Houthis strike Israeli cities, threaten ships at Israeli ports

Shafaq News – Sanaa
Yemen's Houthis (Ansarallah) announced Tuesday carrying out four drone attacks targeting Israeli cities, including Haifa, Umm al-Rashrash (Eilat), the Negev, and Beersheba, using six unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Houthi military spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree said that the operations "successfully achieved their objectives." He renewed warnings to all companies operating in Israeli ports, stating that any vessel dealing with Israel—regardless of its destination—"will be targeted." He urged those firms to halt all commercial activity with Israeli ports to ensure the safety of their ships and crews.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli Air Force said it had intercepted a drone launched from Yemen. An Israeli military spokesperson confirmed the incident occurred over the Gulf of Eilat, noting that no sirens were activated in line with standard security procedures.

Since October 2023, the Houthis have repeatedly launched missiles and drones toward Israel, claiming the attacks are part of their broader campaign to support Palestinians amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
Israel has responded with airstrikes on Houthi-held areas in Yemen, targeting infrastructure, ports, and energy facilities in al-Hudaydah and other locations, causing both material damage and casualties.

Putin–Trump Summit in Alaska: Preparations finalized

Shafaq News – Moscow Preparations for a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump have entered their final stage, Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov announced on Thursday. The meeting is set for tomorrow, August 15, at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. Ushakov said the agenda and logistics were completed after an intensive five-day preparation period following the announcement late last week. He described the process as urgent and complex, involving the resolution of technical matters such as visa processing. 'Everything is being done in an intensive mode… active work is being done on the political component of the summit,' Ushakov told reporters. The summit will begin around 11:30 a.m. local time with a private tête-à-tête between Putin and Trump, joined only by interpreters. Expanded negotiations with both countries' delegations will follow, continuing over a working lunch. The Russian delegation will include Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Presidential Aide for Foreign Policy Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Special Presidential Representative for Investment and Economic Cooperation Kirill Dmitriev. Ushakov said the US team will also consist of five senior officials, whose names will be announced by Washington. Although no formal agenda has been released, Ushakov confirmed the 'central topic' will be the war in Ukraine. He referred to an earlier meeting on August 6 at the Kremlin with US Special Envoy Steven Witkoff, saying the summit builds on those discussions. Other issues include 'broader tasks of ensuring peace and security,' regional and international crises, and economic cooperation. Ushakov noted that trade and investment remain underdeveloped despite 'enormous potential' in bilateral relations. After talks, Putin and Trump will hold a joint press conference to present the results. Ushakov pointed to the symbolism of the venue, near a memorial cemetery where Soviet and American personnel who died in World War II are buried. The site commemorates those who took part in the Lend-Lease aircraft delivery program between 1942 and 1945. 'This is especially symbolic in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over Nazi Germany and militarist Japan,' he said.

Hamas condemns Smotrich's settlement plan

Shafaq News – West Bank On Thursday, Hamas denounced Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's plan to advance the E1 settlement project, which would add more than 3,400 housing units in Ma'ale Adumim, east of Jerusalem. The E1 zone remains one of the most contentious settlement initiatives, repeatedly halted under US and EU pressure. Critics warn that its construction would split the West Bank into northern and southern enclaves and destroy the prospect of a contiguous Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. In a statement, Hamas labeled the plan a 'dangerous step' in Israel's strategy of annexation and forced displacement, accusing it of operating as a 'colonial regime' in defiance of international law and UN resolutions that deem settlements illegal. The group vowed the project would 'fail against Palestinian steadfastness,' arguing that imposing new facts on the ground 'will not confer legitimacy on the occupation.' Smotrich, a far-right member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet and the minister overseeing West Bank civilian affairs in the Defense Ministry, announced on Wednesday that he would approve the tenders, portraying the plan as 'Zionism at its best.' He declared that the E1 development would 'bury the idea of a Palestinian state' by linking Ma'ale Adumim directly to Jerusalem under a 'de facto sovereignty strategy.'

UN warns RSF's rival government bid endangers Sudan's unity

Shafaq News – New York The United Nations Security Council on Wednesday rejected the Rapid Support Forces' (RSF) declaration last month of a rival administration in areas of Sudan under its control, warning that the move threatens the country's unity. In a statement, Council members said the RSF's step posed 'a direct threat to Sudan's territorial integrity' and could further fragment the country, escalate the fighting, and deepen an already severe humanitarian crisis. The Security Council urged both the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces to return to negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire and creating conditions for a political settlement that includes all political and social groups. The statement said the goal should be a credible, inclusive transition to a civilian-led government capable of guiding Sudan towards democratic elections and delivering 'a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future' in line with the aspirations of its people. It also recalled Resolution 2736 (2024), which demands that the RSF lift its siege of El Fasher in North Darfur, halt hostilities, and de-escalate tensions in and around the city.
