JNUSU contestants invoke ‘Pahalgam', ‘religion' and ‘Palestine' in intense debate
The presidential debate has been a longstanding tradition of the JNUSU polls and was attended by various student organisations. The event started at 11.30pmwith the sound of drumbeats, which were soon replaced by slogans of 'Azadi' and 'Lal Salaam'. Posters of 'Hindu Lives Matter' were also a common sight.
With multiple student organisations present at the spot, the event got off to a rough start due to continuous disruptions. The student election committee brought in order by threatening to pause the debate if the crowd did not follow social decorum.
The election process, after minor bumps, is back on track, with the polling process set for Friday. The polling will take place in two sessions, from 9am to 1pm and 2.30pm to 5.30pm. The counting of votes is expected to take place on the same day and the announcement of results on Monday. A total of 7,906 students are set to vote this year, 57% male and 43% female voters.
Each of the 13 candidates was allotted 12 minutes to present their political ideologies. A two-minute silence was observed before the speeches in memory of the Pahalgam attack victims.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad's (ABVP) presidential candidate Shikha Swaraj said in her speech, asked, 'To those who say terrorism has no religion, were the victims not asked their faith before being killed?'
All India Students Association (AISA) candidate Nitish Kumar retaliated with equal fervour, saying: '...CAA-NRC has been implemented, and inside the Parliament, Opposition is asked to lower their gaze while talking; but on the other hand, there is no action when they insult Ambedkar.'
Students' Federation of India candidate Choudhury Tayyaba Ahmed's speech, meanwhile, was disrupted multiple times by ABVP, as she got on the stage to point out the 'flaws of the right'. 'Today, the biggest danger to the liberalisation of people is the corporate Hindutva... They are doing politics out of violence,' she said.
National Students' Union of India (NSUI) candidate Pradeep Dhaka thundered on the stage with references to several international and national political issues, weaving in hot-button issues of Palestine, Manipur and Bilkis Bano.
A common part of most speeches were flaws of the administration, lack of proper academic resources and students' needs taking a back seat in the power struggle between the Left and Right bodies.
This year, the JNU student elections have been marked by several changes in contestant dynamics. The long-standing unity of the Left was broken, with the AISA allying with the Democratic Students Federation (DSF), while the Students' Federation of India (SFI), Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA), AISF, and PSA have each nominated their own candidates.

Delhi: JNUSU protests against SIR, claims several students detained
New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) on Wednesday claimed that several student leaders were detained by police during a protest against the revision of Bihar's electoral rolls. The protest was held outside the university gate. The Election Commission (EC) is conducting a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar, ahead of the assembly polls due later this year. The draft roll was published on August 1, amid opposition claims that the ongoing exercise will deprive crores of eligible citizens of their right to vote. The final roll is scheduled to be published on September 30. In a statement, the JNUSU alleged that Delhi Police detained its office bearers and All India Students' Association (AISA) members during the protest. It said the police action is 'a chilling echo of a broader pattern of stifling dissent under the current regime". The union said the students were peacefully mobilising to oppose the EC's 'exclusionary" SIR policies, which it claimed would lead to voter disenfranchisement. One of the posters at the protest read, 'ECI must answer the concerns of opposition." The opposition has been protesting against the SIR exercise in Parliament and has been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses. On Monday, INDIA bloc MPs, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sharad Pawar, marched from Parliament to the EC headquarters, accusing the poll body of 'vote fraud" during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and against the SIR exercise. Protests erupt in Karnataka as devotees demand action over Dharmasthala defamation
Karnataka witnessed massive protests across multiple districts as pro-Hindu activists, BJP supporters, and devotees of Dharmasthala condemned alleged derogatory remarks and misinformation targeting the sacred temple town, referring to the ongoing probe in mass burial Chikkamagaluru, over 2,000 devotees participated in a 2 km protest march from the Taluk Office to Azad Park, singing devotional hymns and beating drums. Hundreds of women joined the rally, condemning what they described as a conspiracy to malign Koppal, thousands of women, along with a differently-abled Muslim man in a wheelchair, took part in a rally from Ishwar Park to the DC's office. BJP seeks NIA probe into Hindu activist's murder in front of a mosque, writes to Karnataka Governor
The BJP on Wednesday urged Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to prevail upon the state government to hand over the probe into the murder of a Hindu activist in Koppal to the NIA, alleging a "deep-rooted conspiracy" by Jehadi extremist groups. The BJP has requested Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to intervene in a Hindu activist's murder.(PTI) In a detailed memorandum submitted to the Governor at Raj Bhavan, the BJP legislators said Gavisiddappa Nayak, a Scheduled Tribe Valmiki community leader, was brutally murdered on August 3 in front of the Syed Nadeemullah Qadri Mosque at Koppal town. The party alleged that the murder bore the "stamp of the PFI and SDPI" and accused the Congress government of showing a "soft corner" to "dangerous elements." "The peace and tranquility of Koppal were shattered due to the brutal, cold-blooded murder of one Gavisiddappa Nayak on 3rd August 2025. The murder took place between 7.30 pm and 8 pm right in front of the Mosque in the heart of Koppal town," the memorandum said. The BJP legislators alleged that the prime accused, Sadiq Kolkar, had openly paraded with swords and machetes in Koppal a day before the murder and posted videos on social media. "Had the police made preventive arrests on the same day, the murder, perhaps, could have been prevented. We charge the police of dereliction of duty, negligence and irresponsibility," they said. According to the memorandum, Nayak was first called to a highway for talks but was later killed inside Koppal town. "The intention and motive are very clear -- to create terror among the Hindus and prove to the society that they can kill anybody with impunity and escape with felicity," it said. The BJP further alleged that the nature of the attack--beheading and throat-slitting--resembled earlier killings of Hindu activists in coastal Karnataka. "Going through the intention, the pattern and the motive behind the killing, it can be safely concluded that this Koppal murder has all the stamp of the SDPI and PFI," the party said, adding that "Jehadi forces operating in coastal districts have entered Koppal in Kalyana Karnataka region. This needs to be nipped in the bud, lest it spreads to entire North Karnataka region." The memorandum also accused Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister G Parameshwara of adopting a "kid-gloves method" in dealing with such elements. "The pusillanimous attitude of the state government headed by Chief Minister Sri Siddaramaiah and the flip-flop approach of the Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara have been the main contribution for this bloody chapter. Koppal is the latest addition," it stated. The BJP legislators argued that the NIA probe was necessary to uncover "the nefarious designs of the jehadi forces operating elsewhere in Karnataka." They claimed that the killers were "trained and abetted by sleeper cells with foreign funding" and said only a central investigation could ensure a "fair, transparent and thorough probe." Expressing optimism that the Governor would intervene, the BJP said, "We are optimistic that Your Excellency will give a positive look to our request and prevail upon the state government to hand over the Gavisiddappa Nayak murder case to the National Investigating Agency (NIA) immediately." The murder of Nayak triggered widespread outrage in Koppal and other parts of north Karnataka, with opposition leaders accusing the Congress government of failing to curb extremist violence. Police have arrested a few suspects and intensified their search for Kolkar, the prime accused, even as pressure mounts for a central investigation.
