Admissions to begin in Delhi's flagship CM SHRI Schools for Classes 6 to 8 on Wednesday

Indian Express7 days ago
Starting Wednesday, students in Delhi will be able to apply for admission to the new CM SHRI Schools. These schools are part of a plan announced by the BJP-led Delhi Government this year to 'create model educational institutions with modern infrastructure and advanced teaching methodologies'. The shortlisted CM SHRI Schools are expected to open around September, as per officials.
While the Aam Aadmi Party Government in Delhi had unveiled the schools of specialised excellence (SOSEs) to admit students from Class 9 onwards, the new model begins earlier, from Class 6. This would mark a shift in the Delhi Government's school reform strategy with modern tools such as AI-enabled libraries, robotic lab infrastructure available for an early-stage academic development.
A circular issued by the Directorate of Education on July 23 described the CM SHRI Schools as institutions that 'aim at ensuring greater autonomy and flexibility with a focus on promoting excellence and equity in public schooling'. It added that the schools are 'designed to serve as model educational institutions, equipped with modern infrastructure and advanced teaching methodologies aligned' with the National Education Policy 2020, the National Curriculum Framework for School Education and the National Curriculum Framework.
Out of the 75 CM SHRI Schools identified this year, 33 have seats vacant in Classes 6, 7, and 8. These include schools in areas such as Surajmal Vihar, Khichripur, Civil Lines, Shalimar Bagh, Dwarka, Kalkaji, and Madanpur Khadar, among others.
The CM SHRI Schools are being developed as fully digital campuses with smart classrooms, AI-powered libraries, robotics labs, solar power systems, and zero-waste facilities. Some are being rebuilt from the ground up, while others are undergoing major upgrades. The Delhi Government has also rolled out a recruitment drive for teachers and sanctioned funds to expand smart classrooms across the system, as per officials.
The admission process, the circular said, will prioritise 'talented and deserving meritorious students with high potential, thereby enabling them to access high-quality education and fulfill their academic and career aspirations'.
According to the circular, an admission test will be held on August 30 for entry into Classes 6, 7, and 8. Applications will be accepted online from July 30 to August 15, admit cards will be issued from August 23, and results will be announced on September 10.
The circular stated that students who live in Delhi and are currently enrolled in a recognised school in the same class they are seeking admission to will be eligible to apply.
At least 50 per cent of the seats are reserved for children studying in government and government-aided schools, including those run by the Directorate of Education, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and the New Delhi Municipal Council, as well as Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas. Students from Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Classes (non-creamy layer) backgrounds and children with special needs will receive a 5 per cent relaxation in eligibility marks.
The admission test will be an OMR-based multiple-choice paper with 100 questions, covering Hindi, English, general knowledge, mental ability, and maths. There will be no negative marking. The paper will be bilingual, and children with special needs will receive extra time.

2025 local body polls: State Election Commission receives over 12 lakh applications in 12 days for including names on voters' list

With just three days to go before the deadline ends, the State Election Commission has received more than 12 lakh applications for inclusion of names in the voters' list for the 2025 local body elections in Kerala. Till 3 p.m. Monday, the commission has received 12,41,134 applications in Form 4, the form for including names on the list. The highest number of applications has been filed in Malappuram and Thrissur. The commission has also received 6,196 Form 6 applications for making corrections, 61,390 Form 7 applications for transposition - moving a voter to another ward. As per the latest updates, 77,700 applications have been filed raising objections to inclusion of names. The hearings on the applications, a mammoth task given the large number, are also progressing at the ward level. When publishing the draft electoral rolls on July 23, the commission had set August 7 as the deadline for enrolment applications and filing complaints. However, political parties including the Congress-led United Democratic Front, had demanded an extension of the deadline, citing numerous flaws in the draft. The commission is yet to decide whether to extend the deadline or not. State Election commission A. Shajahan Mr. Shajahan said it will look into the demand on August 6, when a review is planned on the ongoing electoral roll revision. According to him, the huge inflow of enrolment applications was quite normal for pre-election summary revisions, compared to revisions held between two elections. The draft electoral roll published by the commission on July 23 ahead of its revision for the local body elections had 2,66,78,256 voters including 1,40,45,837 women, 1,26,32,186 men, and 233 transgender voters. The commission had announced plans to publish the final list on August 30.

UK injects 100 million pounds to boost border security

Agency: PTI London, Aug 4 (PTI) The UK on Monday announced that it will invest 100 million pounds as part of its efforts to control soaring illegal migration. The new funding is earmarked for up to 300 extra National Crime Agency (NCA) officers, state-of-the-art detection technology and new equipment targeting criminal networks behind people smuggling, the Home Office said. The NCA's Border Security Command and other law enforcement agencies will benefit from a cash injection to strengthen investigations targeting smuggling kingpins and disrupt their operations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and beyond, it added. The funding package will go towards supporting a new pilot of the 'one-in, one-out" UK returns agreement, which will see migrants who arrive illegally on small boats returned to France. It will also support the new powers to be introduced when the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill becomes law, criminalising the creation and publication of online material that promotes a breach of immigration law. 'This additional funding will strengthen every aspect of our plan, and will turbo-charge the ability of our law enforcement agencies to track the gangs and bring them down, working with our partners overseas, and using state-of-the-art technology and equipment," said UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. The Labour Party minister accused the previous Conservative Party government of allowing small boat smuggling gangs to embed their criminal trade across the English Channel, putting lives at risk with dangerous migrant crossings. 'They must not be allowed to get away with this vile crime. That is why this government has developed a serious and comprehensive plan to dismantle their business model, from disrupting their supply chains across the European continent to clamping down on their illegal working operations here in the UK," said Cooper. The new investment package unveiled this week is aimed at enabling more intelligence to be gathered on organised immigration crime gang members and support 'upstream capacity building" by intensifying efforts in transit countries across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia to target organised immigration crime. New hi-tech surveillance capabilities and AI-assisted intelligence and data analysis tools as well as the implementation of extended police powers to seize and download digital devices to gather evidence and intelligence, are among the government's priorities. 'We currently have 91 investigations ongoing into the most dangerous people smuggling networks impacting the UK, and are working with partners at home and abroad to target, disrupt and dismantle them. This additional funding will help boost our capacity and capability, enabling us to target more offenders," said Rob Jones, NCA Director General. The agency reported that in 2024-25, it achieved 351 NCA-led disruptions of organised immigration crime networks and activity – its highest level on record – and a 40 per cent increase on the previous financial year. Last week, it announced the agency's biggest people-smuggling raid and seizure of boat engines in Bulgaria. The added investment is expected to build on this to arrest and prosecute major smuggling gang leaders and the seizure of more small boats and engines. The investment comes as the latest statistics revealed more than 25,000 migrants made dangerous small boat crossings to enter the UK illegally last month, marking a new record for July. The government also plans a clampdown on student visas to stop migrants using the study route as a way to enter the UK legally and later claim asylum. It will see UK universities face stricter rules around course completion rates to maintain their ability to sponsor visas for foreign students, who typically pay higher fees than domestic students. Following SC rap, BJP accuses Rahul Gandhi of undermining sovereignty

New Delhi, Aug 4 (UNI) Following the Supreme Court's rap over his remarks against the Indian Army, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi drew flak from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which accused him of demoralising the Indian armed forces. The BJP said after his "weak responses to cross-border aggression", Rahul Gandhi and his family have no right to comment on the China issue. Addressing the media here, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia referred to the ongoing legal proceedings concerning Rahul Gandhi's social media post alleging that several thousand square kilometres of Indian territory had been annexed by China. Rahul Gandhi had also claimed that Indian soldiers were being 'thrashed' by their Chinese counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh. 'Does Rahul Gandhi, who has sworn to uphold the Constitution as Leader of Opposition, not realise the gravity of his statements? The Supreme Court has made it clear — 'If you are a true Indian, you would not say this.' This raises a serious question: Does Bharat deserve a better Leader of Opposition?' Bhatia remarked. The Supreme Court had earlier in the day stayed proceedings in the criminal defamation case against Gandhi, related to his remarks on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash with China. This came while hearing his appeal against the Allahabad High Court judgment that had refused to stay the trial initiated in Lucknow. Bhatia further questioned whether Rahul Gandhi was undermining the sovereignty of the nation and aiding those inimical to India's interests. 'Is he demoralising the brave Indian armed forces? Is this conduct befitting a constitutional office bearer?' he asked. The criticism was echoed by BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh, who in his post on social media platform X accused the Gandhi family of displaying 'meek responses' to cross-border aggression. "Supreme Court has rapped Sri @RahulGandhi on the knuckles for his irresponsible statements on border issues & Galwan clash . He & his family have zero right to comment on China issue after all compromises & meek responses to cross border aggression." "Do you have any credible material ? If you were a true Indian , you would not say all this' - This rap on knuckle by Supreme Court is enough for a life time penance. But for shameless @RahulGandhi & his psychophant gang there is no bottom line ( इति ) in public life." UNI AJ RN
