RMAF probes Hawk fighter jet safety after runway mishap
KOTA TINGGI: The Royal Malaysian Air Force has launched a safety investigation into its fleet of Hawk fighter jets following an incident in Alor Setar on Tuesday.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the probe began after a Hawk 208 jet skidded off the runway during a landing at Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, Kedah.
"No physical injuries were reported. RMAF has started a thorough investigation to ensure the continued safety of all Hawk jets in service," he said after officiating Boustead Plantations Bhd's Projek Jana Veteran in Telok Sengat here today.
He said the duration of the investigation would depend on the air force's internal assessments.
The RMAF earlier confirmed the incident occurred at 5pm during a landing exercise as part of the 'Opening Gambit' training ahead of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25).
The fighter jet's nose landing gear reportedly malfunctioned during touchdown, but the pilot escaped unhurt.

PLKN 3.0: NS trainees fired up over rare chance to shoot real M16 rifles with live ammunition
KUANTAN, June 4 — A total of 123 trainees in the National Service Training Programme (PLKN) 3.0 Series 2/2025 were seen to be excited with the opportunity to undergo a shooting exercise with real guns like the M16 at the Naval Region Headquarters (MAWILLA) 1 Target Range in Tanjung Gelang here today. National Service Training Department (JLKN) Training Operations Division director, Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Colonel Mazlizan Shaikh Osman said the number was part of the 257 male trainees who participated in the 45-day programme at the 505th Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Pekan. 'We are holding two shooting sessions, today with the Alpha and Bravo companies and tomorrow with the Charlie and Delta companies. 'This training is part of the 70 per cent of military elements applied in the PLKN, apart from shooting practice, we also train them in navigation, survival skills and crossing obstacle courses,' he said at a press conference here today. Mazlizan also said that female PLKN trainees stationed at the 515th Territorial Army Regiment (Askar Wataniah) Camp in Kuala Lumpur will also undergo shooting training and the same basic military module to build discipline, confidence and identity of the young generation as the country's frontliners. 'We are holding training like this because based on past studies, many trainees want to train outdoors and if they are in other locations, they do not have the opportunity to use real weapons. 'The weapon used in the training is the M16 rifle (standard US military rifle) with live ammunition where the trainees are trained to shoot at a distance of 25 metres (m) and 100m in prone, sitting and standing positions,' he said. He said that before practising at the target range, the trainees are first provided with knowledge related to weapons, protocol that is allowed and prohibited when handling weapons to ensure the safety of all present during a drill. A PLKN trainee Aiman Khawarizmi Kamaruddin, 20, from Kota Baru, Kelantan, admitted that he really enjoyed the shooting exercise because it gave him new knowledge and experience. 'This shooting experience is very valuable to me and my friends and gives us exposure on the knowledge of using real weapons,' he said. — Bernama

RMAF must transform to face future threats, says air force chief
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) must embrace transformation as a necessity to meet future challenges, said its chief, General Tan Sri Asghar Khan Goriman Khan. He said all members of the air force must be fully committed to implementing its strategic development plan, Capability Development Plan 2055 (CAP55). "Transformation is no longer an option but a necessity. "CAP55 is our strategic development plan that reflects our aspiration to build a lean, networked RMAF. It encompasses transformation across combat capabilities, logistics, training, intelligence, and future warfare systems. "I urge all members of the RMAF to carry out this plan with strong commitment and transparency. "Remember, CAP55 is not for me, but for the future generations who will safeguard our airspace," he said in a special address in conjunction with the RMAF's 67th anniversary today. Asghar also called for the strengthening of human capital development within the force, citing today's multi-faceted threat environment. "Today, we face multi-dimensional threats: cyber attacks, electronic warfare, autonomous drones, and hybrid conflicts. "Readiness is not just about weaponry, but also mindset. Investment in human capital development must be strengthened. "We need competent pilots, engineers, cyber operators, and leaders who are creative and forward-thinking," he said. Asghar said the RMAF's journey since June 1, 1958, had demonstrated its maturity as a credible and modern force. "This anniversary does not just represent our maturity as a key component of the Armed Forces, but also commemorates the spirit of struggle, sacrifice and unwavering commitment of our air force heroes. "Indeed, a lot has been achieved and we must continue to move forward with greater strength. "We are standing on the shoulders of giants who have paved the way for us. The transformation that we envision must be built on strong discipline, continuous training, dedication, and patriotism." Calling for the highest standards of conduct, Asghar also reminded personnel to uphold the principles of integrity and professionalism. "In realising our transformation goals, we must adhere to good governance, high integrity, and efficient resource management. "Safety must never be compromised. Avoid negligence, follow procedures, and ensure every operation, training, and administrative process is carried out professionally," he said. Asghar also added that a balanced work environment and support for families must be strengthened to enhance morale and performance.
