Digha Rath Yatra kicks off with political war over chariots between TMC and BJP

The Hindu6 hours ago

The Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday organised separate Rath Yatra celebrations in West Bengal, engaging in a competition of sorts.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the first 'Rath Yatra' from the newly constructed ₹250-crore Jagannath Temple in the coastal town of Digha. Thousands of devotees participated in the event.
'It was a profoundly emotional, soul-stirring, and awe-inspiring experience to be part of the Rath Yatra celebrations at the newly consecrated Jagannath Dham in Digha. The sound of conch shells, the fragrance of incense wafting through the air, and the chants of 'Joy Jagannath' created an atmosphere of divine grace and spiritual unity,' Ms. Banerjee posted on social media.
The Chief Minister, during the Rath Yatra, appealed through a public address system to allow devotees touch the ropes of all three chariots from inside the barricades along the 750-metre procession route from the main temple.
Not only devotees from the State, but those from different countries staying at 40-odd ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness) centres participated and danced for hours in front of the chariots to the devotional chants of 'Hare Ram, Hare Krishna.
Controversy
In the prelude to the festival, the West Bengal government distributed prasad (offering) across the State, allegedly spending ₹42 crore. The construction of Jagannath Temple in Digha, which mirrors the 12th century Puri's Jagannath temple, has triggered controversy with the BJP government in Odisha urging West Bengal government not to use 'Jagannath Dham' while referring to the Digha temple.
The BJP leadership in West Bengal, which opposed the construction of the temple, also participated in the Rath Yatra. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari participated in the Rath Yatra at three places.
'I feel fortunate to have participated in the Rath Yatra festivities of Mahaprabhu Jagannath Dev across three sacred venues today. Joined the All India Kirtan Baul and Devotional Songs Welfare Trust's grand event at Central Avenue, Kolkata, thereafter offered prayers at Sri Sri Gauranga Mahaprabhu Mandir in Tamluk, Purba Medinipur, and sought blessings at Sri Sri Shankhananda Jagannath Mandir, ISKCON Mecheda in Purba Medinipur,' Mr. Adhikari said.
The BJP leader also said that he distributed 'maha prasad' from the sacred pilgrimage of Puri Jagannath Dham to the devotees.

100 Devi Buses Flagged Off From Narela

New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 100 Devi electric buses from the newly built Narela bus depot, with a striking change—the colour has been changed from green to saffron. Traditionally, green signifies eco-friendly practices, and the colour switch has stirred up a debate. AAP Delhi convener Saurabh Bharadwaj said, "BJP wants to hurt Hindu sentiments by painting Devi buses saffron. Stains of vomit, paan, spit and mucus on buses will offend Hindu faith." Defending the move, Gupta said, "Delhi is vibrant and colourful…so, as an experiment, green and orange buses have been introduced." She added that the launch coincided with Rath Yatra and was dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Gupta emphasised govt's commitment to strengthening public transport and building a cleaner, greener and more connected capital. "We promised to modernise every bus depot and terminus in Delhi, and construct new ones to ensure seamless, safe and widespread transport access. Today's terminus and Devi buses stand testimony to that commitment." She added that the Rs 2.63-crore depot was completed in just 90 days, reflecting govt's efficiency and dedication. Sharing key features of the Sector A-9 facility, CM said that developed on approximately 4,000 square metre, the terminus included modern facilities for both passengers and buses. With three dedicated bus bays and two high-tech sheds, the depot is designed as a modern public transport hub. It includes parking for buses, a new pass section, staff and passenger canteens, medical facilities, clean toilets, RO water plant, pantry and EV charging stations. Gupta said the depot would operate 75 buses on nine major routes, most of which would be electric. The routes will connect with areas like Old Delhi Railway Station, Mori Gate, Delhi Secretariat, Uttam Nagar and border regions, improving transit in northwest Delhi and promoting the vision of green, clean public transport throughout the city. Highlighting how routes were reduced, per-kilometre costs inflated and thousands of DTC employees were rendered jobless earlier, Gupta claimed, "The previous govts were more focused on profit than performance. For the first time, Delhi has a govt that values work over money." She said the goal was to convert 100% of Delhi's public transport fleet to electric, reducing pollution and providing safe, comfortable and eco-friendly travel options. "This is not just a bus launch, it is a firm step towards transforming Delhi's transport future." Calling the launch a historic milestone for the city, transport minister Pankaj Singh said the depot would ensure safer and more accessible transport for every citizen.

Convicted former BJP MLA seeks pardon from Governor, Congress questions ‘political duplicity'

Former Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kanwar Lal Meena, convicted and sentenced to three years' imprisonment in a 20-year-old criminal case, has moved a mercy petition before Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagade seeking pardon. As part of the process, the opinion of police officials in Jhalawar, where the case was registered in 2005, has been sought. The former Anta MLA's Assembly membership was terminated last month after the Rajasthan High Court upheld his conviction and sentence and he surrendered in the trial court following the Supreme Court's refusal to give any relief. The delay in the decision on Meena's disqualification had led to a political slugfest between the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress. The Congress and civil rights groups in Jaipur on Friday (June 27, 2025) questioned 'political duplicity' in the matter while affirming that initiating the process for remission of Meena's sentence amounted to adopting double standards. Congress MLA and Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully said there seemed to be one law for BJP members and another for common people. The case against Meena pertained to an incident in February 2005, when he arrived with seven associates at the venue of a protest by the villagers in Jhalawar district demanding a Deputy Sarpanch repoll and brandished a revolver at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. He threatened the SDM and asked him to either announce a repoll within two minutes or get killed. This was a rare instance for a sitting MLA being disqualified in Rajasthan, though it is not the first case. The Anta seat in Baran district became vacant after Meena's disqualification, about which the Election Commission has been informed. By-election for the constituency, to be held within six months, is yet to be announced. Some BJP leaders had favoured seeking pardon or commutation of Meena's sentence to less than two years by the Governor before his disqualification. After the termination of his membership, the mercy petition has been filed under Article 161 of the Constitution, which empowers the Governor to 'grant pardons, etc., and to suspend, remit or commute sentences in certain cases'. The Governor's office has sought a report from the State government on Meena's petition. Following this, Jhalawar Superintendent of Police Richa Tomar has sent letters to Station House Officers of Manohar Thana and Aklera police stations, asking them for their opinion, along with the comments of the Circle Officer. Mr. Jully said the true face of the BJP, which was pretending to be the protector of democracy, had been exposed in Meena's case. 'Is this privilege reserved only for the BJP members? Initiating such a process for a sacked MLA convicted by the court is tantamount to the murder of democracy,' he said, adding that the BJP wanted to run two laws in the country. The Soochna Evum Rozgar Adhikar Abhiyan demanded that any process to pardon Meena be stopped with immediate effect, and 'strict ethical standards and accountability system' be ensured for MLAs and public representatives. 'The attempt to save Meena is a clear instance of misuse of power, which not only insults the basic spirit of the Constitution and the justice system, but also sets double standards for those in power and the people,' Adhikar's member Nikhil Dey said. However, Law Minister Jogaram Patel told journalists during his visit to Jodhpur that the filing of a mercy petition before the Governor was a constitutional process to which every convicted person had a right. 'The Governor reviews the petition as per the legal provisions and takes a decision. If the sentence is pardoned, Meena's Assembly seat will be restored… If the Governor takes another decision, the situation as it is today will remain the same,' Mr. Patel said.
