Datke directed NMC to prioritise cleaning operations in areas like Hatti Nala, Rahatekarwadi Nala, Jamdar School vicinity, Lendi Talao stretch, and the drain near Raman Science Centre. "Water stagnation and garbage blockages in these drains have become a recurring nightmare for citizens. Immediate action must be taken before heavy rains arrive," he told officials, warning of public backlash if negligence continues.
The meeting also exposed broader civic failures. BJP city president and former Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari criticised the administration for disbanding a zonal desilting team that earlier handled stormwater drains in narrow Central Nagpur lanes. "Now a centralised team is overburdened, and our zones are neglected," he said. Tiwari also criticised the delay in procuring a Rs1.5 crore 'octopus' sewer machine sanctioned during his tenure, lamenting that NMC continues to rent equipment instead.
"Public suffering has peaked, and there's no grievance redressal in the absence of elected corporators," said Datke. "For three years, civic basics are being ignored. If issues aren't resolved within a month, we will take to the streets," he warned.

Delhi Minister Ashish Sood leads Tiranga Yatra in Janakpuri
Delhi education minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday led a Tiranga Yatra in his Janakpuri Assembly constituency, which saw participation of hundreds of school children and youth, all rallying behind one common goal - to foster national unity, promote respect for the national flag and strengthen bonds of brotherhood across the country. The march, which began from C1 Block and concluded at Dabri Chowk, saw enthusiastic participation of school children, local residents, and political leaders. Accompanying him was BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat, along with hundreds of local residents waving the national flag in a symbolic show of unity and national pride. Speaking at the event, Minister Ashish Sood said, 'All the religious, social, and political organizations of Janakpuri, along with these young children who want to contribute to a Viksit Delhi, a Viksit Janakpuri, and a Viksit Bharat, participated in the Tiranga Yatra to fulfill their duty towards the nation.' The rally reflected a broader message of development and civic responsibility, with children and youth prominently leading the walk, holding aloft the Tricolour and chanting patriotic slogans. Lawmaker Kamaljeet Sehrawat also interacted with residents along the route, encouraging civic participation and awareness. The event concluded with a brief address at the Dabri Chowk, where leaders reiterated their commitment to community-driven development and nation-building. Earlier on Sunday, in a spirited display of patriotism and youth energy, Ashish Sood flagged off the grand 'Tiranga Run' from Thyagraj Stadium. The event, organised by the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi, witnessed the participation of 7,900 students and youth who ran from Thyagraj Stadium to the National War Memorial, holding the Tricolour high in honour of India's freedom fighters and martyrs. India will be celebrating its 79th Independence Day on August 15, marking the day when it gained freedom from the British in 1947. The main function is held at the Red Fort, where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag.

‘Tampered' voter list: ‘Dissolve Lok Sabha,' Abhishek demands fresh elections
Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Tuesday demanded the dissolution of the Lok Sabha and fresh elections, alleging large-scale irregularities in the country's voter lists. Speaking at Kolkata airport before leaving for Delhi, he accused the BJP of benefiting from a 'tampered' electoral roll and questioned the Election Commission of India's ['ECI's] integrity. 'In one EPIC number, there are multiple voters. And this is not data provided by any political party, this is ECI's data. Why should the BJP defend the ECI?' Abhishek asked, challenging the ruling party to explain the alleged discrepancies. Abhishek said the issue of faulty voter lists was not limited to Opposition-ruled states. 'It cannot be that your voter list was all clear and Bengal's is faulty,' he asserted, calling it a 'national problem' and accusing BJP of selectively targeting certain states. 'If there is any irregularity in the voter list, then dissolve the entire Lok Sabha. Let all MPs, including the Prime Minister and Home Minister, resign and call for fresh polls,' he said. He also demanded 'criminal proceedings against the former CEC' if tampering was proven. 'BJP came to power because of 'vote chori'. If needed, I will also resign. Let there be fresh elections,' Abhishek declared, adding that any Special Investigation Report (SIR) on the matter should cover the whole country, not just selective states. Referring to Monday's protest in Delhi, during which MPs from the INDIA bloc — including TMC leaders — were detained, he said, 'If they had honest answers, they would have engaged in a discussion yesterday. Instead, the MPs were arbitrarily detained. Women MPs were harassed and dragged to the PS. Our MP Mitali Bag fell unconscious.'

How appropriate to celebrate freedom by imposing bans?: MPs question meat shop closures on I-Day
The decision by several municipal bodies across the country to shut down meat shops and slaughterhouses on Independence Day has sparked sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who say such restrictions contradict the very idea of freedom being celebrated. Samajwadi Party MP Virendra Singh questioned the logic behind marking August 15 with bans. 'On Independence Day, every citizen should feel a sense of pride and joy about the country's freedom. But if we celebrate that freedom by placing bans, how appropriate is that?' he said. Targeting the BJP, he added, 'First, they should seek the opinion of Kiren Rijiju, their own Cabinet Minister, who says he eats beef. It would be more appropriate to ask him this question first.' Backing the sentiment, Congress MP Imran Masood took aim at the government's policies. 'You (the government) will become number one in beef export but won't let people eat,' Masood said, calling the move hypocritical and a violation of personal choice. The strongest criticism came from Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who condemned the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) for its order to shut down slaughterhouses and meat shops on August 15 and 16 (the latter being Janmashtami). 'What's the connection between eating meat and celebrating Independence Day?' Owaisi asked. In a post on X, he wrote, 'Many municipal corporations across India seemed to have ordered that slaughterhouses and meat shops should be closed on 15th August. Unfortunately, @GHMCOnline has also made a similar order. This is callous and unconstitutional." He further said, '99 per cent of Telangana's people eat meat. These bans violate people's right to liberty, privacy, livelihood, culture, nutrition, and religion.' As August 15 nears, opposition parties express concerns about perceived state interference in personal choices.
