Visakhapatnam
: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has established a single window clearance cell to manage Vinayaka Chavithi celebrations. A special cell has been set up at both the GVMC head office and the zonal offices to grant permission to the public, resident welfare associations, NGOs, voluntary organizations, and festival organizing committees for conducting the festivities.
The GVMC commissioner, Ketan Garg, has advised city residents, RWAs, NGOs, and festival committees to use environmentally friendly clay Ganesh idols and strictly avoid idols made from chemical-based colors, plaster of Paris, or thermocol materials. He urged people to immerse the clay Ganesh idols in a bucket of water at home and for colony residents to utilize water tanks arranged near parks in their localities for idol immersion.
The commissioner also instructed that permission must be obtained from the nodal officers with due compliance to regulations before setting up entertainment stages in public places. He emphasized that cleanliness and hygiene must be strictly maintained during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival celebrations.
The GVMC has designated nodal officers at the head office and zonal offices to assist with the celebrations. Zonal commissioners, assistant medical officers, assistant city planners, and executive engineers at respective zonal offices can be contacted at the zonal level for any assistance or permissions.

Neendakara harbour wins agriculture award

Thiruvananthapuram: Neendakara fishing harbour in Kollam won second prize in the agriculture department's awards for best farming practices among public sector institutions. It won for the project Haritha Sagaram. The initiative aims to promote agricultural awareness among fishing communities and ensure safe vegetable cultivation. Spread across five acres, the project involved six model farms where crops such as bananas, beans, ginger, turmeric, leafy vegetables and spinach were cultivated using scientific methods. A unique aspect of the project is the integration of vegetable marketing with fish sales, providing consumers with fresh produce alongside seafood. Villages near VTR left in darkness for years

1 2 3 4 5 6 Bettiah: A large number of villagers in three settlements near the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) have been living without electricity for years in Bagaha. The affected families belong to Luxmipur Rampurwa panchayat under Bagaha-2 block. According to officials, they were deprived of power supply due to environmental restrictions. Executive officer of the electricity department, Alok Amritanshu, said, "We have provided off-grid electricity to those areas where on-grid electricity has not been provided." A microgrid power plant was set up in the border areas of Jhandu Tola, Chakdahwa and Bin Toli. However, with the batteries of the solar panels now damaged, the villages remain without electricity. Amritanshu said a new on-grid-off-grid power station costing Rs 139 crore would soon be built, which would ensure 24-hour electricity supply to the area, including Jhandu Tola, Chakdahwa and Bin Toli. Residents expressed their frustration over years of neglect. Basant Kumar, a villager from Jhandu Tola, said, "We never saw electricity after independence. But in 2018, the government established solar panels in these villages. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Last Chance: 80% Off This Artisan's Retirement Jewelry Sale The Heritage Journal Read More Undo When the solar panels came into existence, they offered us a sense of comfort and security. This alternative was very useful for us to recharge our mobiles and help with other daily needs. But after two years, the battery failed, and again we are facing darkness in the village. Now we go to Susta village in Nepal, 1km away from our residence, to charge our mobiles." He added that when solar panels were first introduced, they became the lifeline of the region, but the lack of maintenance meant they soon failed, pushing villagers back into darkness. Some residents now use small personal solar panels to light their homes at night. In Chakdahwa, another villager, Gulab Ansari, said, "We have complained several times to the local MLA and other administrative officers to restart the solar panels, but we only received assurances from them. More than 2,000 people live their lives in shadow due to the absence of electricity in our region, which is surrounded by VTR, the Gandak river, and Nepal on one side. We face many problems due to darkness. People in our village have been cooking food in the dark for years. Those who do not have lighting arrangements cook their food before it gets dark. Not only this, but the problem increases when dangerous wild animals come to our village from the dense forest of Valmiki Tiger Reserve. That time proves to be very dangerous and scary for us." Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: Here's why you shouldn't sight the moon on Vinayaka Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most important Hindu festivals in India, observed with devotion, joy and discipline. The day marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and bringer of wisdom and prosperity. On this occasion, devotees welcome Lord Ganesha into their homes in the form of clay idols, offering prayers, sweets, and songs of devotion. The 10-day Ganesh Utsav in 2025 will begin on Tuesday, 26th August and will conclude with Ganesh Visarjan (idol immersion) on Saturday, 6th September. In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is honoured as a symbol of knowledge, good fortune, wisdom and prosperity. It is a common practice to worship him before starting any new journey, business, or important work to seek blessings for success. Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 Start And End Date Moon Sighting on Ganesh Chaturthi 2025 Traditionally, devotees are advised to avoid moon sighting on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. In 2025, the moon should not be seen on 26th August from 1:54 PM to 8:29 PM and 9:28 a.m. to 8:57 p.m on August 27. This belief is rooted in an ancient Hindu legend. The Story Behind Avoiding the Moon Sighting on Ganesh Chaturthi The story goes that Lord Kubera, the god of wealth, once invited Lord Shiva to a grand feast. Lord Shiva did not attend but sent young Ganesha in his place. Ganesha, known for his large appetite, ate all the food prepared and even consumed everything available in Kubera's city. Later that night, while travelling on his mouse, Ganesha was mocked by Chandra (the moon) for his unusual appearance and round belly tied with a serpent. Hurt and angered, Ganesha cursed the moon, saying that anyone who looked at it on Ganesh Chaturthi would face false accusations and humiliation for a year. When the moon apologised, Ganesha reduced the curse to one day only – Ganesh Chaturthi. Since then, devotees avoid looking at the moon during the festival to escape bad luck. This story also teaches the values of humility and respect.
