situation. In either of these scenarios, the Crawley era of Downton Abbey looks to be at its end. The real questions left to answer are where will its inhabitants go, who will be the new owner, and is it really for the best that Matthew Goode won't be appearing in The Grand Finale? Save your energy, and your tears, as we've got until September 12th to think of what to say about the end of this pop culture favorite.

AppleTV+ series starring Liev Schreiber to film in Pittsburgh
Another streaming series is coming to film in the Pittsburgh area. Starring Liev Schreiber of "Ray Donovan," Zazie Beetz of "Deadpool 2" and Stephen Graham of "Adolescence," an untitled AppleTV+ thriller based on Lars Kepler's bestselling "Killer Instinct" book series will start filming in Pittsburgh this summer. The 10-episode series "tells the story of Jonah Lynn (Schreiber), an ex-soldier turned homicide detective who, tired of working the tough streets of Philadelphia, moves to a small town in Western Pennsylvania for a quiet life. But, as the town and his family come under attack from the diabolically cunning serial killer Jurek Walter (Graham), Jonah must protect all that he holds dear," AppleTV+ said in a news release. State leaders tout film production tax credit program The producers are getting $32.4 million in film production tax credits from the Pennsylvania Film Office. The Shapiro administration says the project is expected to create more than 3,500 new jobs and infuse $108 million into Pennsylvania's economy. The Shapiro administration used the news to tout the Pennsylvania Film Production Tax Credit program, saying it has brought more than 100 film projects to the state, generating $967 million in direct expenditures to regional economies and creating jobs for 9,000 people. The program offers a 25% tax credit to productions that spend at least 60% of their total budget in Pennsylvania. AppleTV+ series is latest to film in Pittsburgh The untitled AppleTV+ is the latest to film in western Pennsylvania. "How to Rob a Bank," a new Amazon MGM Studios movie, is looking for paid extras while it's in the area. A Hershey biopic is also currently filming in several communities, turning locations like Bedford Square on the South Side into a scene straight from the 1800s. The Paramount+ show "Mayor of Kingstown," starring Jeremy Renner, has also filmed multiple seasons in the Pittsburgh area and across western Pennsylvania.
