Coronation Street casts new Rovers family led by 90s TV legend

Metro3 days ago
A new era dawns for Coronation Street's signature boozer, with the Rovers Return set to get new owners who are all played by very familiar faces.
Catherine Tyldesley is set to stage a comeback as Eva Price this autumn to take the reins of the iconic TV pub from Jenny Connor (Sally Ann Matthews) but she won't be alone, with new beau Ben Driscoll and his interfering mum Maggie by her side.
Eva and Ben will first appear on-screen in October, when the residents of Weatherfield learn of who will be taking over as publicans of the Rovers.
Eva, who was last seen behind the bar in 2018, will be reunited with sisters Toyah (Georgia Taylor) and Leanne (Jane Danson), but just what has she been up to since her exit?
That is the question.
Stepping into Ben's shoes is Hope Street star Aaron McCusker, who is no stranger to pulling a pint or two given that he plays pub landlord Clint Dunwoody in the BBC One drama, which will return for its fifth series later this year.
Aaron is also known for playing Jamie McGuire in Shameless and for playing Jim Hutton, Freddie Mercury's boyfriend, in the acclaimed 2018 movie Bohemian Rhapsody.
Maggie, meanwhile, will be played by none other than Pauline McLynn, best known for playing Mrs Doyle in Father Ted, Yvonne Cotton in EastEnders and Libby Croker on Shameless.
Ben's two sons and Eva's daughter Suzie will also be joining the cast, with the Price/Driscoll family set to make quite an entrance. More Trending
'We are beyond thrilled that Eva is returning as the landlady of the Rovers, with her new blended family in tow,' said Corrie boss Kate Brooks.
'The Driscolls do not arrive quietly, so expect big drama, explosive secrets and raucous knees ups galore.
'To have actors of Catherine, Aaron and Pauline's considerable calibre at the beating heart of this family is absolutely wonderful, and we can't wait for you to get to know and fall in love with them as much as we have already done. Strap yourselves in, it's going to be an exciting and eventful ride.'

The One Show's Alex Jones confesses parents 'critique' show after every episode

The One Show host has admitted that her parents call her after every episode to give their feedback of her presenting skills or her outfit of choice Alex Jones' parents ring her after each episode of The One Show to critique her performance. Despite the 48-year-old star having chalked up 15 years of experience fronting the BBC One magazine programme, her mum Mary and dad Alun always find a fault - be it Alex needing more makeup or the colour of their daughter's dresses not suiting her. ‌ She told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "Every night. And they won't always have a comment on the show. I mean, Dad, to be fair, doesn't get a word in because there's always Mum, but she'll say things like, 'Yeah, I just thought you needed a bit more blusher tonight.' Thank you for that. ‌ "Or she'll say, 'That colour is not very you.' And I'm like, 'OK, well, three million people were watching, so that's good!' But actually, it's so lovely that they care." It comes after a Strictly Come Dancing star pulls out of show as he makes career announcement. ‌ ‌ Despite Mary and Alun being "picky" about how Alex performed in each episode of The One Show, they more often than not praise their daughter. The TV presenter added: "Sometimes you can feel when it's been a really good show, and nine times out of 10, they reflect that. "They go, 'Oh, that was a good show, wasn't it?'" Alex joked that she knows if a show went well if her parents say an episode was "good". ‌ The star continued: "But they're very picky, so if we get a 'that was a good show' from Mary and Alun, we know we're doing something right." And Alex's dad was thrilled that she and her former The One Show co-host Chris Evans, 59, interviewed The Rolling Stones' Mick Jagger, 82, Keith Richards, 81, the late Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood, 78, for a special episode in November 2012. She recalled: "I remember way back in the early days, Mum and Dad had rung one night, as they do every night after the show, and they went, 'What are you doing tomorrow then?' ‌ "I said, 'Well, the show's a bit different tomorrow. I think we're going to do a special on The Rolling Stones.' "I didn't know... I mean, I knew their names, I knew there were four of them. "My dad nearly collapsed. He was like, 'Sorry, what?' Put her on loudspeaker, Mary. What's she saying?'" Alex joined The One Show in 2010 and co-hosted alongside Jason Manford, 44. She then went on to present the programme with Matt Baker, 47, from 2010 until 2020, and Jermaine Jenas, 42, from 2020 until 2024. Alex now fronts The One Show with Roman Kemp, 32, Vernon Kay, 51, JB Gill, 38, Clara Amfo, 41, and Lauren Laverne, 47.

Gary Lineker ‘can't wait' to host new ITV show The Box after BBC exit

The former footballer, 64, who left the BBC One sports show in May, said he was excited and 'can't wait' to host The Box. In the show, 10 yellow boxes house a celebrity contestant who will be transported to unknown locations, before being released to face whatever game awaits on the other side of the door. Each week two players will face The Duel, a finale in which the loser leaves the competition for good. Lineker, who had presented Match Of The Day since 1999, said an emotional goodbye in an early departure from the broadcaster on May 26. It followed a social media row after he shared a post about Zionism, which featured a depiction of a rat, historically an antisemitic insult. Lineker, who was the BBC's highest-paid presenter, issued an unreserved apology for the social media video he shared, which led to his early exit from the BBC. Lineker was due to host BBC Sport's coverage of the FA Cup in the 2025-26 season. Lineker said: 'I can't wait to host The Box. I've always felt right at home in the box on a football pitch and whilst this is a different proposition, the fundamentals are similar. 'The contestants will have to quickly and masterfully work out how each game works, whilst also trying to get ahead of the competition to take control. 'It's going to be unpredictable and thrilling to watch, and I'm excited that I get to have a front row seat to all the action.' Katie Rawcliffe, director of entertainment, reality and daytime commissioning at ITV, said: 'Gary is the perfect fit for The Box, an entertaining, exhilarating and immersive new format.' Dan Adamson, chief content officer at production company Twofour, added: 'We're delighted to be making The Box with ITV and Seefood TV. 'From the first time we saw those iconic yellow boxes open in an incredible location we were hooked. Now, with Gary on board, we have the ideal master of ceremonies to make this real event telly, he is after all a man who knows what it's like under pressure in the box. 'He's sure to raise the competitive spirit as our cast bursts out of those boxes, into unknown, ambitious and spectacular challenges.' The Box was first launched on TV2 in Norway in January this year. ITV's version of the show will be filmed in the UK later this year and air in 2026. Lineker also co-hosts The Rest Is Football podcast, which moved to internet sports streaming platform DAZN after he left the BBC.

EastEnders fans are all saying the same thing about Ben Mitchell's return

EastEnders fans are thrilled by the announcement Ben Mitchell is returning for a very brief stint – but one thing has left them baffled. It was confirmed yesterday after months of speculation that Max Bowden will reprise his role alongside Ricky Champ's Stuart Highway for a dramatic set of episodes in the autumn. A new picture showed the characters stood alongside Callum Highway (Tony Clay) and Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff), attending the funeral of Highway patriarch Jonno. If mourning his homophobic and estranged father wasn't bad enough for Callum, he's also going to have to come face to face with his husband Ben, who he recently cheated on. Sparks are flying between Callum and Johnny, and that's only bound to continue once the latter returns from his holiday with mum Linda (Kellie Bright). It's only a temporary return for both Max and Ricky, though EastEnders has promised us plenty of turmoil. It is Walford after all! Given Ben is one of the show's biggest legacy characters, continuing the Mitchell name into the next generation, fans are understandably pleased to have him back. Metro reader Lynne Wylie chipped in: 'This is the best news', with @lasagneonmyshoe agreed: 'Best news ever.' They're clearly a devoted Ballum fan, though, adding in parenthesis: 'Apart from the Johnny nonsense of course.' Laura thought that the snap of the four men dressed in their Sunday best was 'such a great picture!', before adding: 'So excited for them to return.' Matt Cooper said: 'About time Ben was back, terrible decision to remove him.' Despite the excitement, a lot of people had questions about just how BBC bosses would facilitate the return of a character who is seemingly behind bars on the other side of the world. Honestly, we don't know. Ben has been locked up in the States since last year. Apparently he's on day release to attend Jonno's funeral, and while we're not experts on the American legal system, it's incredibly unlikely that he'd be shipped to the other side of the world to mourn his father-in-law. But this is soapland, anything goes! 'That's a bit of a stretch isn't it?' laughed Dan on X, and he wasn't alone. 'I'm sure American prison are going to fly their prisoners over seas for a funeral,' agreed JDLeigh. Jake Meyers chipped in a facepalm emoji to say: 'As if they'd let Ben attend. Sure, fly him half way across the world for his father in laws funeral, sounds about right…' @takethe_highway offered a more reasonable explanation, saying: 'He's probably been transferred to a UK prison. If that is the case, there's a likelihood we may see him pop up again in future in the same way Lucas Johnson (Don Gilet) and Rocky Cotton (Brian Conley) have. Ultimately, the biggest question on everybody's lips is: 'Who is Jonno?' Luckily for you, we've got a refresher… Jonno, portrayed by Richard Graham, appeared in just four episodes in 2019. So that's probably why you don't remember him. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) – then engaged to Callum – reached out to him, unaware that he has abused both Callum and Stuart in their childhood. Making himself out to be a changed man, his true colours soon shone through when he fought with Ben and used homophobic language, and then pinned Callum up against a wall. More Trending Jonno was subsequently thrown out of Walford, and upon his return two months later, was surprised to hear that Callum's wedding to Whit' hadn't gone ahead. Callum came out as gay, and a disgusted Jonno accused Ben of turning his son 'into one of them'. Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) dealt a menacing punch, and Jonno threatened to go to the police. The punters in the Queen Vic, including Whitney, all decided to deny seeing Phil attack him. View More » He then left, disowning Callum as he departed.
