Six rescued as boat leaks in Lahad Datu waters

LAHAD DATU: Six individuals including two boys were rescued after the fibre boat they were travelling in leaked off Pulau Timbun Mata, Kunak, here, on Sunday. The victims were rescued by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali said the Lahad Datu Maritime Zone Operation Centre received a call from the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) Kota Kinabalu at 1.45pm. They were informed that a boat that was scheduled to send the reverse osmosis (RO) water supply to the General Operation Force (GOF) post had leaked after hitting a floating log. 'Upon receiving information, the Banggi 45 boat which was patrolling in the nearby area rushed to the scene and discovered the victims off Pulau Batik waters with the help from a pump boat due to shallow water. 'All the victims were found safe and no injury was reported,' he said, in a statement on Monday. According to Dzulfikhar, three victims, a 37-year-old man, Lajim Paisal and his two sons aged 10 and six were taken to Lahad Datu Fishery jetty. Three other victims were waiting for the company's boat to arrive on the island to repair the fibre boat. All three of them arrived safely on land at 2am on Monday. In the meantime, the MMEA reminds all boat operators to ensure that all crew and passengers wear life jackets while operating a boat. This is not only a standard operating procedure, but also an important step to prevent loss of life in the event of an incident. Bangkok shooting claims six lives near Chatuchak Market

The attack occurred around 12.30 pm local time at the popular Or Tor Kor fresh food market. The assailant, wearing a black T-shirt and military-style shorts and carrying a backpack, was believed to have used a handgun to open fire on others. Commissioner-General of the Royal Thai Police, Pol Gen Kitrat Phanphet, confirmed the case and said the assailant was male and had used the handgun to take his own life at the scene. "Police officers are currently working to identify the individual and determine the motive behind the attack," he said in a brief statement on Monday. Kitrat also instructed the Metropolitan Police Bureau to urgently carry out a comprehensive investigation, gather as much evidence as possible, and examine CCTV footage to uncover the facts and swiftly solve the case. The Bangkok Emergency Medical Centre, commonly known as the Erawan Centre, confirmed that the casualties comprised four security personnel, one woman, and the assailant himself. Public urged to remain calm as police probe teen student's death in Papar

The student, Zara Qairina from SMS Tun Datu Mustafa Limauan, was found unconscious in a drain near her hostel in Papar around 4am on July 16. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu and was later pronounced dead on July 17 at about 1pm. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun, on Monday, said that the police is conducting a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident. Police are working to determine the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Members of the public are advised not to spread unverified information out of respect for the grieving family.
