PKR polls: Fahmi vows to help party strategise for GE16

The Sun16-05-2025

KEPALA BATAS: Planning for the 16th General Election (GE16) and several upcoming state elections (PRN) will be a key priority for PKR Information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is offering himself as a candidate for the Central Leadership Council (MPP) in the 2025–2028 party election.
Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said this would be the first area of focus if he was given the mandate to be part of the MPP, particularly in assisting the 26-year-old party with preparations such as the manifesto.
'We definitely need to start planning our steps towards GE16. In fact, we know that state elections in Sabah, Melaka and Johor are also approaching. So the first task for not just PKR, but many other parties will be preparing for these elections.
'This includes manifesto preparation, groundwork to engage the grassroots, connecting with the people, solving issues and understanding the policies that need to be prioritised. These will be among my main focuses,' he said.
He was speaking to reporters after attending the 'Jelajah Kita Keadilan' programme at Dewan Tok Mat Yahoo here tonight, which was also attended by the party's secretary-general, Dr Fuziah Salleh.
Fahmi also advised all candidates to campaign healthily by articulating their arguments and views, which in turn would help strengthen party unity in supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's reform and development agenda.
Commenting on the contest between Nurul Izzah Anwar and Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli for the post of deputy president, Fahmi described it as a contest between two figures with a long history and who have been with the party since its inception.
'I see both have their own approaches, their own styles in conveying their vision to the delegates—some use statistics, some evoke memories, use slides to argue their case, build the mood, spirit and struggle.
'I believe both figures have their own strengths and supporters. Nurul Izzah has served as vice-president since 2010 while Rafizi played a key role in reviving the party, especially after the Sheraton Move,' he said.
Nonetheless, Fahmi said party president Anwar hoped to see both figures continue contributing to the party, regardless of the outcome of the May 23 election, and that both Nurul Izzah and Rafizi have expressed their commitment to return to the grassroots to keep driving PKR forward even if they lost the race for the number two post.
Fahmi also noted a consistent trend in PKR where the party leadership would find a way to involve capable individuals in party affairs or leadership roles if they were believed to have the potential to serve the party and connect with the people.
The PKR National Congress, including the Youth and Women's congresses, is scheduled to be held from May 21 to 24 in Johor Bahru, with voting day set for May 23.

Abdul Raof Mokhtar named acting Kota Raja Umno chief after Tengku Zafrul's exit

SHAH ALAM, June 11 — The Kota Raja Umno division chief position is now held by Abdul Raof Mokhtar, said Selangor Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin. He said that Abdul Raof, who is currently the deputy chief of the division, will act in the position until the next party election. He said this followed the resignation of Kota Raja Umno division chief, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who also expressed his intention to join PKR on May 30. 'Automatically, the deputy chief of the (Kota Raja) Umno Division will act in the position of division chief. We will send an official letter to Umno president (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) for the matter to be brought to the Supreme Council meeting,' he said. He said this at a press conference after opening the Wanita, Youth and Puteri Selangor Umno 2025 Delegation meeting at Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) in Shah Alam, which was attended by 1,248 delegates from the state party's wings last night. Megat Zulkarnain announced that his friendship with Tengku Zafrul is still as usual, and also called on Selangor Umno to continue working and moving forward. On May 30, Tengku Zafrul, minister of investment, trade, and industry, announced his resignation from Umno via a statement on Facebook, stating that he had sent a letter of resignation to the Umno leadership on the same date. Tengku Zafrul, through a letter sent to the Umno leadership, expressed his intention to resign as a member of the Supreme Council, Kota Raja Umno Division Chief and Umno member. — Bernama

Zuraida's RM10m bond case: Federal Court to hear PKR's appeal bid on June 24

PUTRAJAYA, June 11 — The Federal Court will hear on June 24 an application by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to seek leave to appeal against a Court of Appeal's decision which reduced the bond payment to be made by the party's former vice-president, Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin, in a breach of party bond case. PKR's lawyer, Navpreet Singh, when contacted, told Bernama that the hearing will proceed via online proceedings. 'A final case management was held before the Federal Court deputy registrar Husna Dzulkifly today, he said, adding that all parties have updated the court pertaining to compliance with pre-hearing directives relating to their submissions. The case revolves around a civil suit filed by former PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, on behalf of the party, claiming that Zuraida, who was then the Ampang Member of Parliament, had breached the bond she had signed. The terms of the bond, among others, required Zuraida to pay PKR RM10 million within seven days of winning an election on the PKR ticket, should she resign from the party, join another political party, or become an independent representative. In June 2023, the High Court ruled in favour of the party and ordered Zuraida to pay the RM10 million, with the court finding the bond to be valid and enforceable. However, in December last year, the Court of Appeal agreed with the High Court that there was a breach of bond but reduced the bond amount to RM100,000, citing that the RM10 million is not a reasonable amount of compensation. This prompted PKR to file a leave to appeal. In her defence, Zuraida contended that she was forced to sign the bond with the party to be able to stand for election as a candidate in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018. The Federal Court will now decide whether PKR can proceed with its appeal against the Court of Appeal's decision. In civil cases, litigants must obtain leave before they can proceed with their appeals in the Federal Court. — Bernama

Merit alone won't work in multiracial Malaysia, says Fuziah

Deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister Fuziah Salleh said terms like 'tolerance' fall short in capturing what a harmonious society should aim for. PETALING JAYA : A senator has argued that a purely merit-based system may be impractical in Malaysia, suggesting that a proportional approach would better reflect the country's multiracial make-up. Fuziah Salleh, the deputy domestic trade and cost of living minister, said merit should be applied with consideration for ethnic representation, adding that opportunities and benefits should be distributed in proportion to the population. 'For example, if 60% of the population belongs to a certain ethnic group, then merit should be applied within that proportion,' she said during yesterday's recording of BBC World Questions at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Centre. Fuziah, who is also the PKR secretary-general, said her party's constitution already reflects this principle by mandating representation from all major communities. She was responding to a question on how Malaysia can reconcile its secular and democratic values with the continued dominance of race-based policies that favour the Malay-Muslim majority. She said that PKR continues to promote a needs-based policy approach, a shift introduced by party president Anwar Ibrahim more than a decade ago to replace race-based affirmative action. 'It's not about race, it's about need. 'We're trying to educate people that benefits are not a right simply because they belong to a certain group. They should be based on socioeconomic status.' She said PKR also conducts regular internal training sessions to help members understand why policies such as property discounts should be based on need rather than ethnicity. 'Why should a high-income Malay receive the same 10% discount as a poor Indian? We need to reorient our thinking, away from race-based entitlement,' she said. Fuziah also expressed hope that her party's push for needs-based policies would eventually be reflected in national government policies as well. On the topic of national unity, she said terms like 'tolerance' fall short in capturing what a harmonious society should aim for. 'I don't like the word 'tolerance'. It implies merely putting up with each other. It should be about respect, understanding, and embracing what each community stands for,' she said. Malaysia has implemented race-based affirmative action policies since the introduction of the New Economic Policy in 1971, aimed at improving the socioeconomic position of the Bumiputeras – primarily the Malays and indigenous groups. While these policies have helped reduce poverty and increase Malay participation in the economy, critics argue that they have created systemic inequalities by sidelining poorer individuals from other ethnic communities.
